Last Of Us Part 2 Release Date Confirmed For February 2020 On PS4

Ellie's adventure is almost here.

During the company's latest State of Play presentation, Sony announced the release date for The Last of Us Part II via a new trailer, which you can watch above. The game is scheduled to release for PS4 on February 21, 2020. We've also now gotten to go hands-on with Last of Us II, so be sure to check out our extensive preview for an even better look at the game than State of Play provided.

Prior to the presentation, Sony had remained rather quiet on the PS4 exclusive. The company first surprised the world with the reveal of The Last of Us Part II in late 2016, before releasing a new gore-filled trailer for the game in 2017 and then showing off the title's brutal-looking gameplay in another trailer during E3 2018. However, there hasn't been much in regards to the game in 2019. Until today.

Now Playing: The Last Of Us Part 2 Coming In February - GS News Update

Gameplay-wise, The Last of Us Part II looks exceptionally violent--and we love it. Though we've seen sweet moments in the game too, like a grown Ellie kissing her crush and being terrified at the prospect of dancing with her and exploring their connection, The Last of Us Part II is clearly leaning into the worst aspects of what survival might look like in a post-apocalyptic world. We've seen Ellie slit the throat of a man for just being in her way, painfully pulling out an arrow lodged into her shoulder, and sinking an ax into an enemy's skull with a bloody crunch.

The Last of Us Part II looks a bit more action-oriented than its predecessor. Ellie is equipped with a loadout of weapons that's similar to what Joel carried on him in The Last of Us, but Ellie finds herself in more open-ended spaces that present more options in how to dispatch a group of enemies. You can shimmy beneath a vehicle to sneak past a guard, attract enemies to certain locations to ambush them, tumble over obstacles to get behind cover more quickly, and slip between narrow hallways in the environment to escape larger foes.

@liquiddaylight: I'll have to juggle next year between The Last of Us Part 2 in late February, then Final Fantasy VII Remake in March, all while still probably playing some WoW Classic and Divinity OS II (because those games just don't let go of me).

Beat that, lol.

@Berserk8989: Ha Ha. That's a decent schedule. I have Divinity OS II but still haven't played it. I know, I know... I'm going to have to slot that one in soon, but I have to finish GOW 5 first and likely start Death Stranding in November, so I'll have to see.

@liquiddaylight: Poor Divinity OS 2. I've been saying "I'm going to have to slot that one in soon" since it came out. I doubt we're alone in that regard.

@olddadgamer: Add me to that list. And the one for Divinity OS 1. Both are installed and ready to go but I just can't find the time for another RPG just yet.

That's 1 hell of a trailer, from what i saw, i get the feeling that girl Ellie loves will die at some point early in the game and she'll be out for revenge and what not and encounter other unexpected things along the way...

@Viral-venom13: I'm not trolling here, I swear, but that's pretty much a given. The days of disc switching are a relic of yesteryear due to hard drives. Installation discs save space over disc switching as the coding for region fixing and authentication is required if switching each disc.

@alastor529: You will probably be right, sadly. They've already transformed Ellie into a cute and likeable person into a hard-on-the-eyes (and likely hard to be around) butch girl.

This game tell me something that you don't need a very powerful machine like CPU and GPU and so on to see a stunning visuals like we saw in trailer.

Stunning visuals from a stunning developer, I am very excited, interested and impressed by this game and every detail this game reaches it.

What I must say is the level of designing and visuals of the game are something beyond imagination, really nice work naughty dog.

The question is: If those Stunning Visuals are the level of Visuals on PS4. So, what will be the level of Visuals on PS5 ?

@Mo60: The graphics are brilliant. I'm just questioning if Sony are showing the game on an actual PS4 or a powerful PC?

@pmanden: The Last of Us is a PS4 exclusive.

It is not made for PC and can not run on one. This is all captured on a PS4 PRO dev-kit.

This trailer consists of in-game rendered cutscenes, though. So it does not represent actual gameplay.

The gameplay trailer came out a year or so ago, and while the graphics are still terrific, it's not as beautiful as in those cutscenes.

@Mo60: You do need the powerful CPU for the frame rate though. A powerful GPU with lots of texture memory also really boosts visuals both in native pixel count and texture resolution . At best this will be mostly 30 fps on Pro so it matters a great deal for actual frame time , frame rate and millisecond input latency. If none of that matters to you then sure stick to old tech forever but personally once you game on PC at 144 fps plus it's very hard to suddenly go back to 30 fps for any game let alone an action style adventure type game.

I'll just wait for the PS5 update for this game as no use playing it on PS4 Pro.

@deviltaz35: I constantly switch between 60 and 30 FPS games and have zero problems adjusting or playing (I do prefer 60 of course, if possible). Now I don't know for 120 or 144 FPS, but I doubt the returns are worth the hit in visual fidelity and the increased cost of the machine that's powerful enough for that (compared to 60 frames I mean, especially in single player games). The difference between 60 and 144 is certainly less noticeable than the difference between 30 and 60, and as said, I already don't have a problem with switching between the latter two.

That being said, I could never wait for a PS5 release for a game that I really care about just because of a few numbers. Art goes above that superficial technical stuff for me. Most of the aspects (be it the narrative, sound design, visual style and direction, etc.) will all always be the same, no matter where you play. Not to mention I'd have it spoiled ten times over before the next gen version hits.

@GiveMeSomething: Wouldn't you rather play it at 60 fps on PS5 though as that is obvious a patch will be released around launch time of the new console.

@deviltaz35: As long as Sony delivers on its backwards compatibility promise there should be a patch for it but if there's one lesson I learned about Sony this generation it is not to take anything for granted.

I wouldn't put it past them to have "issues delivering B/C" at the start of PS5's lifespan in order to sell PS5 "remasters" of these games. x86 architecture means that it should never be a problem but corporate greed is Sony's forte.

Excited to see "Wattam" get a release date, and that new game from Evolve looks, well, like something Evolve would do. (After "Tetris Effect," I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.)

@santinegrete: You're probably better off waiting until PS5. Sure, it's good to play these games on day one but why spend all that money on a new console when next gen will be out (estimated guess, of course) in under a year after TLoU 2 releases?

@videogameninja: Far from perfect. VII Remake release is very close to this, then there's Cyberpunk in April and possibly Elden Ring in March as well. Who knows, Ghost of Tsushima might join the ranks. Maybe for some a game a month is a doable schedule and even multi-tasking games, but for people like me who spend months on a single game it's not. Also these are all must-plays so it's hard to down-prioritize any of them, and I feel like all of them are great in scale as well so each will take a lot of time.

Personally I'd like to have some releases for the remaining year, since summer it has been dry anyway. I know Death's Stranding but that's looking more and more like a "wait and see" type thing. I am playing The Witcher 3, but I would just prefer to have some releases now rather than all at once next year, schedule-wise.

Sweet mother of Miyamoto’s ghost!

I completely forgot all those games are releasing around that time frame. Your right. Perhaps this wasn’t the best time. Not for them I mean, but rather for us. After all, you know TLOU 2 is gonna’ take precedence over everything else.

@Rikardo91: Again it's mere months before PS5 launch then plus Naughty Dog always delay at least a month or longer from any given release date this far out so why not play it on really decent hardware at at least double the framerate and fidelity? There is no way on this planet Sony won't have a PS5 launch patch ready for this.
