Lich King claims 2.8M souls in 24 hours

Second World of Warcraft expansion officially fastest-selling PC title of all time following beyond-brisk day-one sales.

As only the second expansion to an 11 million-player massively multiplayer game, there was little doubt that World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King would sell well. Today, developer-publisher Blizzard Entertainment told the world exactly how well, announcing the add-on had sold a staggering 2.8 million copies in its first 24 hours on the market. GameStop reported that the expansion is already their top-selling PC title of 2008. Although currency fluctuations and discounts prevent an accurate estimation of the expansion's exact take, 2.8 million units at the US price point of $39.99 stacks up to nearly $108 million.

The last known whereabouts of many WOW players.
The last known whereabouts of many WOW players.

Wrath of the Lich King's launch was heralded by 15,000 midnight launch events worldwide. Whether they were in the US, UK, or Australia, all events were mobbed by fans whipped into a frenzy by a steady drumbeat of hype. The fact that it has been nearly two years since the first WOW expansion, The Burning Crusade, also played a large part. That game, too, shattered records when it sold 2.4 million copies in the 24 hours after its launch on January 17, 2007, back when WOW only had 8 million subscribers.

World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King will raise the level cap to 80 and will add new abilities and talents to all classes. It also introduces the Death Knight hero class and a new profession--inscription--that will let players permanently enhance spells and abilities. The expansion also adds new character-customization options, as well as a massive new realm, Northrend. For more details on the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage, and check back soon for a full review.

WOW You would think it would of sold more, since they have over 12 million subscribers, on the first day. I played WOW for 4 years and had enough. Maybe more will follow and stick with their Xbox 360 and PS3. I am.

Haha, I love how all the people saying people have lost their souls to WoW like obsessives are also the same people playing multiplayer FPSs on Xbox live day in and day out;) All of us have our own obsessions, whether it be videogames, or any other form of entertainment.

Having a life = enjoying every minute of it and being happy all the time. If people who play WoW alot play it because they enjoy it and not because of some obsessive compulsive addiction, then they have a life. Anyways, great xpac, definitely added alot of fun new things to explore, I've played a ton and still have barely scratched the surface. :) Although the server queues are annoying - having to wait 2 hours to log on sometimes is a pain.

Played WoW for 3 years and quit like 3 months before Lich King. I am sure it is very fun and all but I won't go back just cuz I love having a life now. It is kinda a huge wake-up call that first week that you quit playing and call up your friends and they seriously say, "Holy crap.. I thought you died." Anyways good riddance WoW and as tempting as it may be to play again... and it is. I won't :-P

I am one of those 2.8 million souls... I haven't played since I first hit 70 with the last expansion. Regardless of what people say... WoW is a great game. There's a line though between WoW as a game and WoW as a lifestyle. I have one character... I will level him to 80... play through a few of the raids then quit again.

Imagine the day, blizzard creates a new IP. They've been working a long time off of Diablo, Starcraft, Warcraft. I'd like to see something new. A new genre, a new universe to explore. They've tackled high fantasy, Space-marine sci-fi, and D&D styled fantasy. I can't wait to see if they come up with something new.

Yeah the graphics engine has been updated with real time shadows. But you need a really high end PC to run it. I mean it casts shadows on everything. Due to the scale of the areas in the game, this is why you get really bad slowdown.

well done to blizzard for taking 2.8 million muggs money..lol...all facebook or myspace designer's have to do is create a similar game with better graphics..(that would'nt be hard)....and you'd get a 50million or more people playing it. or even more so when microsoft or sony get on the bandwagon..but hey their too busy collecting millions off much better solid produced games...besides if you aint even pass level 70 there's no point in even buying it....would be good if they created an expansion pack that takes into consideration all its player's...but hey until the next rip-off installment

even though WOW is doing great, I hope Blizzard doesn't make a WOW2, because there are so many games that fans want you to make, of course, if you make WOW2, it's probably going to be the biggest game ever. But then, Blizzard will no longer be Blizzard. I'm eager to see what the new IP game has to offer.

I'm a little worried that the stifling competition from WoW is flooding the PC games market and bringing down profitability for other developers and publishers... You know, because practically EVERYONE that games on the PC has a WoW account.

@ilikemuffins I played WoW for about 2 or 3 months, and it is highly addictive. The only reason why i quite playing was because I don't fancy the sort of gameplay provided by most MMOs. I would rather have full control of when and how my character attacks instead of pressing attack once and he does that until you tell him to stop like the gameplay that Phatansy Star Universe provides. But all-in-all in you enjoy that gameplay there is nothing better.

I'm not gonna bad mouth WoW, but I've heard it's addicting as crack. I'd like to try it out one day but I don't think it will stick with me. FPS and TPS are more my types of games. I hate RTS and RPGs. Congrats to Blizz. anyway for selling so many games.

If you lose friends or other things to this game, then maybe they were that important to you to begin with. Ive been playing on and off since release, and I havent lost any friends, I have a steady realtionship, and i get the bills paid. Sure its an addictive game, but if you cant mange your time, then maybe you shouldnt play it.
