Killzone 2's rate of fire slows in April

NPD reports Sony's long-awaited FPS sells only 58,000 in its third month on the US market--roughly 9,000 units less than Halo 3; US total now 677,000.

Last week's release of the April NPD numbers revealed that the US gaming market saw a 17 percent decline in sales for the second month running. One game apparently hit hard by the decline was the PlayStation 3 exclusive touted as a "Halo killer" by Sony loyalists, Killzone 2. After years in the making and a reported $21 million budget, the game sold just 58,000 units last month, down from just more than 323,000 units in March. Add in the 296,000 units the game sold in two days on the market in February, and its US sales total stood at 677,000 as of April 30.

Helghan's coffers are not filling as fast as before.
Helghan's coffers are not filling as fast as before.

Drops like Killzone 2's are not uncommon. As explained by game-industry analyst Jesse Divnich in his analysis of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars' now-flat sales, most AAA games tend to fall off sharply after their first one or two months on the market.

That said, Microsoft partisans in the verbal console wars were quick to point out that Killzone 2's April sales were less that those of the 21-month-old Halo 3. The Xbox 360-only shooter sold 67,000 units domestically during the month, including limited and collector's editions, reported NPD. (Killzone 2 did not come in a collector's edition.) In its first three months on the domestic market, Halo 3 sold just more than 4 million units, with its life-to-date US total topping 6 million units as of last month.

The discrepancy between Killzone 2 and Halo 3 is eyebrow-raising, given both have roughly the same very high Metacritic scores. However, it has several rational explanations that don't reflect poorly on the PlayStation 3 or the game itself.

Even before it was on the Xbox 360, the Halo series was a cultural phenomenon, with a fan base much larger than that of the original 2004 Killzone for the PlayStation 2. Halo 3 is by far the most popular exclusive on the 360, which had a US installed base nearly twice that of the PS3 as of March--14.9 million to 7.5 million consoles, respectively. Microsoft has also aggressively discounted its error-prone hardware, with the cheapest (and hard-drive-less) model now $200 less than the $399 PlayStation 3.

Furthermore, Microsoft pulled out all the stops promoting Halo 3 in the weeks leading up to its $170 million launch day. With a marketing budget of more than $10 million, the game's trailer was attached to summer blockbusters, and its artwork appeared on everything from soda cans to junk-food bags.

Halo 3 also had the benefit of not launching in the midst of an economic downturn and shrinking game market. The lowered demand for games was reflected by NPD's top 10 list, particularly in 10th-place finisher The Godfather II (PS3), which sold only 91,000 units. In March, the tail-end game on the chart was 2K Sports' Major League Baseball 2K9 (360), with 205,000 units.

Here we go again does anybody take into consideration marketing/advertising and fan base?? obv not. Halos fan base is bigger due to previous games, and is advertised ALOT!.......I think i saw one advert for KZ2. and the previous killzone game was hardly a huge benchmark in FPS.... considering killzone 2 has not been out long and didnt have huge hype and/or advertising behind it... Its done very well. you cant compare it to a blockbuster title lmao its just stupid. sales dosent mean something is better. This game should sell off word of mouth, if you havnt played this game already online, MAYBE NOW IS THE TIME! =)

I mean i bought Stranglehold on Ps3 the day it came out(October), online was a virtual ghost town. But on Christmas day and beyond, shoot it was packed with online games a people were constantly jumping in and out and filling game rooms. So I wouldnt put much stock in Spring sales figures to gauge a games worth.

Sony still need to cut down on PS3 price. i mean, if they want to hit the bigger part, they gotta think about those who can't pay that much. i myself bought a 360 Elite for $540 and the PS3 was priced at $690 at the same shop. plus, many PS3 games could become Blu-Ray in the near future; Ha, are we gonna spend like $130 to grab one game?!?! and hey games developers, today is bad for business, better wait till the financial crisis cools further down.

@ Alex4 I do agree Sony could do so much better if they would get the lead out and advertise the crap out of something they were putting. Also do it in a normal fashion, not like the original PS3 commercials that were just plain creepy and probably pushed some people away. I'm still surprised that I don't see commercials for major Sony releases but Microsoft and Nintendo are always quick to put their product out there for just about anyone to see.

Sony needs to understand that to make money on something, you need to advertise the hell out of it. It's that simple. Microsoft did it for Halo 3 and Vista. Apple did it (and still does, mind you) for the iPhone and Macs. Come on Sony, save some dough for the show!

I have got both of them. Personally I think that Halo wasn't really good as it was supposed to be. I also agree that the story is in KZ2 is not great but does somebody really think that the one in Halo 3 was something to remember? Technically I think that KZ2 is much better than halo 3, let's give Sony some credit. Multiplayer in KZ2 is amazing while I do not like the one in halo 3 too much because you are always jumping around, but this is just my personal taste. Regards to everybody

Get ready floks cuz i'm about to say the most biased thing you ever heard: First of all. Everyone can expect M$ to have better advertising, better marketing, or whatever b/c frankly M$ has the cash to do just about everything. But honestly i played Halo 2 and 3 and, i just don't see the big deal that everyone thinks about when they hear Halo. I mean, my respect go to its multiplayer, yeah sure it's a lot of fun. But that's basicly the selling point for the game. Its story is all that either, the voice acting is ok, the ending was probably better (the legendary one) but it's main story sucked, the camera rewind thing isn't quite a big deal either. The graphics are ok for a shooter. Killzone 2 on the other hand has just about everything you need from a shooter. I think it's online play is just as good as Halo 3's and it doesn't even have as many customizing options as it does. The voice-acting isn't as bad as everyone's accusing it of having. The pace is far better than Halo's. The graphics are like WOW. K2 is truely a masterpiece when it comes to graphics. The story is an awesome way of getting you through the game. The AI is one million times better than Halo's. And yes I am referring to the Arbiter, and no i didn't have to much a million reviews to find that out on my own. Arbiter aside, the only major difference between the AI modes on Halo are the damage you receive from bullets. K2 has better AI and it actually feels like your enemies are getting smarter. Controls however were... meh. Everyone has to admit K2 controls were hard to get used to but since the patch, it plays just like Halo. In my opinion K2 is more of a full-trottle movie and Halo was just another Halo that Bungie was forced to shove out since M$ is hold Bungie as hostages till they win the console war. Honestly, there is no denying that, the only appealing game that's comming out at E3 would probably be Halo: OSDT which, is yes another Halo. It feels as if M$ is focusing its attention on Halo. And if its not halo it gears of war. And since most people were comparing the launch of Halo 3 to the arrival of the Messiah, take away a global crisis and what do you expect to happen. I think that it all had to do with the condition of the economy. So granted the state that we're in now, i think K2 is doing pretty darn well.

Killzone has always been a short fad. First game, PSP game, PS3 game. It comes out and wows people for a month or two and then it's gone. Killzone has no momentum. It's a decent plot with weak voice acting (excluding Brian Cox) overloaded with juvenile machismo. Gameplay could be the best ever and it would still be crippled by the story.

to ad to cloudtigerbb's statement, Killzone lacks a real "mascot" such as Master Chief. I know that is kinda cheesy but everyone knows Master Chief, love him or hate him. I for one would love to see both franchises continue.

Guys. Main idea: fourth grade English. The main idea of this passage is that despite both games being great video games, the Halo franchise has MUCH better marketing. That's pocket cash for Microsoft. Sure I saw the Killzone commercial, but I saw Halo crap all over Doritos, soda cans, ...yeah, they're right - blockbuster MOVIES previewing a damn Halo VIDEO GAME. Halo's had a HUGE fan base all up to the very first one, and Killzone's still working on its fan base. So, logically Killzone 2 is going to sell less than its competitor. I'm not surprised by this article at all. And here's what I have to say about economic times. I am laid off, and I sometimes wonder how I am going to pay my house note, car note, insurance, college loans, and other bills. But one thing that I always find absolutely hilarious are the parking lots of Best Buy and the AMC Theatres TOTALLY PACKED OUT AT ALL TIMES! What this means to me is that during an incredibly tough economic time, people turn to entertainment to feel better and come out feeling like life is fun and enjoyable. There is way too much to stress out about, and video games and movies are in my opinion going to be affected by an economy as hard as, say, expensive designer clothing, furniture, etc. I would actually be HAPPY that Killzone is doing as good as it is during our economy because it goes to show you that people are at least still buying video games and keeping video game developers alive. You can argue about Halo vs Killzone all you want, but all that matters to me is that the developers of these video games are being well taken care of during our recession. Microsoft's got Halo as an XBox staple and huge cash flow, so I don't worry about them. Sony, on the other hand, is beginning to lay off a lot of people. I just want to see developers be rewarded for great video games. That's all...

@ cocacolafresh Halo 3 was never meant to be realistic, it was meant to be fun. Honestly sitting there wondering why a game about aliens invading Earth and are being fended off by The Master Chief isn't realistic, I think the description of the game alone says it all. As for why the two are compared, its because Killzone was touted to be a Halo Killer, and once a game is labeled that (by the developers), its really hard to get away from that standard. As for being the best online FPS game (console wise), I think the numbers and level activity Halo 3 sees every day says enough. Obviously enough people out there find it fun enough to keep on playing it day after day after day. I can't speak about Call of Duty 4 or Killzone 2, but I know its a constant battle on Xbox Live between Call of Duty 4 and Halo 3 for most active game, plus its been 2 years since Halo 3 came out and its still seeing a decent amount of support and it doesn't appear to be letting up anytime soon.

i dont get how you could compare halo 3 and kz2. kz2 is probably the most realistic fps ever(not saying its better). halo 3 is probably the most UNrealistic fps ever(not saying its worse, but seriously...half a clip to kill a guy?). these 2 games arent really alike. i guess u could maybe compare halo to resistance, cuz it takes 3 damn bursts to kill a guy with marksman/BR(tho br needs all to be headshots) why is everyone comparing kz2 to halo 3? o.o

<< LINK REMOVED >> Watch this and you can see why Halo 3 sold so well. Too bad the game was nothing like this, I literally creamed in my pants when I saw this, and I'm sure 3,999,999 other people did the same thing.

That is sad because Killzone 2 really is the best online shooter that I have ever played (and I used to live on Halo 2). Halo 3 is nothing more than a graphical upgrade to Halo 2, but when you have insane commercials making people believe that it is going to be the best game ever I guess I can see why it has sold 4 million vs. KZ2's 700,000. I did not see one commercial for KZ2 on TV, Sony has got to realize that if you want screaming 12 year-olds extorting their love to their mommies to get a game, you need commercials, and also if you want to get anyone that is over 30 or has no idea about sites like GameSpot. Too bad, I was really wanting to pwn some 3.5 million noobs, I guess I'll have to settle with 700,000 hardcore gamers.

@ francisco49 From what ive heard the story in killzone sucks so bad you dont know whos talking. The story is also forgettable just like the characters. Halo is all about online. Who cares if it has a 5 hour story like you claim it does (its longer) 95% of the games that come out are about the online now a days. Nice attempt. PS3 is over priced and these sales number for "the best shooter available to play anywhere" are just plain pathetic.

@ francisco49 Wow, generalize and fanboy much? Here's what I find funny, Sony fanboys act like the PS3 is some great amazing deal that is the end all system if you want to play video games. They try to justify the high price of the console by claiming it somehow has something over the Xbox 360, yet time after time multiplatform games come out and they look the same on both platforms. In some cases they actually look better on the 360 (Fallout 3) and other games run in a better resolution (Street Fighter IV). Games that were said could only be done on the PS3, that were built from the ground up for the PS3, have suddenly jumped ship to the 360 (Final Fantasy XIII anyone?). Other games that made the Playstation and Playstation 2 what they were have slipped away and become multiplatform. Make or break games like Grand Theft Auto IV are now on the 360 and offer more content than the PS3 version. Content the PS3 has no chance at getting because Microsoft has secured this content for their users only. Devil May Cry and Tekken are on this list as well. The Red Ring of Death WAS an issue for awhile, but thanks to Microsoft taking the hit and doing the right thing, they repaired all the broken consoles for free (or replaced them), they extended the warranties out to cover everyone and would even repair a console outside of warranty (they did for me for my launch console), and they worked to make their console better and to fix the issue. Now its pretty much behind us, anything that could go wrong with the console is covered. If anything, people like you are just trying to justify your purchase. You are trying to find a way to justify the fact that the PS3 lacked many good games for a long time (abit over a year). You are trying to justify paying $400 to $600 for your console while most paid half for a 360. You are trying to justify sitting on a console that isn't nearly as supported as the 360, the online user base is about the same size as the Xbox Live community despite it being free. Developers prefer to work with the 360 (Valve is a major one) and companies are more likely to bring a previously PS3 exclusive to the 360 because the user base is so small with the PS3. The developers of Way of the Samurai 3 said that the main reason they were porting their game to the 360 was simply because the user base is too small on the PS3 and they can't make money focusing just on that console. Other developers that supported the PS3 (Free Radical) went under shortly after because they couldn't make enough to make up for production costs. Main point is in this wall of text, everything you said isn't based on any fact. It mainly comes off as you trying to justify your purchase and you're angry because others are getting the same quality of gaming you got (if not better).

its funny how all these fan boys back up the 360 saying its the same quality as the ps3 just a cheaper price. These people clearly have no brain because before all my friends bought a 360 because (THEY COULDNT AFFORD THE PS3) and now they regret it after the 360 broken down so many times and now want to buy a PS3 even thought its expensive because they know its a great buy. all you people just want to feel like you did a great buy with that piece of crap 360. by the way i know a lot of people who Hated Halo 3 mainly because bad 5 Hour MAX long story which was crap and dumb extra futures that only make the game harder and adds no new excitement plus online is only great because a lot of people suck up to Halo. Halo was only great when it came out then halo 2 killed it and halo 3 just finished it off... disappointment.

PS3 is more expensive. Not only does the PS3 have a smaller user base, but the prohibitive cost of the console eats into money that would otherwise be spent on games. And Halo is a much more recognised series - it much 'created' the Xbox (it was the game that EVERYONE got as their first game, at least for early adopters) and everyone knows it, even people that don't play games. There. Mystery about KZ2 v H3 sales solved.

Killzone 2 was never going to be a Halo 3 killer. Just like Killzone wasn't a Halo 2 killer. I don't think the developers seriously thought it was in the Halo league in terms of popularity but the media (like Gamespot and other game sites) have been the ones incorrectly branding KZ1 and KZ2 as Halo killers. Perhaps the editors of these sites need to reign in their overexcited Playstation reviewers so they don't go building up a non-event?

@ fps_d0minat0r Check out my profile. I own a 360 and a PS3. I actually don't like Halo 3 or Forza. I love playing both Gears of War, Mass Effect, and Lost and Damned. Great games. I don't like MGS4, mainly because I feel like I watched it more than played it...pretty boring. Also, I didn't like KZ2. It had amazing graphics, but it just wasn't fun. I'd rather have unrealistic controls if it means that I'll actually enjoy it. GT5...you can have it and Forza. I just don't like sim racing games. I did however like Resistance 2 and I love Uncharted and MLB 09, and I'm looking forward to playing inFamous. Probably more of a COD fan than anything. So, I guess you're wrong, huh bud?

BTW i got both the PS3 and 360, they both have their strengths and weaknesses ! PS3: expensive!! free online = good foundation, but not the best psn store is limited trophies - the percentage thing is gay in my opinion amazing media center device - media streaming/Linux/ Blu-Ray Sixaxis remotes MGS4 :) Little big planet :) Motorstorm :) Killzone = multiplayer is FUN! but story is a lump of S&!% 360: CHEAP amazing online execution = you must PAY :( but your paying for quality Achievement (the points thing i like more) = when done well is great and fun - but lazy developers fail to execute it properly no more ring of death Halo 3 :) Gears 1-2 :) Crackdown :) Halo wars -yes i know it got a 6 from GS but its average Critic score was an 8! wide selection of DLC! = aka. extra game play and fun arcade games #note this is my opinion so stop hating!

@ GrilledCharlie my point was that the controls act like your playing as a human unlike other games like COD and halo. anyways apart from that you know the rest is true. next time dont spend ur money on something thats "error-prone" and has a lack of good exclusives. keep playing halo, gears, halo, forza, gears, halo, halo, gears, forza and PGR. their the only decent games. whats next, ur gonna say PGR and forza stand upto GT5? give me a break dude......stop making life difficult for everyone, its a no-brainer PS3 has better exclusives.

@ The_Unknown_B "This piece is why my professors laugh when I bring up gaming journalism, because its pathetic and a joke." "Like I said there is a reason why no one in the professional media respects you gaming journalist." You have a lot of nerve badmouthing people in your apparent future profession who actually have jobs and live in the real world. You are still in school, and haven't experienced what it's like to compete for a job. You think that because you come to an interview with a degree and an open mind that you're gonna get a job? Guess what? He got payed to write this article. You will be lucky to even score an internship at a local publication at no pay, let alone actually use your degree to get a paycheck in your first 3 years out of school. All written publications are dying, so I hope you can even find a job as a janitor at a web based publication, because that is the only place for a journalist to have a future. Also, don't take your professor's word as unquestionable truth. After all, those who can't do, teach. Think for yourself, and do what you want to do.

Spartan_Roman I respect ur opinion but most of the internet is establish off ignorance and perference. its funny how a 9.0 rated game is bad. Over hyped, loyality, and perference is an embrassment to the journalism world and gaming journalism gets 3/3. No one but the MEDIA dubbed this game a "Halo Killer" and like sheep fans follow. The media is responsible for hype the media is responsible for flame wars. This media is corrupt, unjust and pathetic. If there was anymore respectable sites I would be lucky or in a perfect world. until real journalism comes to this genre Im stuck with IGN and GS

Killzone 2 has not made any innovation in the FPS genre and thats why it does not appeal to many fans(Nearly all my PS3 owning friends were turned off by the demo).KIllzone also has a bad history, the first game was horrible. And nearly everyone knows that KZ2 would have a bad story.Halo meanwhile has a fantastic history and great multiplayer. You can very easily relate to Master Chief which makes the story good(Yes,it is good) .And everybody knows that Halo 3 has sold a fantastic amount of games, nearly double what the best selling ps3 game sold. This facts combined to make certain that KZ2 whatever Sony fanboys say, unable to beat Halo 3.And when Halo 3:ODST comes out.......

The_Unknown_B The Konami rumour was in the rumour section.GS didnt say MGS Oxide was konamis new game. They have just posted that rumour so we readers can have fun and think of all the possibilities of whats going on.And if the above article was to show support for Halo ,thden why was there the explanation why KIllzone 2 didnt do better than Halo was not because the game was bad.Sheesh.

this why gaming generalism well never be taken serious in the mainstream media. This piece is why my professors laugh when I bring up gaming journalism, because its pathetic and a joke. So many rules of ethics are broken here on this site its not funny. IGN has now done a better job of cleaning up their act, but GS has a lot more sweeping it has to do. For example of its broken journalism is the konami rumor. They are trusting an unrealiable source and acting upon it, ign comment on the meat of this rumor but didn't jump to saying metal gear solid oxide for the 360 is topping microsoft conference but GS did. Its clear these guys are a joke and let their emotions get in the way of their judgement, I wish this site would drop in stock so real journalist can take over and these idoits are shown how much of a joke they really are. This article is clearly an instigation, this is a PS3 game on the 360 news banter jus to show the 360 supporters that this game is not what you thought so live in your halo glory. Pathetic when poltics and perference influences what your writing. Like I said there is a reason why no one in the professional media respects you gaming journalist

Killzone 2 sold 58,000 units in April (been available for 3 months) Halo 3 sold 67,000 units in April (been available for 21 months) No it's not the recession it's the fact Killzone 2 is not as good as Halo 3 (or many other shooters for that matter). Sony fanboys can spin it all they like but the facts are still the facts and Halo 3 outselling Killzone 2 at this point shows that gamers agree Halo 3 is a better game!

Infecting people saying Killzone is better than Halo? Im trying to infect a few people with common sense but apparently thats not infectous. Killzone 2 has an awful storyline but plays like it was never really written to have one. Halo 3 plays like someone tried to make a great story and ended up with failing miserably. They're completely different styles of gameplay, dont compare the two. Anyone who says one is better than the other is full of crap. It comes down to personal preference. They're two high quality shooters but personally I prefer the feel of Killzone 2 to Halo 3. Killzone 2 is a stripped down, pure first person shooter. Theres no fluff, theres no shine, theres heres a gun, theres the enemy, shoot them. I havent seen this sort of raw gameplay in a long time. Its refreshing to see that core mechanics can be fun and to see someone who doesnt need to dress up their gameplay with all sorts of flashy extras but gets it done with the basics and gets it done well. I love Killzone 2. But difference of opinion doesnt change the fact that Halo 3 has an awful story. Lol. BTW if the only books you read are ones based on games you've played, you havent read a book. It doesnt count. Because then you're feeding the deficiency by pretending you're judging the material. You need to read a quality book thats not based on your game. Read War of the Worlds, read Lord of the Rings, read 2001: A Space Odyssey, read Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, read the Sword of Shannara. Read a classic by a master author, and then decide what a quality story is.

I don't think it's anything to do with either game, we are in an economic problem atm and all games are suffering, there is 6-7 games i really want this year, but due to finances i may only get 3 of them because of the financial situation
