Layoffs at Activision After Guitar Hero, Skylanders Underperform

"We are refocusing to better align with Activision's long-term priorities."

Following the news last week that Guitar Hero Live and Skylanders SuperChargers underperformed, Activision has now confirmed that it's implemented a round of layoffs. It is not immediately clear which office or offices were impacted, but Game Informer reports that Activision's Minneapolis studio was hit.

"As announced on our earnings call, our games for core audiences did extremely well, but the casual audience has not yet emerged on next-gen consoles," an Activision spokesperson told Game Informer. "So we are refocusing to better align with Activision's long-term priorities because, as always, our strategy evolves to keep us ahead of a rapidly changing industry.

"We are working with those impacted by the changes to offer outplacement services and support."

Guitar Hero Live and Skylander SuperChargers "performed weaker than expected," Activision said as part of its latest earnings report. The publisher said the downturn for SuperChargers was largely the result of "greater competition" in the toys-to-life genre, presumably referencing Disney Infinity, Lego Dimensions, and Nintendo's Amiibo. Activision also said SuperChargers and Guitar Hero Live struggled as a result of "the casual audience's shift to mobile devices."

As Game Informer points out, Activision Blizzard is making moves of late. Some of its new areas of focus include the mobile space with the acquisition of Candy Crush developer King, while the company also recently announced plans for movies and TV shows. Additionally, Activision Blizzard has acquired Major League Gaming, furthering its push into the competitive gaming market by creating the "ESPN of Esports."

During the earnings call, Activision also said it does not plan to ship a new Guitar Hero game for the newest generation of consoles. Instead, like Harmonix is doing with Rock Band 4, Activision will continually launch new content for Guitar Hero Live through updates. A new Skylanders game is coming this year, but though no other details on the game were made available when it was announced last week.

In other Activision console gaming news, Modern Warfare creator Infinity Ward will launch a new "innovative" Call of Duty game this year. Additionally, Destiny is getting a "large" expansion this year, with a sequel coming in 2017.

SEE! The ONLY thing these douchebags care about is MONEY.

If something doesn't sell they won't keep making it. If people actually stopped buying their shitty COD rehashes every fucking year we'd have seen the back of it already.

@dexda: it's a corporation that exists to make money. Of course that's what they care about.

@lunchbox2042: Really I thought they were in it to make money AND make good games? Right now they are only managing one of those things.

@dexda: If you're running a company and your number 1 goal is not making money. Then you are destined to fail in business. Also I cannot see any reason why any company would continue making a product, which is not selling well.

@pointingmonkey: It's the number 1 reason drugs and prostitution are still in business while the rest are failing.

@pointingmonkey: Not entirely true. The number one goal in business is to provide good quality products and services (at least it SHOULD be!). As long as you can do that and turn a profit, then it works as well. Unfortunately, you've got the mindset of corporate America. Millions upon millions of small businesses exist because their owners have passion and enjoy what they do. As long as they are turning a profit, then that's all that matters. It doesn't have to be the HIGHEST profit possible. Believe it or not, most business owners are happy to simply "make a living"; it's not about maximizing their profits.

@otterbee: Making a quality product is very important. But if said quality product is failing to make money, even if it is one of the small businesses you mention. They are left with two choices, quit making the product or continue losing money on it and end up filing for bankruptcy.

I would love to make Guitars for a living. I have the skills, the knowhow, most of the tools and most importantly the passion for it. If I thought I could make it, to where I could make a comfortable living. I don't want a mansion, swimming pools, fast cars etc., I would be more than happy to just have a enough that I could live comfortably. I would most definitely be doing it. But when I factor in the amount of man hours it would take to handcraft a guitar, along with materials. It puts me in a position where I would either have to sell the guitars for the same price as Gibson or Fender, who have brand recognition. Or make a loss on each guitar. Which wouldn't make sense from a business standpoint, hence why making guitars will always remain a hobby for me.

@pointingmonkey: You just glazed over what I said, and GirlUSoCrazy just reinforced my point. I stated it clearly, "As long as they are turning a profit" Of course your example doesn't work, because you're not turning a profit. BUT...if you could find a way to turn a profit, then why wouldn't you do what your passion is and make guitars for a living? There are a number of business owners that I know of that simply look at things as, "Hey, I'm enjoying what I do...and I'm able to turn a profit doing it; BONUS!" But, they also aren't beholden to shareholders or the public to dictate/drive what they do...probably because if they were, they wouldn't be doing it. Corporate America is the culprit here. Did they say that Skylanders and Guitar Hero aren't turning a profit?? Not at all. They only said that they're not performing as well as expected. But, they feel they can turn MORE profit elsewhere. So, they decide to lay people off...and buy King, thinking that's going to be the goose that lays the golden egg. Not surprisingly, they'll probably find that it turns out to be a dud. For multiple reasons; and, once again, it'll simply impact their workforce (employees), while the shareholders continue getting phat dividends, because that where their only focus is. Sadly.

@otterbee: I didn't glaze over what you said. I enforced that no matter what the company, the number one goal of the company is to make money. It doesn't matter whether they are small family owned business or a corporation. They exist for the sole purpose of making profit.

At no point did I say that Activision were correct to put emphasis on maximum profits. But they are doing what any business would do. They saw something which wasn't making them money, so they cut it loose.

@pointingmonkey: Sure you have to make ends meet. But when making money means you have to make garbage products then that is just as bad.

The sad thing is IF Activision (and EA/Ubisoft) actually put some pride in their work and didn't just churn them out with the least amount of effort possible they would have everyone's money AND their respect at the same time.

Activision have produced nothing but garbage for the last three or more years. Yet people STILL keep funding them. It is basically like Activision get by because people have gotten into the HABIT of buying their games each year. Not because they like them it is because they don't even think twice about it. Activision churn out COD, EA churn out FIFA and sports games, Ubisoft churn out Assassin's Creed.

If people actually used their brains instead of being mindless slaves gaming and the entertainment industry in general would be a better place. It wouldn't just be full of the same old shitty COD and tired super hero movies.

Deadpool has been a massive success right because it is different and it changes the rules. I bet you ANYTHING over the next few years we will see more and more of those R rated super hero movies and before you know it we'll be sick of them again.

Money has started to become more important than creativity.

@dexda: "But when making money means you have to make garbage products then that is just as bad."

So, just to clarify, the products that sell well are garbage, and games like Guitar Hero Live and Skylanders Superchargers that people don't buy are the ones they should keep making?

@linusa: No. They should make something that is good and which will sell. You know like they used to.

Right now they are nothing but the carbon copy COD pushers. Which means that in terms of the gaming industry and art and innovation and creativity they are NOTHING.

@linusa: Of course. Bad games being removed and new games being introduced is how EVOLUTION works.

The problem is Activision don't contribute anything NEW but they are quick to remove anything that isn't profitable. Which leaves us with.......basically just COD.

Made even worse by the fact that brainless idiots CONTINUE to buy their shit.

In the past publishers like Activision were responsible for the massive titles Crash Bandicoot, Final Fantasy (Square), Resident Evil (Capcom), Metal Gear Solid (Konami).

NOW they are so money obsessed that instead of selling GOOD products and making profit from that, they are stripping out features and innovation in order to reduce production costs. These big producers have reached critical mass. They can't innovate any more because that is costly. They can't spend too much in development because then they'd need to sell 6 billion copies just to break even.

So what we are left with is cookie cutter crap like COD and Assassin's Creed.

I just wish more people would realise this and make a stand against their shit. Take their money and these fuckers will panic like mad men!
