Killzone 2's rate of fire slows in April

NPD reports Sony's long-awaited FPS sells only 58,000 in its third month on the US market--roughly 9,000 units less than Halo 3; US total now 677,000.

Last week's release of the April NPD numbers revealed that the US gaming market saw a 17 percent decline in sales for the second month running. One game apparently hit hard by the decline was the PlayStation 3 exclusive touted as a "Halo killer" by Sony loyalists, Killzone 2. After years in the making and a reported $21 million budget, the game sold just 58,000 units last month, down from just more than 323,000 units in March. Add in the 296,000 units the game sold in two days on the market in February, and its US sales total stood at 677,000 as of April 30.

Helghan's coffers are not filling as fast as before.
Helghan's coffers are not filling as fast as before.

Drops like Killzone 2's are not uncommon. As explained by game-industry analyst Jesse Divnich in his analysis of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars' now-flat sales, most AAA games tend to fall off sharply after their first one or two months on the market.

That said, Microsoft partisans in the verbal console wars were quick to point out that Killzone 2's April sales were less that those of the 21-month-old Halo 3. The Xbox 360-only shooter sold 67,000 units domestically during the month, including limited and collector's editions, reported NPD. (Killzone 2 did not come in a collector's edition.) In its first three months on the domestic market, Halo 3 sold just more than 4 million units, with its life-to-date US total topping 6 million units as of last month.

The discrepancy between Killzone 2 and Halo 3 is eyebrow-raising, given both have roughly the same very high Metacritic scores. However, it has several rational explanations that don't reflect poorly on the PlayStation 3 or the game itself.

Even before it was on the Xbox 360, the Halo series was a cultural phenomenon, with a fan base much larger than that of the original 2004 Killzone for the PlayStation 2. Halo 3 is by far the most popular exclusive on the 360, which had a US installed base nearly twice that of the PS3 as of March--14.9 million to 7.5 million consoles, respectively. Microsoft has also aggressively discounted its error-prone hardware, with the cheapest (and hard-drive-less) model now $200 less than the $399 PlayStation 3.

Furthermore, Microsoft pulled out all the stops promoting Halo 3 in the weeks leading up to its $170 million launch day. With a marketing budget of more than $10 million, the game's trailer was attached to summer blockbusters, and its artwork appeared on everything from soda cans to junk-food bags.

Halo 3 also had the benefit of not launching in the midst of an economic downturn and shrinking game market. The lowered demand for games was reflected by NPD's top 10 list, particularly in 10th-place finisher The Godfather II (PS3), which sold only 91,000 units. In March, the tail-end game on the chart was 2K Sports' Major League Baseball 2K9 (360), with 205,000 units.

just came back to see what GS has been upto after i quit. looks like their still adding fuel to the fire on the console war......pathetic really. oh well, atleast their not bashing the PS3 for being a great system anymore and admit xbox is error-prone. everyone knows which game has better audio, graphics, physics, AI, hit response system, cover system, realism, online modes, maps, number of players, intense campaign......all leading to better gameplay. some may be shy to admit it, but no need for this useless article.

@Rottenwood, Here's a question. Have you actually PLAYED Killzone 2? It might SEEM to be a generic shooter in comparison to Halo3, but as aforementioned both are completely separate titles and both have their own unique and distinguished appeal. You can't judge a book by it's cover and to do so is ignorant. While your opinion is just that it's based on poor assumptions. You ASSUME the game is hollow, bland, and overall generic but... You haven't played it. The game has done excellent considering it's been an uphill struggle against a suffering economy.

What a ridiculous flame bait article. Yes, we all know nothing can touch Halo's popularity, blah, blah, blah. Pitting Killzone 2 against Halo has always been stupid. How about this: they're BOTH great games. Killzone 2 is a great shooter. The campaign was balls to the wall every minute and the multiplayer is awesome (not to mention the production value is INSANE). WORLDWIDE this game is approaching the 2 million mark and will likely end up around 3 million lifetime sales... that's pretty dang good folks.

There is no better game than MGS4 at the time. It delivers a punch in quite all of the directions the video game should. And yes, It's the reason you just have to buy PS3. No game can compete with that one, be it on PC or XBOX. However, I don't know a game on the BOX that was so flawless and acclaimed, to be the only reason to buy it along with the console. I don't remember anyone saying "I bought 360 because of HALO" or "because of Fable 2", however you can hear everywhere people saying that they've bought PS3 because of MGS4. BTW I'm the one too. And also I haven't heard people saying the same thing about KZ 2. So if you really want to compare a PS3 masterpiece to the 360 headliner, you better pick up the proper one. MGS FTW.

I agree, why bring this up unless they want people to debate. Personally I stopped playing Killzone 2 after around the same amount of time I stopped playing Halo 3, I moved onto Shadow of Colossus which is a pretty epic game.

Yeh 360 might be cheaper (And i am NOT a fanboy, I have both consoles) But i still think PS3 is the better console. Don't get me wrong i love 360 but i love my PS3 more. Also with Halo and Killzone 2....bit of a stupid comparison because as StarlightHunter rightly said they are too completely different games. I know that PS3 needs a few more exclusives but the exclusives that it has already are pretty damn awesome. (Not including Haze)

even if you crunch the numbers (albeit very rough), they still made about 19 million of profit, so that is not bad...its not like this game did poorly at all I do not know why there is even a news story about this

Killzone 2 is just a generic playing shooter with a cool cover system. It's still a FPS amongst 1,000,000 other FPS. Your going to have to do more than they did to have something phenomenal. I'm not saying Halo games are like that - they just have a huge fanbase. But I do get more out of Halo 3 then I did with KZ2. Thats just my opinion though. PS3 needs to get more exclusives out - thats a huge reason I sold my PS3 because there was nothin that great to get for it outside of MGS4 and MLB The Show. Again - thats my taste and I'll put money on it that some immature fanboy will light me up but thats alright. I'm getting a PS3 again though - I miss the Show - Best baseball game EVER!!

@taylormadederek $60, thats around 38 british pounds. Thats quite a lot. Don't you hunt for bargains? powerplaydirect has KZ2 for 23 pounds, around $36. You should wait a little while for the bargains and then look around for them. I have 10 PS3 games and haven't paid over 20 quid, $31, for any of them, brand new.

Wasn't too fussed by the Killzone 2 single player campaign, but loved the multiplayer, which in some ways I find superior to Halo 3 for depth.

There goes corporate America again. Just because the game is not selling 1,000,000,000 copies in 2 days does not mean the product failed. I am sure this will be a pick for at least two years.

@taylormadederek I take my time. I savour them like a fine wine lol. Plus I play other bits and pieces in between; enjoying Suikoden at the mo. But in response to what you say about there not being many games for the PS3, not true. It has the same amount of quality titles as the 360 and a lot more than the Wii. So I disagree. @Rottenwood And Rottenwood, 2-3 games a month? When do you find the time to finish them? How do you get past the wife having a go when you do play? Mine is threatening to destroy my PS3, so any tips would be nice.

Speaking as someone who buys about 2-3 games a month, I can say that I've never had any remote interest in Killzone 2. The title is generic and sounds like the name a game would have on The Simpsons when they make fun of violent video games. The commercials were bland and hollow, too. However good this game might be, nothing about it stands out. With a thousand games on the shelf, marketing is just as important as quality. Selling action games in a poor economy for $60 is an uphill climb, too. Too many people have been burned on 'good-for-a-weekend' actioners at full retail.

I agree with taylormadederek and DebilasAntrasis / The only true reason the game didn't sell as well as sony wanted it too is because sony in my view blew the gamers hype up for the game prematurely and then the hype had no where to go from there but down. Microsoft did the opposite of what sony did, they blew their product up so hard in gamers and kept that hype going by constantly fueling the flames with other incentives until halo could be shipped out and well managed to put their product out before the hype cooled. Heck I was even hyped up for halo 3 and I totally hated the halo series due to its kiddie looking aliens and non-impressive looking weapons. I just think gamers waited too long for the game and the hype faded and people just lost interest in the title...

Why do people keep saying that sales figures don't matter? Ask Sony or Guerrilla Games if the sales numbers matter. Also, sales numbers can give us a idea of what gamers think of a game. COD4 blew away COD 2 or 3 in sales on 360 because of word of mouth. COD4 is a great game, and it sold a ton on 360 and PS3 because people loved it, and told their friends. If KZ2 was such a great game, then it would have better sales from PS3 owners telling other PS3 owners how great it is. That is obviously not happening, because maybe its not as great as a small minority of PS3 owners think it is. I think that KZ2 sold mediocre because people played the demo with the horrendous controls, and then canceled their pre-orders. That is why it was reported to have 1 million pre-orders, and then didn't hit 1 million in sales for weeks. I for one, bought KZ2, played through the single player and hated it because of the controls. I've played with the control patch, and it still frustrated me, even online, and I've given more than enough chances. I don't really like Halo 3 either, but at least it has tight controls. If you can't tell, I'm a big COD fan.

Not really surprised by this, considering the first Killzone was a steaming pile. I played this at my buddy's house since I wasn't gonna spead the 70 bucks and I'm glad I didn't. Sure it looked great but the gameplay was so boring.

Agreed DebilasAntrasis \ Two things: The PS3 does not support software very well relative to the 360. You can look on VGCHARTZ.com and see yourself. Resistance 2, LBP, Motostorm...and on and on did not sell very well at all considering their reputations. \ The second thing is that if a game is good and does not have a huge base....(Halo) it can still sell amazing if it is truly good.....look at how well Gears of War did and Left 4 Dead, as well as Dead Space. Now Gears of War and Left 4 Dead play into my first point but still. \ Killzone 2's worldwide sales are still high and a great accomplishment for the development team. However they are a fail for Sony. There is no reason why a game this long in development and this hyped could not have sold much better.

The KZ2 demo is very enjoyable and I do want to buy it. I just haven't caught up with all my PS3 games yet. Need to finish Dead Space and Fallout 3, haven't even started Valkyria Chronicles yet and then I want to go back through them and my other games to get the trophies. THEN I will buy KZ2! Phew, can't say there are no games to buy for the PS3 anymore can you?

First off, it's a shame. Killzone 2 gets alot of flame, and of course it doesn't have the best storyline, although I thought it was good, but the game itself is a pretty solid shooter. Secondly, this article was good at first, then just became a Halo 3 article? We all know Killzone 2 doesn't have the fanbase, nor will it ever reach the sales of Halo, and this article feels more of a Halo 3 sales biography.

Wait... so this whole news article is an attempt to defend Killzone 2's numbers despite the fact Halo 3 is outselling it? Original release day advertising doesn't have much of an effect 21 months later. And both games are attempting to sell during the recession, so no big difference there... Lets face it Halo is the 'Halo' of the X360 and Killzone is the Halo of the PS3... the important thing is both of them are their consoles equivalent 'Halo' and that is why one sells better than the other.

The number of consoles in the marketplace has a direct bearing on the number of games sold. If Killzone had been a cross platform game it would have done even better. But, I agree, that Sony needs to make the PS3 more price competative to it 360 rival.

While I agree that the information provided in this article is all factual and probably not based on a biased opinion. But I fail too see the point in comparing sales for games in a period of time in which the entire industry is showing declines in sales, other than creating a flame war in comments. We all know the sales for Killzone 2 are not going to be as high as Halo 3 at this time; the main reason being that Killzone 2 was released in a period where the economy is in such bad shape. We already know that game sales in general have been low for the month of April; it should come at no surprise then, that you'd expect a decrease in sales for a game the belongs on a console with a higher price tag. This is elementary economics and has nothing to do with the quality of the game (which is mentioned in the article). Anyone who believes that Killzone 2 isn't selling well now because its not as "good" as Halo 3 is sadly and utterly mistaken. Before anyone accuses me of flaming, let me just say I own both consoles, and I am a fan of both Killzone 2 and Halo 3 and I play both regularly. I will be honest and say that right now I am playing Halo 3 more because of the split screen factor, as I normally play when I have friends over. This article in my opinion is purely flame bait, and the only thing coming out of it is a massive amount of fanboys arguing in the comments.

Gamespot, PLEASE just give us the news. We've all already heard the Xbox fanboy rant - we don't need you to publish it attached to some "news" as an excuse. Are you trying to encourage flame wars? All consoles on the market have great games; you should be encouraging people to look at multiple options instead of just one (especially considering the current economic downfall). This is now the second knock to PS3 owners I've seen in your news section (the first being a completely unnecessary comment about Fallout 3 DLC). I am not a fanboy to PS3 - I own all the systems and play my Xbox 360 more than the others so I'm not biased. It just bugs me that you seem to love supporting one side over another when you should be equally promoting all parties involved.

Sales don't mean a thing, it's still a tight game....and when did consumers care about sales anyway? NDP only reported the U.S. sales numbers for Killzone 2 and Halo 3, Halo 3 been out for like 3 years now, Killzone 2 just got released. The industry cares about total world wide sales numbers, not just 1 region, holla back when you have a total world wide sales number for the 2 games Gamespot!

All fanboys must die! (PS3 and Xbox alike). Bhinder94, you need to chill out, why get so worked up? its a game get over it, anyone would think they just insulted your mother. As a 360 owner I gave Halo3 a go, wasn't that impressed, having played KZ2 on my brothers PS3 i thought it was the better of the two. I never played the first two Halos so wasn't bothered about the story, and game play wise it wasn't anything new. For me KZ2 was more entertaining, but let down by the PS3 controller.

I must say I wasn't that impressed with Killzone 2. After watching the beautiful cutscenes with graphics I had never seen before anywhere, it turned into a run and gun pointless action game...nothing to keep me engaged in the story...if it had one. I think Resistance 2 was better than Killzone 2 tbh. Halo 3, I didnt really think was all that either. But Halo 1 and COD 4, now those are great shooter games that keep you immersed in the story. I was smiling for weeks after completing those games.
