June 2019 PS Plus: The Free PS4 Games Available This Month

Lots of shooting and lots of running in June for PS Plus members.

Sony may be skipping E3 this year, but the company isn't ignoring the nearly 100 million PS4 owners out there. With the company officially announcing its annual Days of Play sale--starting on June 7 and ending on June 17--the only thing that could sweeten the pie is free games, and now Sony has announced June 2019's free titles for PS Plus subscribers. Here's the lineup coming on the first Tuesday of the month, just ahead of E3

As detailed on the PlayStation blog, beginning on June 4, PS Plus members can download both Borderlands: The Handsome Collection and Sonic Mania for the low price of free. Both titles will be available to claim until July 2. As always, claiming them will allow you to continue playing them for as long as your Plus subscription is active.

Now Playing: Free PS4 PlayStation Plus Games For June 2019 Revealed

The Handsome Collection packs in improved versions of both Borderlands 2 and The Pre-Sequel, which recently received enhanced texture packs for PS4 Pro owners. It's an ideal way to catch up on the series before Borderlands 3 arrives later this year. Sonic Mania, meanwhile, is a well-received 2D entry in the long-running series.

May's free PS Plus games--Overcooked and What Remains of Edith Finch--are still available to download until the new games arrive. There's still time to add them to your ever-growing backlog before they're replaced on June 4.

In our Borderlands: The Handsome Collection review, we said, "Even considering issues presented by Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, The Handsome Collection is still a great compilation, allowing you to witness not only Jack’s tale, but play a major role in shaping the history of Pandora itself, along with its lonely moon."

In our Sonic Mania review, we said that "Sonic Mania methodically uses its sentimental appeal to great effect, but in the process, it heals the wounds inflicted by its most disappointing predecessors and surpasses the series' best with its smart and interpretive design."

Sonic Mania might be cool.

But giving away Borderlands THC is meant strictly for emerging teens that were born in 2005/ virgin newcomers. Everyone on the planet has played it by now, and if you haven't yet and are older than 12, you never cared to play it in the first place.

Appearance-wise, due to the shitt offerings last month, it looks good to consumers. But I see 95% of PS Plus subscribers already owning this title, so it feels like we're just getting one game this month.

@nikolistary: Would you rather they release broken PC ports and no-name indie games nobody has ever heard of that you definitely haven't played, or excellent smash hit titles and indie darlings you most likely have played, but possibly have not, and now get a chance to do so for free?

I'll take the latter. Even just getting one of those types of games for free completely makes up for the PS+ sub.

@Barighm: There are some really good indie games out there. In fact, they released Life is Strange for PS Plus a couple years ago and in recent memory they released What Remains of Edith Finch -- both great. So it's not all the time a bad thing. In fact, it's those 'no-name' games that tend to surprise you the most.

@nikolistary: I don't own it yet because I have already spent plenty of time playing it back on PS3. But if I had the choice between more indie garbage I wouldn't touch with a pole, and a game that I might play again when I have nothing else to play, then I'd choose the latter.

@Atzenkiller: Fair point. Still sucky though. It's like if Sony made The Last of Us: Remastered a PS Plus game next month, it would look good for consumers, but who by now (except children) HASN'T played that game?

Unless of course millions of people are constantly on the fence, for a decade, on buying a video game.

@Atzenkiller: Back compatibility allows me to play all my Xbox 360 games on my Xbox One many enhanced to 4K, with higher framerates and improved Antialiasing. I never run out of anything to play with nearly 600 back compatible games in the Xbox One library, 2 of which are given away for free every month along with 2 Xbox One games.

@mindphyx77822: I have read that the new Xbox console is better than the PS5 and is fully back compatible with all 3 generations of Xbox console. Even if the PS5 is BC with the PS4, I doubt they can do it with the PS3 which has a totally different architecture from other consoles and makes emulation extremely difficult as Sony has already admitted to.

The Xbox One X is the most powerful console this generation and practically all 3rd party games(which numerically dwarf the few exclusives each console has) are better on Xbox consoles each gen(OG XBox over PS2, Xbox 360 > PS3, Xbox One X over PS4 Pro). Next gen will probably be the same if you look at that trend.

@firedrakez: What about OG PS4 > XBOX One S? Interesting that you skipped that comparison.

See? I can make silly fanboy comments too. This is fun!

@aross2004: Be that as it may, the main reason I don't like the PS4 is its lack of back compatibility, not its horsepower. You are just basically limited to using it for its exclusives. With the Xbox One X you have nearly 600 BC titles still to play along with the best versions of multi-platform games from all the generations.

However if the PS5 does have back compatibility, I will definitely consider getting it, whether or not it is better than the next gen Xbox console.

@firedrakez: Nobody ever said Xbox doesn't have good games, aside from trolls, you just don't need an Xbox to play the vast majority of them. Pretty much everything you just said can be accomplished by a low tier TC.

@Barighm: I have a mid to high end PC with a gtx 1080 gpu. I consider my Xbox One X a mid range PC considering it can actually play some of the newer games at native 4K 60 fps just below what my PC can manage. Low end PCs can't manage 4K resolution at even lower frame rates. The PS4 Pro can only simulate 4K unfortunately.

Actually there are a lot of console exclusives from the Xbox 360 gen(and some from the current gen like RDR2) that you can't access on PC right now including Red Dead Redemption 1, Fable 2, many of the Gears of Wars, Too Human, Lost Odyssey, etc.

However once Project XCloud is up and running I think those games will eventually be available on PC via live streaming just like Sony's exclusives will be available on the expanded live streaming service that they plan to have that is now being hosted by Microsoft's excellent Azure cloud network service.
