Madden NFL 25 sales cross 1 million units

First-week sales for EA Sports' gridiron game down year-over-year, though game is also coming to Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Madden NFL 25 sold more than 1 million units during its first week at retail and was the top-selling game of August overall in North America, Electronic Arts has announced.

Gamers have played nearly 6 million hours of Madden NFL 25 since launch. A Seahawks vs. 49ers matchup was three times more popular than any other contest during the first week, EA said.

Madden NFL 25's Ultimate Team has gotten off to a quick start, EA said, noting players have opened more than 3.3 million packs, the most in any single week since Ultimate Team was introduced in Madden NFL 10.

In addition, Saturday, August 28, marked the highest day for net revenue in Madden Ultimate Team history, EA said.

Madden NFL 25's sales of 1 million units is down from 1.65 million for last year's Madden NFL 13, but the full picture won't come into focus until later. The game will be released on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 as launch titles for the next-generation platforms in November.

Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia said first-week sales of Madden NFL 25, though down year-over-year, are in line with the company's guidance. He noted that the $10 upgrade offer from current- to next-generation versions of the game will also boost sales.

"In any case, we think the true picture of EA's overall sports business this year won't emerge until the arrival of the next-gen version of its games this holiday," Bhatia said.

Robert W. Baird analyst Colin Sebastian echoed Bhatia's comments, saying the "softness" in sales of Madden NFL 25 reflects the nature of the console transition.

@XbotSlayer221 And you know what, those real sucky football teams that can't even win half their games...yeah, they're still making money, too. Even when they can't fill half their stadium 8 days a year.

@XbotSlayer221 @Tigerbite2 Perhaps he is saying that they will continue to be churned out because they cost so little, even if the audience drastically shrunk.

I like the new Owner Mode it is kind of interesting, I played NFL Head Coach and may be one of the only people who enjoyed it but I am having a blast with Owner Mode.

@jrcast84

i've actually been looking for head coach everytime i'm at a store, but, haven't found it yet.

i think a well-developed rts would be a great alternative to the actual sports games i will never buy.

@udubdawgz @jrcast84 Where you looking for it for a console? they also have it for PC. I like the whole idea of just managing the team and getting the best players while managing a budget.

It just goes to show how many people just like to keep their lives in consistent repetition. Playing Madden each year is like watching non-stop reruns of your favorite show, with only commercials that differentiate the redundancy.

@o016945 Hmmm I don't play sports games...but the same can be said about most franchises. COD, Battlefield, God of War, Forza, GTA, GT, FIFA, Halo, Mortal Kombat, Tekken, Resident Evil etc etc etc etc....very similar games...some tweaks...but same shit year after year. It's very simple if you don't like it don't buy it. :) Do whatever it is you do that is so...varied and amazingly different every day...

@o016945

Let me guess... you still play Madden 10? ha-ha

People's lives are not defined by Madden. We buy Madden every year because we love football. Madden 25 is a lot different than Madden 13
