Mario Kart 8 Is Getting 48 DLC Courses By End Of 2023

Nintendo announces a very ambitious DLC plan for Mario Kart 8 that includes remastered courses from past games.

Nintendo has announced a "Booster Course Pass" for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe that will add 48 additional DLC courses to the popular racing game by the end of 2023. The first wave of courses arrives March 18. The best part is that if you have the recently released Ninetndo Switch Online + Expansion Pass bundle, you won't have to pay an extra cent to get any of them. Oh yeah, Mario time.

The DLC will include remastered courses from earlier games. Eight courses will be released across six waves, for a total of 48 courses in all. Some of the courses confirmed so far include Coconut Mall from Mario Kart Wii, Choco Mountain for Mario Kart 64, and Tokyo Blur from Mario Kart Tour. These will be available in the first wave, and they can be played locally and online.

Now Playing: Mario Kart 8 Remastered Courses DLC Trailer | Nintendo Direct February 2022

The Booster Course Pass costs $25 on its own. It's also included with the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pass at no extra cost. Individual waves of courses cannot be purchased alone.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the Switch's best-selling game of all time, with more than 43 million units sold, so it makes sense that Nintendo wants to keep the party going like this with additional DLC.

I want something like this, but for Mario Party. Mario Party Superstars is great, and the best Mario Party in many years imo, taking the series back to the superior style of the old games, but the fact that they only gave us 5 stages, and no DLC, is a crime...I want remakes of all the old stages from the first 7 games, not just 5 of them...

Thanks, I think. MK8, is just MK8 (WiiU version) with all the DLCs made(tracks and drivers) for the Switch.

To be honest with you, this is joke from Nintendo...

This type of thing is expected from Nintendo, instead of creating a new game, let's just charge more for the current game with DLC...

@DavidinCT: What would a new Mario Kart bring to the table? they're all pretty much the same. They really only need new tracks or characters.

@rolento25: They could add significant cosmetic cart customization options disconnected from the statistical advantages.

Its nice to have all these tracks, but the game is like 8 years old now, already had a deluxe version, already added a few dlc's, so why not MK 9? Weird.

@soulcrusher777: But mk9 will print money regardless of when it releases. I believe mk8 sold an additional 5 million copies just last year.

In nintendos eyes, they are probably seeing the amount of interest die down for mk8 (sounds weird I know since i just mentioned they sold 5 mil last year). So now they easy mode drip feed all this content for two years, sell it to 15 million players probably, then release mk9 in 2025 and do it all over again.

@chaosemerald: Pretty much. Better to hold onto the big 9 until the next system comes out. I imagine a super deluxe version of 8 would also sell gangbusters.

Clever idea from Nintnedo there, no new game but regular DLC for the old game costing more than a new one

approx £2 a track isn't too bad when you view it this way.

Viewed from the perspective of £19 ($25) per pack its steep for all 8 at that price

@itchyflop: That's what i thought, but actually it's $25 for all 48 tracks. Which makes it a much better deal.

@Thanatos2k: do you even really need mk9 when they are adding 48 courses to 8? What else are you hoping 9 would have that this dlc isn't including?

How about 48 new courses instead of 48 we've already had?

@blaznwiipspman1: But, if you had a Nintendo WiiU before the switch, you would know MK8d is just MK8 with all the DLCs (extra tracks and players).

So you never really got a NEW Mario Kart on the Switch, just a repackaged version.

The Wii U sold 13.6 million consoles. "Mario Kart 8" on the Wii U sold a shade under 8.5 million copies.

The Switch has moved 103.5 million consoles so far. "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe" has sold 43.4 million copies.

It's not a direct "one to one" comparison due to people buying multiple consoles, etc., but it's very safe to say that for the vast, vast, vast majority of Switch owners, "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe" is a new Mario Kart.

@zmanbarzel:Well, if they sold it with extra tracks or something... maybe. I owned a WiiU and I had Mario Kart 8, I also picked up all the DLC addons...

So if you were a true Nintendo fan, you got a WiiU and odds are you own MK8 for the WiiU. You would know they are the exact same game with just the addon DLCs on the Switch. NOTHING MORE.

I paid $60 for game that I already had... I personally feel kind of ripped off. If anything I should get the NEW tracks for free but, will Nintendo anything, no...

They SHOULD of made a NEW Mario Kart for the Switch.... NOT a repackaged one.

@DavidinCT: "True fans" and $5 will get you a pretty good cup of coffee. True fans really don't matter, as shown by the Switch's success and Wii U's failure, when there are millions upon millions of people who don't really feel like falling on a sword for a multibillion-dollar company.

@blaznwiipspman1: yea if they made 9 they would only ruin it with some gimmick intended to "separate" the game from mk8. like random engine breaks. mk8 is pretty much perfect so why make a new one

tracks are 80% of a driving game so they are doing what matters.

on the other hand after spending 25 bucks extra i really hope this isnt like "lets release some tracks to squeeze money and then 6 months later release mk9 and split playerbase and stuff"

@ghostspartan: you can go back in time to SNES days, Nintendo only releases ONE mario kart per generation. Mario kart 8 was the only exception to the rule, because the wii u sold so poorly that nintendo extended it for 2 generations.

Don't expect a new switch until 2024, even 2025. That's when we will have mk9.

@blaznwiipspman1: Your comment is one of the better ones here. The fact that they are extending this DLC through 2023 already lets you know we're not getting a MK9 until 2024 at least. For all of these tracks though, this is a steal for $25. I never played all of those Mario Kart games and I still play MK8 when friends are over. Now we'll have a ton of new tracks to play on.

@LoveBird-: They are NOT new tracks, they are old tracks re-mastered. So if you have been playing MK from the SNES like I have and every version, I am just getting tracks that look pretty.

Nothing NEW. That is what we were all hoping for...

@DavidinCT: You missed the context of my post. MY friends and I, will have a ton of new tracks to play on. Everyone hasn't been playing MK from SNES, so for some people, this is all new.

What you get now is the ability to play on some of your favorite tracks that were not in MK8 deluxe (until now).

We all have to wait for MK9 though. This game is 7 years old, right? We can survive another 2 years.

@LoveBird-: besides even if youve played snes and n64, those games barely represent tracks anything like the more modern games do. and mario kart tour gameplay just sucks so thats different too.

i do feel that double dash and so on tracks can be a bit reduntant but still its nice to have them all in one.
