Kojima has no plans to license Fox Engine to small developers

The Fox Engine will not be made available to small developers due to licensing difficulties.

Kojima Productions studio head Hideo Kojima has confirmed that there are currently no plans to license the Fox Engine to small developers. The studio had initially issued a statement in 2011 announcing that a tailored version of the Fox Engine would be available to schools and small developers.

No Caption Provided

Speaking to Gamasutra at last week's Kojima Productions Los Angeles event, the Metal Gear creator said it would be "too difficult" to license the Fox Engine at this point in time, and withdrew the studio's 2011 statement.

"A lot of maintenance will be involved if we're to get the Fox Engine in a workable enough state to license it," Kojima said. "[As a result] at the moment there are no plans to license it to schools or other organisations."

Kojima did not rule out all options, saying that the studio is "always open to discussing it with companies one on one."

The Fox Engine was first showcased at the Metal Gear 25th Anniversary event on August 30 last year. Kojima has since explained that one of the goals in creating the engine was to achieve photo-realism.

The game will feature returning protagonist Snake, and introduces a number of tweaked gameplay components.

Kojima Productions is currently working on Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain for the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. The game currently has no announced release date.

Didn't he say recently that if someone wants to remake MGS1 on Fox, he will let them?

@Vu2010 It was because he said the whole "to sell merchandise" thing which pretty much directly objectifies women because the selling feature is that she's mostly naked. We'll see how effective her character is and, yeah, maybe he has a good reason for the nakedness. Selling merchandise though, he should not have said.

They engine could really shine for an MMO, it would be much easier to add content to the game.

I like the look of this engine. It seems to be the only next gen engine that doesn't focus on pushing as many graphical effects as possible and showing as many details as possible. I mean, if you look through the window the world doesn't look as vibrant, sharp and detailed as some game engines try to make it. You just don't see every tiny detail from every angle possible. Not every game needs photo-realism ofcourse, but I'm talking about the ones that try to achieve it.

@Claudu Except that Fox engine doesn't shine, at all, in terms of realism unless it's in an in-door environment. I've seen the videos and screenshots and the Fox engine in MGS5 really does not impress at all, the animations look terribly realistic but the lighting does not.

@Grenadeh @Claudu I wouldn't agree. I think it looks pretty damn good. As I said, it's not as advanced in terms of effects as CryEngine or Frostbite, but IMO it has a lot more realistic colors and lighting. If you look at individual elements they are not super impressive, but the overall look and feel of the visuals is stunning.

@Timmy_Gwar @Claudu @Grenadeh That's how this kind of terrain looks. I wouldn't call it bleak. There are no grey-brown filters or anything. It looks as it's supposed to. We'll probably see more variety anyway. Besides, I think you're mistaking "bleak" with "not over-saturated". Because that's how games look these days. They're either super colorful or depressingly brown and grey. MGS 5 just looks... normal.

Hopefully they will allow other AAA developers to license the engine otherwise it will be a missed opportunity. With the exception of Pro Evo Soccer and the Castlevania series, what other franchises does Konami have that would make use of it? It doesn't sound like they have any plans for a new ZOE game after the low sales of the HD collection. Konmai has also dumped the Suikoden franchise for reasons unknown. I am very curious how the Fox Engine would run on PS3. Time will tell, though by the time MGS5 is released, I bet I will have a PS4 anyways.

@Xristophoros I want new ZOE. Its ridiculous how he based a new ZOE game on whether the HD sales were good or not.

Since it's still so new, relatively speaking, it's probably not the engine you want students learning on except for experimental usage anyway.

Few things to note:
The game utilizing the Fox Engine have not yet reached the core gamers.

Small time developers are prolly be making site, mobile, independent games, & are definitely using the free open source engines.

That'd be early to rush for Fox Engine as quoted by Kojima "A lot of maintenance will be involved if we're to get the Fox Engine in a workable enough state to license it," that means a quite (not quiet :p) bit of system format and hardware setup be required as it is apparent thereof.

Well, he did not HAVE to license it, it is their chocie. Besides, with awesome options available for free (Unreal, CryEngine and Unity being good examples) I suppose students and small developers are already well served.

@Bellum_Sacrum @Printul_Noptii You do realize there are tons of pirates on consoles too, right? They would already have the game made all they would have to do is add keyboard controls and graphics settings. Not really that hard at all.
