Man Quits Job to Play Pokemon Go Full-Time

"I wanted to have an adventure."

The crazy Pokemon Go stories just keep coming. Today's item is news that a 24-year-old man from New Zealand has quit his job to play the monster-catching game full-time.

The man, Tom Currie, told The Guardian that he quit his job in Auckland last week to begin a two-month trip across New Zealand in an attempt to catch 'em all. Literally. His goal is to catch all 151 Pokemon in the game.

No Caption Provided

Currie booked 20 bus trips and has already visited six towns on the South Island. He says he caught Pokemon everywhere he stopped and already has 90 of the game's 151 Pokemon.

"I wanted to have an adventure," Currie said. "I have been working for six years and I was desperate for a break. And Pokemon gave me the chance to live that dream."

On at least one occasion, Currie stayed up until 3 AM on his Poke-hunt. He's also staying in shape, as every day he walks "miles and miles."

Currie is saving money by traveling frugally; he sleeps on friend's couches or in backpacker dorms. Go to The Guardian to get the full story.

Pokemon Go is a huge hit. Released last week, the free-to-play title is now the most popular mobile game in United States history. On the business side, its release has helped Nintendo shares rise 86 percent, boosting the company's market value by $17 billion.

There have also been some scary stories around Pokemon Go. Just this week, a 15-year-old was hit by a car after playing the game, while a man was stabbed while searching for Pokemon. Additionally, two men fell off an oceanside cliff on their hunt for creatures and a man crashed his car into a tree while reportedly playing the game behind the wheel. Also, a Pokemon Go player in New Hampshire found a dead body in a brook while playing the game this week.

Insane!

Played this game for maybe 1 minute, not fun at all. Last good Pokemon game was probably Silver/Gold version.

This Pokemon Go epidemic is spreading quickly all over the world.

I think people are missing the larger point. The man clearly was not happy with his job. He probably wanted to leave anyway, and finally found the motivation to quit when he started playing the game. And it's not like he's JUST playing the game. The dude is travelling the entirety of New Zealand. Saying he's JUST playing Pokemon would be like saying someone is JUST travelling the entirety of the U.S. to play the game. It's impressive that he would quit his job and travel that much. If it brings him joy, then so be it. Seriously, I don't get the naysayers. I could understand if it was something like WoW, with someone staying in all the time and ignoring their necessities to play. But at least this one's having a lot of positive benefits. Yes, some negatives too, but I think the good far outweighs the bad.

@Pierce_Sparrow: if he's not happy at this job. More power to him I think. Lol he's probably better off leaving that job anyway.

This is impossible lol. Did he not research first? The legendary birds, Mewtwo, and Mew are not programmed to spawn. They're for events only. Ditto isn't programmed to spawn either. So it's impossible to catch them all.

So many cowards in the comments section cuckolded by their paycheck and without the courage to do something bold that will truly make them happy.

@Naylord: I'm going to guess you're single, no kids, and don't have a lot of experience with bills. It's not cowardly to do what has to be done to make a living and support your family.

@Naylord: Not everyone is like this guy in the article. Some of us have a mortgage to pay, as well as every day bills which stack up to shitloads by the end of the year.

How about you think before you speak next time.

I don't get it. I tried playing this game, found it to be stupid. Uninstalled, good riddance. Don't get me wrong, I liked Pokemon back in the 90s when I was in MIDDLE SCHOOL.... Don't tell me the next fad is the resurgence of Pogs?

@lion2447: A six year grind is a six year grind. If you're not happy with your job, that can really wear you down. It doesn't matter what kind of job it is either. I have friends that love working in restaurants and others that full out regret becoming lawyers. We all are different in so many ways, and how we deal with our jobs can vary greatly.

This generation is so selfish and lazy. Kid, I WANT work. You had a job, and gave it up for a stupid kids game.

Can't wait to hear of your adventures on SKID ROW. :P

Well, it's a sense of freedom he's experiencing right now. I wish I could just give up a job I was invested in and run off to play games. And well, if he didn't like his current job, taking a couple months off and actually SEEING the country regardless if your motivation is to capture Pokemon is a great way to reset. I'm sure he'll find another job when he's ready to work again.

He should start up his own business on the go. Stock up on portable chargers and cables. Then sell them to players that don't have one but ran out of juice. When their battery dies, shout out you see a shiny Pokemon. Those chargers would sell well!

What I want to know is how much time it'll take, and for how long he'll manage. Because if he's jobless, he won't be able to pay his bills. No bills, no internet. No internet, no Pokémon GO. No Pokémon GO, no "Gotta catch em all". No Gotta catch em all, no goal. No goal, no life. No life, means death!

Wow. I can be deep sometimes...!

To be fair, playing Pokemon Go is just something he's doing on the side while his real goal is to throw a ring into a volcano.

This is what a bored, lost, fool looks like. The guy is completely emasculated -- keep your job, find a good woman, raise a family, and play video games here and there for as a temporary escape.

@Rambolike: not everyone wants to live the cliche of "find a good woman, raise a family".. that might be all you're here for, but not him, others want to live life.

@SolidSnakeJT: He is right though it's a huge cliche and not one I will follow. However as much as I love pokemon it's not something to quit your job over or be out at ungodly hours of night. I hope this man can piece his life together after his little break.

And in two months, by the time he "catches them all" no one will care about Pokémon Go anymore, and he'll have a time getting a new job when they find out why he quit his last one. You live in New Zealand and it took Pokémon to inspire you to adventure?? Live for happiness, but don't be a schmuck doing so.

@RedWave247: OVER 8000!!!!! Also must be male, because females can't be men.

I am saying this because "Good lord, how old must someone be to be considered a man in your eyes?" The term "someone" includes both males and females, and by saying this, you indirectly say females can be men! THIS! IS! UNACCEPTABLE IN TODAY'S STANDARDS! AND I KNOW WHAT I AM SAYING CAUSE I AM A SPACE CHICKEN COVERED IN DELICIOUS SOY SAUCE!
