Last Of Us Part 2 Release Date Confirmed For February 2020 On PS4

Ellie's adventure is almost here.

During the company's latest State of Play presentation, Sony announced the release date for The Last of Us Part II via a new trailer, which you can watch above. The game is scheduled to release for PS4 on February 21, 2020. We've also now gotten to go hands-on with Last of Us II, so be sure to check out our extensive preview for an even better look at the game than State of Play provided.

Prior to the presentation, Sony had remained rather quiet on the PS4 exclusive. The company first surprised the world with the reveal of The Last of Us Part II in late 2016, before releasing a new gore-filled trailer for the game in 2017 and then showing off the title's brutal-looking gameplay in another trailer during E3 2018. However, there hasn't been much in regards to the game in 2019. Until today.

Now Playing: The Last Of Us Part 2 Coming In February - GS News Update

Gameplay-wise, The Last of Us Part II looks exceptionally violent--and we love it. Though we've seen sweet moments in the game too, like a grown Ellie kissing her crush and being terrified at the prospect of dancing with her and exploring their connection, The Last of Us Part II is clearly leaning into the worst aspects of what survival might look like in a post-apocalyptic world. We've seen Ellie slit the throat of a man for just being in her way, painfully pulling out an arrow lodged into her shoulder, and sinking an ax into an enemy's skull with a bloody crunch.

The Last of Us Part II looks a bit more action-oriented than its predecessor. Ellie is equipped with a loadout of weapons that's similar to what Joel carried on him in The Last of Us, but Ellie finds herself in more open-ended spaces that present more options in how to dispatch a group of enemies. You can shimmy beneath a vehicle to sneak past a guard, attract enemies to certain locations to ambush them, tumble over obstacles to get behind cover more quickly, and slip between narrow hallways in the environment to escape larger foes.

I think this will be a very good game, but I also think the reviews will be glowing 10/10's regardless because it has a lesbian protagonist. I do not care either way. But it should not skew review scores so I hope they stay fixated on the game itself and not some idiotic agenda.

I tried TLOU and absolutely couldn't shake the feeling that this was a walking/dialog simulator. Will TLOU 2 be the same just with added horses?

@93ChevyNut: How long did you play it? I didn't play it until the remaster on PS4, so I came to the party late, and, for a good while I was thinking "THIS is what everyone was raving about?" Then right around, I forget, but maybe five, six hours it hits its groove and I thought "Ah. Now I get it."

Get past Pittsburgh. Find the story of Ish. If you don't like it after that, then it isn't for you.

@93ChevyNut: maybe it's just not for you. Very similar to uncharted.. heavy emotionally driven narrative.... solid gameplay,, and amazing performances and graphics.. I dont think theres a part in the last of us where you walk a minute straight without something happening... talking simulator? That just seems to me like you dont appreciate story driven games... there was always something going on in the game. But hey. Dont play it. I've made a connection with this world.. the wife actually loved watching me play it for the action and story and shes excited for this too.

@mistertech: That is true. Story doesn't really mean much to me anymore. I'm not sure why, but then again I'm not sure it ever mattered to me. If gameplay isn't solid, it's just not for me. TLOU remastered is a PS+ game this month I think, I might have to give it another try.

@robbehG: True, I didn't. I remember hating Demon Souls when I first bought it because I tried to play it like a hack n slash. Once I figured out how the gameplay mechanics worked, it became one of my favorite games. Maybe I just didn't give TLOU much of a chance or I was approaching it wrong.

@93ChevyNut: It does seem more action orientated this time around. A chick filled with hormones goes on a killing spree to kill every one out there..

My only worry is the story. Is it simply based on Ellie going out to murder everyone because of love lost over murder?

That is pretty thin like a Steven Seagal movie.Must be more to it.

@93ChevyNut: I agree. I wasn't overwhelmed by TLOU either, but like most PS exclusives I liked it more than 80% of the other games I played that year. I'll be waiting for a deep discount before I jump into TLOU 2.

It seems that the first 3 ½ months of 2020 will be packed with quality to the point of filling up most of the year in gaming time for me.

TLoU part 2 - 21/2/20

FF7 Remake - 3/3/20

Watch Dogs: Legion - 6/3/20

Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines 2 - (Early 2020, date to be announced)

Cyberpunk 2077 - 16/4/20

Not an issue as such but it seems that my backlog will be getting somewhat inflated once again. #FirstWorldProblems

@gotrekfabian: Which I find weird. Not the glut of games; I find that awesome. What's weird is that new consoles are coming out so soon after all of this. Such a knock on the last consoles (especially PS4) was the lack of launch titles. Six months ago, I would've bet at least TLOU2 and Cyberpunk would've been on new machines. And Watch Dogs. And, although it's even earlier, Death Stranding. I very much hope that we're not getting too much, too soon, and the first year and a half of the new consoles is nothing but remasters of your list.

@olddadgamer: Yeah, I hear you there. Chances are that most of those games will appear as a PS5 version but I'm hoping that we'll have a good few games to come. I have a feeling that GTA VI will come soon after next gen's launch as we have only had one this generation and that was an upgrade from the PS3/XB360.

A lack of software is commonplace in the early months of a new console but, thanks to x86 architecture, Sony will have no excuse to not have backwards compatibility out of the box allowing us immediate access to our current library. If they don't then they'll evoke an absolute ****storm from their userbase and potentially "lose the next gen race".

All that being said we could still be wrong about PS5's 2020 launch. 🤣

@gotrekfabian: almost agree with all of that except watch dogs. If that's your series cool. Personally I think its typical ubisoft to overpromise and under deliver. Watch dogs 2 was a hipster nightmare but they added some cool stuff.. I think they need to find thier own identity and stop trying to match what currently is a hot topic in the world... plus I think it's more of the same. Big gimmick with the player switching. However cyberpunk will be sick. Luckily I snagged a collector's. Same with the last of us...

@mistertech: Ooh, you b1tch! 🤬 I tried to get my TLoU collector's edition today but they were sold out in the UK by the time I got back home in the early evening. eBay touts beat me to it once again!

Watch Dogs isn't for everyone but I like that you can recruit different types of people all with different styles. Games with realism have a lot of draw for me but Watch Dogs has taken a different route this time and gone for fun and comedy over the frankly mediocre story and characters from the last game. To be honest, I will be foregoing it on launch due to the glut of games but it will be on my "must play" list.

@Utnayan: First one was pretty boring. Second one was quite a surprise of improvement. Very varied missions, more colourful setting. Quite liked it.

The only thing that Ubisoft rarely nails is a good strong memorable protagonist.

@Utnayan: I don't comprehend what you mean, I'm afraid. Are you trying to say that Legion won't be worthy of purchase? From what I saw at E3 it looks like one of the most fun games currently in development and I'm not alone in that thought.

@gotrekfabian: Yes I say that. Based on all experience with most Ubisoft games. Division 2 failed the end game. Watchdogs, in my opinion, has never been good. They are destroying Ghost Recon in the latest release. Not saying I may not rent it or get it on a steep sale if I am bored, but with Cyberpunk 2077, TLOU2, those 2 alone will keep me busy until WatchDogs Legions hits the bargain bin where the last two games belonged from launch.

@gotrekfabian: When I started actively trying to rid myself of my backlog about 6 years ago, I started referring to all of the games that I haven't bought yet as my "wishlist" games. This immediately took about 200 games out of my backlog and allowed it to become slightly more manageable.

I'm only writing for the people who are actively trying to figure out a way to overcome their unbearably huge backlog. Since I started in late 2013, I've whittled my backlog down from 400+ games to the current number of only 28 games. My current wishlist is at about 120 games, but I revise that periodically and frequently remove games that I'm no longer interested in buying.

@jsprunk: Wow, 200 games is one hell of a backlog. I'm just above where you are now, 36 games, as well as a few that I'd like to go back to (but probably never will!). My wishlist is nowhere near yours though and only stands at about 15 or so thankfully.

Some see my hobby as expensive and childish and whilst money is required to keep playing what you want it is mostly people I go to the pub with and spend £80-£100 pounds on a night out every couple of weeks who seem to make that judgement on me!

@jsprunk: I run a similar system. I have several back log games that I own, but through various reasons never got to play or finish, and then run a list of games to buy and play later. That checklist especially runneth over. Also, through Games With Gold, Twitch, Humble, etc. there are many free games that I've gotten that are on the list.

I am curious about how you whittled your backlog down though? Aside from eliminating wishlist games, of course. I feel like much of my problem is my affinity for RPGs which almost always take a while to complete, especially when you have limited play time.

@lionheartssj1: Yeah, when you have a constant backlog lists have to be kept or some games will be lost within the collection. I never intended to become a games hoarder but I own over 400 physical games from various formats and I have sold plenty as well.

RPG is also one of my favourite genres which, as you say, take up a lot of time. I played Kingdom Come: Deliverance this year for example which took around 220 hours due to also playing to obtain my platinum trophy. Games like these are definitely a contributor to my backlog. If I ditched the trophy hunting I could likely cut down my backlog but can I do that? Aaaah, the quandaries!

@gotrekfabian: Oh yea, I definitely had to give up achievement/trophy hunting. There was a short time there where I tried to get them all before I finished playing a title and it put me way behind on what I wanted to play.

@lionheartssj1: I use the website How Long to Beat to keep track of my backlog. I started using it in early 2014, and it's helped me immensely. I actually have two lists for my backlog. The "main" backlog list is the list with 28 games on it. These are the games that I am 75% sure I will want to play from start to finish at least once. This list was very large when I started with 400+ games on it. I did delete some games from this list without finishing them because they either really sucked or they were really bugged. That probably accounted for about 40 games overall. And as I said before, I split off all of my unpurchased wishlist games, which accounted for about 200 games.

I also have a "custom" backlog list on that same website that has about 75 games on it. However, those are basically games I got for free from various digital stores like the Epic store or GOG that looked too interesting to pass up, but I'm only about 20% sure I'm going to like them. A lot of these games are F2P messes that I may delete completely after only a few hours playing. I honestly don't include this as my backlog, since I may never play any of these "custom" games, and I won't care a single bit if I don't.

I have to say, after creating these lists, I've never had more fun playing the games I own. I also don't treat it like a job. I go into playing a game with the intention of having fun, and I generally don't quit playing until I'm done and satisfied. Games I really like, I spend a LOT of time playing. I spent ~300 hours playing Borderlands 2 and all of it's DLC. Games that I find mediocre, I play through once and move on, or maybe I relegate them to a "Play Again Later" list.

I keep my wishlist in two separate places. I use Microsoft One Note to keep track of 90% of my wishlist. I like it because it's simple and it syncs between all of my devices automatically whenever I make any changes to the list. This is where I keep all my wishlist games for PS4, Xbone, and PC games that aren't available to wishlist on Steam yet. The other 10%, I use the Steam wishlist for, so there is a little maintenance that happens every month or so as games become available on the Steam storefront, or sometimes they get canceled altogether.

The only other component that I think is critical here is to stop buying games if your wishlist is obscenely huge already. I only buy 1 - 2 new games per year now, and honestly, that still really interferes with trying to get rid of my backlog. I'm currently playing Borderlands 3. I'm planning on putting at least 100 hours into it before I move on, which would've been enough time to fully play through at least two of my backlog games satisfactorily. I also put about 80 hours into Days Gone earlier this year. At the end of the day though, I'm happy I'm playing a couple new games each year. Some of these games are freakin amazing, and it's nice to break out of the slump of playing games from 2010 once in a while.

It’s annoying when people complain about multiple games releasing you don’t have to buy it or if u do u don’t have to play it right away it’ll be sitting at Walmart or wherever when your ready..... I can’t wait for the last of us I could care less about what releases around it....

@boobrandonm225: We, and I believe that I speak for the masses on this, understand that we don't have to purchase immediately but many of us enjoy playing these games on day one. Doing so prevents spoilers for one and (I only speak for myself here) feels good to be playing something that many others have not. In some cases it is also the feeling of playing something at the very pinnacle of gaming possibility at that time too.

It seems many of us have already had to pick and choose which warrants our time in early 2020.
