Infinity Blade III is "truly a next-gen gaming experience," says dev

Chair Entertainment creative director Donald Mustard says upcoming mobile game is a "console-quality experience"; believes all-in-one devices like iPhones may prove troublesome for traditional consoles.

Infinity Blade III may be a mobile game, but its developer, Chair Entertainment, says it is a true console-quality title. Speaking with GameSpot today, co-founder and creative director Donald Mustard said he is unfazed by the next generation of consoles because he believes mobile is the future.

No Caption Provided

"We think that Infinity Blade III is a console-quality experience," Mustard said. "And to me, it's truly a next-gen gaming experience. It's like, forget the next consoles, this is the future of gaming. This kind of combination of really, really refined deep gameplay with beautiful graphics on a device that's with me all the time."

Mustard said that after watching his own children's media consumption, he believes that the power of all-in-one devices like the iPhone may prove troublesome for traditional consoles from Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo.

"It's already this powerful console in my pocket all the time. And as I look at my own children growing up, they spend more and more of their screen time on these kinds of devices where they're looking at something on YouTube to look up some Minecraft secret, then popping right back into Minecraft on their iPod Touch," Mustard said. "And then taking a picture of it and posting it on Instagram and then all their friends are commenting about it. All on the same little device."

"And I think that is a powerful window into the future of how teenagers are starting to consume things," he added. "And it's only going to be a few years before those teenagers are in their twenties and their thirties and the idea of being limited to something I have to sit down on my couch and interact with I think is a fairly foreign concept to them."

Mustard isn't predicting the demise of the traditional console market, saying that it will be around for a long time and remain "strong" and "viable" for the foreseeable future. However, he questioned whether or not it was expanding.

Another point that makes Infinity Blade III a console-quality game in Mustard's eyes is through the graphical fidelity of its characters. He said characters in the game are "extremely detailed" and feature about four times the resolution of a console character. In addition, Infinity Blade III will feature "almost instant" load times, he said.

No Caption Provided

"I don't think I can stress how huge this is," Mustard said, pointing out that in all cases loading screens are less than one second. This is an advantage mobile has over consoles, he noted, specifically calling out the 45-second load times in Bethesda's open-world game The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Overall, Mustard said he believes Infinity Blade III represents the "ultimate Infinity Blade" experience. "This really is to us the sole expression of what we think a touch-screen experience can be," he said.

Infinity Blade III is eight times larger than the 2011 original game, and additional downloadable content is in the works, Mustard added.

The Infinity Blade trilogy comes to a close with Infinity Blade III, but that's not to say the series isn't ripe for more stories.

"We always looked at the Infinity Blade trilogy as our Hobbit to The Lord of the Rings," Mustard said. "And we see this as the setup for what we can potentially do in the future."

Infinity Blade III launches on September 18 ahead of the iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S releases on September 20.

I've got High End PC that will run Battlefield 4 Maxed. I'll get Xbox One probably and Ps4 in 3-4 years. But still i wont throw away my iPad games.

Sounds like none of you played games on iPad.Not talking about iPhone or iPod here.Dont care about 4" screens.

Most of you guys probably tried android tablets or phones (i've got Motoluxe not an iphone) and you know how Android sucks as quality products. All the GOODIES are on Apple's side.

Try playing games on a iPad which is a proper mobile gaming device. Then come talk about "mobile gaming sucks". Even some of the games now looks better than x360 and ps3 already and it'll improve.

Seems like almost all of you are "Elitist" about what platform you are playing on.

@arqe Does your ipad have room for 20 games or more of 30gb each???? NO. stfu. Yes some games can be fun while waiting in line at the bank....but not on a 5-10 inch screen at home. LAME.

I have pc, macbook pro, xbox 360, PS3, Galaxy s3. I play REAL games on Ps3 and 360 and occasionally on pc. I waste time with small games on the other platforms.

@MAGIC-KINECT @arqe Nope, mine could take only two games that size. But the largest game is only around 3GB at the moment. Some games just work better on the iPad than they do on console. Of course a PC suits almost every game type (with the right controller in some cases).

The memory bank and the 5-10 inch screen he pointed out are quite solid.

Not mention the input.

Some like big screen, some like carry their game everywhere, etc.

Each for their own I suppose.

But you are playing on PC so you are talking "Elitist" about it.

You are playing Console ? You are talking "Elitist" about it.

@Lamesy @arqe I also love some of the games on the iPad. XCOM, Battle Academy, Warhammer Quest, Ace Patrol are all excellent games suited to touch controls.. no other controller are needed. Card-based games like Magic, Talisman are also excellent on touch devices, although not really my cup of tea.

Some game types suit iPad, some consoles, some PC's.. some more than one, or all, of these.

I tried XCOM on a console and I really didn't enjoy it.. played on the iPad and it's fantastic!

But if you only like playing FPS or action games, then touch controls are really not suitable.. I guess it depends on how wide a variety of games you like to play.

@arqe @Lamesy i have both iphone, ipad, ps3, psvita and decent gaming PC. And honestly you cannot compare the games on iphone/ipad to the rest of them dedicated gaming machines. To say otherwise is totaly bs. i play iphone/ipad only if i want to kill time and have no other choice of platform to play games.

@Lamesy Also what "%" of people playing games bothering with "HARDCORE" you are speaking of ?

There are at least triple people who plays games casual. So there is no Hardcore Gaming market. You are all just "overrating" yourselves. And trying to look like "BADASS" guys of the gaming. Im playing games since 1991 and never considered myself as "Hardcore" gamer even i spend most of my time with competative multiplayer or MMO.

@Lamesy There is no hardcore game yes but this means its not good for gaming ?

Then PSP / PSVita / 3DS / 2DS or any Nintendo product are not good for gaming.

No hardcore games on them too. Mobile games are entertaining as same level as these consoles / handheld consoles.

@arqe @Lamesy if we're talking quality hardcore games, on screen real estate is invaluable. Not to mention touch's finnicky nature vs. precise button presses.

while i certainly enjoyed infinity blade 1 and 2, and 3 seems great, but this director dude must be joking when he says its comparable to consoles.

in food terms, it would be like comparing a candybar(phone games) to a piece of steak(consoles). sure the candybar is good, but it will only satisfy you for a short time whereas a steak fulfil your hunger more.

Honestly, when I play games on a smartphone I NEVER take them serious. NEVER. Did I say NEVER!? No, honestly. I look at smartphone games, although some do look very nice and play pretty good, as just a passing of short time and that's it. I do NOT take games serious on smart phones. I mean why should I when I have a PC I payed a lot of money for that has 10000x more power than smartphones, lol.

@Hiliary Right, and I'm sure that's the same way that these supposed mobile-obsessed teenagers he talks about in the article look at it too. Gamers will never take a mobile device as seriously as a gaming console, PC or dedicated gaming handheld, and for good reason. Even the dumbest gamers should be able to see right through this marketing-jargon. 90% of this interview is bullshit.

I teach high school and I know that kids are messing around with cell phone games but they take them about as seriously as the rest of us. In fact, most of the time when I see a group of kids talking about games and staring at their phones, they're watching a trailer for GTA or CoD or the next big PC or console title. Colonial Mustard probably just keeps his house console-free so that his kids can only play whatever new game daddy just made.

@TheAmazingYeah True. Most kids tamper with mobile devices because that's all they have available around the house. But you know what? They start liking videogames this way,and as soon as they touch a "real "game machine (even a 3DS is sufficient, maybe from a friend) they immediately spot the immense quality difference and will finally make the jump to complex/quality games.

Humans are not that stupid as not to notice differences when they are (finally) allowed to experience different devices.

The game looks nice visually... but that's because this game (I'm assuming) repeats the same strategy as the first (and probably the second, which I didn't play because I got bored of the first after 15 minutes) where they just lazily make you repeat the same 5 minutes of "game play" over and over again.

And that's not even touching his b.s. remarks about mobile devices vs. consoles. Whatever, he's probably getting paid to try and polish this turd to anyone who isn't a moderately serious gamer, let him spin away.

Right, this game has instantaneous loads because the game assets are simpler and smaller than a contemporary console or PC title.

When this dude says '4x the resolution of a console character' I think he's just referring to the relatively pixel dense displays on handhelds, which are needed to make out any detail at all on such a tiny screen.

For a "phone" game it looks nice, but it it doesn't even look as good as a top quality LAST gen game (Gears of War, God of War, The Last of Us, you name it...) go figure next gen.

And with mobile "controls" and battery life?(...) Forget about Next Gen Consoles? (???)

This guy is delusional at best...

@shinreiningyo That's what we PC gamers said about those upstart consoles. Sure, they're more convenient, but the hardware can't power games that are nearly as good so why would anyone get one?

Wait until you start seeing the mobile ports showing up on console... Wait until 70% of your memory sits idle because the game is designed for a tiny little mobile phone. <shudder>

Nintendo might wanna watch out given Nintendo ds and Wii customers are heavily casual but Sony is hardcore Microsoft is hardcore plus they both incorporate all elements of entertainment, again with cloud tech helping boost online experiences in gaming mobile devices will be inside console titles like the division as players but with limited capabilities to assist players playing the actual game, threat to console and PC gaming no, its funny how people complain about these console prices but in actuality its about the price of my phone lol
