Horizon Forbidden West's Free Upgrade Means You Shouldn't Buy The Standard PS5 Version

Since Sony is offering a free upgrade for PS4 owners, there's no reason to pay the extra $10 for the PS5 version.

Last week, Sony officially opened up preorders for Horizon Forbidden West ahead of the game's release on PS4 and PS5 in February next year. Curiously it was bound to be the first exclusive from Sony without a PS4-to-PS5 upgrade path, forcing you to purchase the $80 Digital Deluxe edition if you needed both. Sony has since reversed that decision, which has inadvertently made the PS5 version of the game a less sensible purchase, especially if you're buying digitally.

Right now, the PS4 version of Horizon Forbidden West retails for $60, while the PS5 version is listed for $70. This isn't too surprising--all of Sony's exclusives outside of launch titles that are also cross-gen have followed this pattern, including Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut most recently. Unlike those, however, the PS4-to-PS5 upgrade for the PS4 version is going to be free following Sony's announcement over the weekend, making the $10 premium for the base PS5 version a costly option for what it gets you.

In fact, paying $70 outright for the PS5 version might be a worse value proposition too. With the PS4 version of the game and its inherent free upgrade, you are getting Horizon Forbidden West for two consoles. The base PS5 version is only for Sony's new console, so you lose out of that additional platform while also paying $10 more, which makes little sense. If you're buying the physical version, you do get the PS5 case and disc, which might be important to you if you're proud of your physical collection.

It's clear that this is something Sony might address in the coming weeks, since it's a little confusing now to those without context as to why one version is more expensive than the other (especially since the PS4 version on PSN doesn't make the free upgrade option that clear). It could be that Sony is devising a method to compensate for preorders that occurred before its reversal before aligning the prices of both versions.

Either way, take this as a PSA to only preorder the PS4 version if you are planning to before launch, since there's no reason to pay any more than that for the standard edition. Yes you should buy PS5 version if you want the PS5 physical version or the PS4 physical version.

There's no reason to have it for PS4 if you have a PS5(I dont).

Why aren't they just giving both versions when you buy one. Like they did with Vita.. I hate stingy!

*Physical games are worth not getting digital once you get a nice stash going of 8 games, then 15 and before you know it you have a nice shelf..

Now im hundreds deep with only games i played Or plan on playing at some point.

@sippio: If you want to pay $10 more for slightly different graphics on a disc and sleeve of a game case then that is on you lol

@psychomantisiii: “on a disc and sleeve of a game case” bud. No matter which version you buy physical or digital you will get the the other for free. The PS5 version is free with the physical PS4 Version, so yes, it is just the graphics for packaging that will be different. It’s $10 more for a different case and disc with physical and with digital there is zero difference for the money. Knowing the context of the article helps before commenting, so…”Hahahahaha” 😉

@dts15: well I’ve platinum’d basically every PS5 game so far. Only Returnal I bought digital full price at launch (HM are my boys). If you have a backlog or a community (I have Destiny 2/Apex) - then you can wait after games launch.

Through the second hand online market - I’ve been able to buy games like Ratchet for $45 and then sell it for $45. Or Spider-man Miles for $50 and sell it for $45.

I’ve ended up spending a fraction to play those games. So for me, it’s savings over time that allows me to consume more content rather than a tangible benefit of a shelf showcase.

@sty1e_bender: I can understand that, you just only mentioned the shelf in the first post lol. On that front I feel ya, we have a local game shop that gives a lot better trade in values than GameStop so I still trade stuff in and out sometimes.

@sippio: Why would you pay $10 more for the exact same game?

@thecupidstunts: 60fps looks nice with these kinds of games. No way the PS4 can do that.

@Barighm: But the PS4 version is $10 cheaper, and gets the free PS5 upgrade. So buying the PS5 version specifically is paying $10 more for no reason at all.

@thecupidstunts: Ah, k, but aren't we talking about the digital edition? What if you want the physical edition?

@thecupidstunts:

What if you have a Ps5, BUT you have a slow-@$$ internet connection or data caps?

That will mean you will be stuck playing an inferior Ps4 physical version on your shiny new Ps5.

The extra $10 dollars is ok if buying physical version. Like the OP said he wants to build a collection, a shelf full of Ps5 Blu-Ray discs. Am pretty sure op would not want a ps4 disc to mess up his ps5 collection.

My Ps4 collection is physical and if I had a Ps5 I'd go physical too, and I'd shell out the extra $10 to get a superior version of the game.

@F-14-D_TOMCAT: "What if you have a Ps5, BUT you have a slow-@$$ internet connection or data caps?" - What does that matter? It's not an online game, it's a one time DL for the upgrade to PS5.

"you will be stuck playing an inferior Ps4 physical version on your shiny new Ps5". - Not if you DL the free upgrade to the PS5 version.

"Like the OP said he wants to build a collection, a shelf full of Ps5 Blu-Ray discs. Am pretty sure op would not want a ps4 disc to mess up his ps5 collection." - Can't argue with good aesthetics. 👍
