Infinity Blade III is "truly a next-gen gaming experience," says dev

Chair Entertainment creative director Donald Mustard says upcoming mobile game is a "console-quality experience"; believes all-in-one devices like iPhones may prove troublesome for traditional consoles.

Infinity Blade III may be a mobile game, but its developer, Chair Entertainment, says it is a true console-quality title. Speaking with GameSpot today, co-founder and creative director Donald Mustard said he is unfazed by the next generation of consoles because he believes mobile is the future.

No Caption Provided

"We think that Infinity Blade III is a console-quality experience," Mustard said. "And to me, it's truly a next-gen gaming experience. It's like, forget the next consoles, this is the future of gaming. This kind of combination of really, really refined deep gameplay with beautiful graphics on a device that's with me all the time."

Mustard said that after watching his own children's media consumption, he believes that the power of all-in-one devices like the iPhone may prove troublesome for traditional consoles from Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo.

"It's already this powerful console in my pocket all the time. And as I look at my own children growing up, they spend more and more of their screen time on these kinds of devices where they're looking at something on YouTube to look up some Minecraft secret, then popping right back into Minecraft on their iPod Touch," Mustard said. "And then taking a picture of it and posting it on Instagram and then all their friends are commenting about it. All on the same little device."

"And I think that is a powerful window into the future of how teenagers are starting to consume things," he added. "And it's only going to be a few years before those teenagers are in their twenties and their thirties and the idea of being limited to something I have to sit down on my couch and interact with I think is a fairly foreign concept to them."

Mustard isn't predicting the demise of the traditional console market, saying that it will be around for a long time and remain "strong" and "viable" for the foreseeable future. However, he questioned whether or not it was expanding.

Another point that makes Infinity Blade III a console-quality game in Mustard's eyes is through the graphical fidelity of its characters. He said characters in the game are "extremely detailed" and feature about four times the resolution of a console character. In addition, Infinity Blade III will feature "almost instant" load times, he said.

No Caption Provided

"I don't think I can stress how huge this is," Mustard said, pointing out that in all cases loading screens are less than one second. This is an advantage mobile has over consoles, he noted, specifically calling out the 45-second load times in Bethesda's open-world game The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Overall, Mustard said he believes Infinity Blade III represents the "ultimate Infinity Blade" experience. "This really is to us the sole expression of what we think a touch-screen experience can be," he said.

Infinity Blade III is eight times larger than the 2011 original game, and additional downloadable content is in the works, Mustard added.

The Infinity Blade trilogy comes to a close with Infinity Blade III, but that's not to say the series isn't ripe for more stories.

"We always looked at the Infinity Blade trilogy as our Hobbit to The Lord of the Rings," Mustard said. "And we see this as the setup for what we can potentially do in the future."

Infinity Blade III launches on September 18 ahead of the iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S releases on September 20.

Truth bruthas, I just stood in line waiting for GTA V and so many of my kids kept shouting out Mr. ******! I was actually pretty amped that my juniors and seniors were out and there were in groups of 5-10, at least some proof that people who love violent games aren't isolated maniacs, and there was even a dad there who spoke to me about his son's grades and whether or not I thought the game would impede midterms. I told him 1 hour a night, weekends when the homework is done, and he could keep up with grades and completed assignments on Blackboard. We all gathered up and played some cell games and the dad had all of the DLC for PvZ2 which was nice to experiment with. Kids know what is good and they're just as competitive as we are when it comes to wanting that next big experience.

Unless the mobile devices can manifest themselves into 52 inch screens in 1080p and produce a similiar quality of sound as an expensive home theater system then you Sir Mustard should have the "Mus" removed from your name

yeah, swining around in both hands with sweat dripping all around, hands sahking, accidental 700 buck shitphone drop as the result of so called "next gen" - trully "great" experience. Maybe this Mustard is caveman, renting his cave from apple for like 10000 a month without permission to turn on his own brain? Oh, I forgot - with permission it will be like 25000. And when he'll forget to pay, they'll sue him for using their, apple's , patent for brain functions and they'' feed him to sharks while masturbating on gory view. Assholes.

Next-Gen Mobile for sure....But, the Xbox-One and the PS4 will kick the shit out this. Mobile devices are just catching up....like Nintendo

I don't want to play on my 7-10" Tablet on my couch in front of my 55" TV, with shitty gameplay/graphics.

How does "truly next-gen" = swipe swipe tap with enhanced graphics on a 4.87in screen?

If it were truly next-gen, would that not require a different, never experienced play style or feature set?

Now next-gen mobile graphics? Sure. It has those in spades.

"truly a next-gen gaming experience". For the iPhone at least. You know what, considering how great the previous 2 games are, this is kind of true, but these next line here is obviously complete nonsense. "forget the next consoles, this is the future of gaming." Oh really, so games like Titanfall, Final Fantasy XV, Kingdom Hearts 3, Destiny, MGS5 and Watch Dogs are not the future of gaming? Only a fanboy can say that.

Nevertheless, this game is one of my most anticipated iPhone game ever, besides the Room 2. Can't wait to get my hands on it. Infinity Blade III is eight times larger than the 2011 original game, and with additional downloadable content later, which are free of charge and are in the form of updates, and with a main character voiced by Troy Baker who stars in every awesome games recently like Last of Us, Bioshock Infinite and Catherine, all for $7. Besides GTA5, this game will be the only thing I play this next 3 months. And then after the update is released with more new features like the vs mode, possibly, I'll play that along with my PS4 games. Great2 games coming up! Can't wait!

@Kaz32 Infinity Blade was good but it was about as deep as a Miley Cyrus song, did the second game really make a case as a real game?

Yep. My cousins and I collected all the hidden weapons in the game, fight 5 optional pain in the ass bosses that destroys us in 4 hits, level up all of our equipment, weapons and rings, craft a rainbow gem which is worth $1,000,000 in game currency, play the game 10 times before the update comes in, and then play the game 10 more times after the update and get 10 hours of extra content from collecting more loots in the game, all as a free update and not a paid dlc. Best $1 i have ever spent after the big discount come in.

You really have to understand the controls in the series to appreciate the IB games. This is not merely a blindsided swipe and attack play mechanic. Each boss and major boss fight is challenging and to beat most of the later bosses, takes patience and skill, sometimes luck. Knowing the loot and items to equip, being prepared (potions, magic, etc) for each fight.

I suppose with games like Ryse for XB1 being used for comparison, you could say ID3 is a console-like experience. Compare it to something like Dark Souls, though and you see it's gameplay has not even come close to the experiences provided by the best console games.

Nearly every positive he states regarding games on mobile could be applied to PC. PS4 & XB1 are moving in that all-in-one direction. All that's left as an advantage is the mobile aspect. Sorry, but the kids of today will still enjoy games on the big screen sitting in their comfy living room.

His story is good for marketing, but fails at considering the many different lifestyles around the globe. His kids are not the same as everyone else.

Yeah sure, casual gamers will play most games on a handheld, but many people just want fully realized graphics and a full non touch controller to play on their 80" tv with full surround sound capabilities. Until handhelds have those qualities, 'regular' consoles will continue to sell well.

@Phazevariance I await the day to be able to play great mobile games like Galaxy on Fire 2 HD, Infinity Blade 2 or 3, Real Racing 2, PunchQuest, or Zombie Gunship on my monitor, let alone my television. Something tells me that time is near, with the new series of "Smart" televisions. The whole thing is about licensing and I hope companies like LG are taking notice.

Does this guy expect us to believe this, it will be another good looking IOS game with horrible frustrating controls.

As for the graphics I think it's missing a lot in the lighting and special effects department.

The one possible way I can see this game being fun is on an Ouya with a controller, and we know how many people own an Ouya.

@Supabul Dude, I loved the trilogy, particularly the story in 2 (I like large armies and stuff like that - the Gears were awesome here). GW3 had by far the best multiplayer experience of the series. But then... that horrible thing came and I wish I had never played it... Judgement. There is hardly anything left for that game, they over used the awesome Onix guard, making them look quite incompetent rather than actually fighting overwhelming odds and dying bravely, Baird's role here doesn't fit so smoothly into the trilogy based on his attitude during the trilogy. In short, I hope the next gears is way better than GW2/GW3 - and forget, I mean don't even mention Judgement at all from here on.

@Rusmurf That's what the 40 Million people like about it.... The ILLUSION of gameplay, when in actuality it's just a long, pretty, mind-numbing "swipe-pause-swipe-swipe" fest.

Look, I'm seriously glad that these guys are bringing what LOOKS like real gaming to mobile -- I truly am -- but many indie mobile games beat the crap out of Infinity Swipe in terms of gameplay.

This is typical marketing fluff but he does have one very good point, which is loading time. Many smartphones have 1-2GB of RAM. This means you can load tons of assets in advance, compared to the current consoles that are very RAM constricted. The upcoming consoles absolutely destroy smartphones when it comes to gaming though.

@shadow580 When making mobile games you have to build for the lowest common detonator. For instance the iPhone 4S is still very common and only has 512MB of RAM so they would need to build around that.

no, no it isnt.

Clearly they've never heard of tesselation. All the textures are so so flat. Yes it looks great for a phone game. But other than that. no thanks. No matter how much the industry pushes towards mobile gaming. They'll never convince the real gaming crowd.

Unfortunately, we may be the minority. And numbers count.

Yeah, yeah, yeah... All about the graphics, same deal as usual. What these people don't seem to understand is, it doesn't matter how pretty it may look, a phone game is still a phone game. As far as actual gameplay quality goes, they still have a long road ahead of them.

@toshineon I played Carmageddon on my phone yesterday. Very dated graphics but the controls were simple and worked alright so it was a lot of fun. I've tried playing Max Payne and it was terrible. Once you get to a certain complexity, a touch screen just won't do it anymore.

I don't even know where to start. They don't have even remotely close the same graphical capabilities and more important they offer butchered gameplay due to no FREAKIN BUTTONS. There's only so much you can do with touchscreen controls.

This guy is so full of it.

"feature about four times the resolution of a console character"

What?? These characters PALE in comparison to what we're already seeing on PS4 and X1 characters.

And WTF is this?? "And it's only going to be a few years before those teenagers are in their twenties and their thirties and the idea of being limited to something I have to sit down on my couch and interact with I think is a fairly foreign concept to them."

Limited? Is this guy seriously complaining about having to sit on a fucking COUCH?? Good lord. The stupidity of this guy is mind boggling.
