Magic gathering on Xbox Live, PC

Wizards of the Coast confirms two new titles based on its collectible card game currently in development.

Wizards of the Coast is summoning a pair of new digital adaptations of its long-standing Magic: The Gathering collectible card game brand. The Hasbro subsidiary today announced that it would be bringing games based on the franchise to Xbox Live Arcade and the PC.

Details were virtually nonexistent, but one of the games is being developed by Stainless Games and will appear on Live Arcade and the PC. The UK-based Stainless was the studio behind the controversial Carmageddon, but has more recently trafficked in lighter fare, such as Atari Classic on the PlayStation Portable and the Xbox Live Arcade versions of Crystal Quest, Tempest, and Missile Command.

The other Magic project will be made for the PC and Mac, with Mind Control Software set to develop. The California-based studio is known for its PlayStation Portable strategy game Field Commander, as well as the downloadable PC casual strategy game Osiris.

I've been hankering for some Magic action for a while now but I don't play and nobody I know plays anymore... I'd definitely pick it up on either platform.

I'd be hoping for a game with at least some single player elements, like the 1997 version. That has a terrific tournament feature, even with sealed decks. A multiplayer element is inevitable, but it shouldn't be the only option.

I hope people do not have to pay ridiculous fees to purchase "virtual cards" online.

Yeah battlegrounds sucked. Ether-something game was really good and well done, even though it failed :/. We REALLY need details about the gameplay..

I've gone through my Magic phase. It was fun while it lasted, but I actually cannot see myself playing again. Good luck for all who will enjoy it though.

I will be interested in seeing this. Never played Magic but got into SpellFire instead (like the original art and D&D aspect) so this will be very tempting.

If this wasn't coming for XBL, I don't think it would do as good as I think it will, because I know I'm definetely getting this.

I like trading card games better on a video game system than in real life for two reasons: 1. Its cheaper 2. I end up playing more than I would with real cards So this is good news for me.

Played MTG Online (cards only, not the action) and offline versions for a long time and so far the PC adaptation of kinda-action, kinda card-collecting games were horrible. Not sure what can bring back trust in such possibilities.

Xbox Live could definitely use some more board/card games. I have a blast playing Settlers of Catan, although finding people to play with is a problem (and the fact that about half the players will leave before the game ends if they are losing). I don't know much about Magic, but considering Wizards of the Coasts makes most of its sales for that game in selling cards, my bet is the digital version won't be any different (i.e. You will keep needing to fork over money to buy new cards.)

well, this will be interesting to try, some friends got me hooked on the card game years ago, though I'm glad I always got to play with their cards 'cause I sure as hell wasn't going to put the money down for them; though, paying $5 or $10 for the XBLA might sound worth it... unless you have to buy those booster packs or whatever they're called on XBL for like several dollars, every so often (jeez, I bet people would do that too)

can they hurry up with an MMORPG that lets players do the same things as most in novel/storyline planeswalkers? take them to all the planes... what about a game that just follows Urzas life? something cool like that and i'd bother to play :P

I was way in to magic one summer, but got bored of it after a few months. A game might be good if they manage to make it like the card game.

I don't like WotC... they murdered my Star Wars CCG, buying the rights and making the inferior Star Wars TCG... they should have stuck with add-ons of the original Decipher game (and not the 'jedi' series... just the original CCG) Where we played, magic was for people who couldn't understand SWCCG's rules (which where many, especially in the damage department).

Bleh, gimme"The Eye of Judgment" anytime, helluva lot easier to pick up and while not as deep as MTG, it has some serious depth to it.

@nemes MTG is not simple. Easy to understand...depends on the person. I love the game been playing since The Dark came out. I have seen the rules grow over the years, and many people completely fail to grasp the game. If they printed all the rules with explanations, then it would be an encyclopedia.

I kinda like MTG (the actual card game) it's simple and easy to understand, and the amount of combos you can make are unlimited, the only thing sucks about the game is that you can only have 4 identical creatures and spells in one deck. It's been so long since I've played the game.

Actually, the game MCS made was Oasis, not Osiris. And if you haven't played it and are 1) a fan of strategy games and 2) a fan of quick, play-it-during-your-lunch-break-titles, you're really doing yourself a disservice. It's easily one of the best indie games I've ever played.

I've always thought it would be cool to have an action RPG released every year based on the latest set (as they usually each have their own world and flavour) , but the time differences between the card development and game development would probably make that impossible. I think an action RPG is probably the most logical option for a spin-off game. Progress from a nothing character to a Planeswalker.

Hmmm....I do hope the XBLA version is cool...that it to some extent embraces the concept of the card game. Not sure about that though as the statement on the MTG website says that this is an opportunity to tell "fantasy stories" beyond the card game. As for why now? What do you mean now? There have been several games in the past and the online version of the game has being going for some time, and still appears to be going strong. I can't afford it to really play it, since it is priced similarly to the actual card game...but the idea is cool. As for the size limit on XBLA games, the first offering could just have a few sets, while the inevitable "add-on packs" can make the game larger. I mean we are talking about Wizards of the Coast - the masters of the addictive micro-transactions themselves.

I highly doubt the xbla version will be a card game, considering the 150mb size cap of arcade games. The developers would probably have a very hard time cramming HD visuals of each card and sound/music into such a tight package, not to mention the complex AI needed for single-player.
