Mario Kart 8 Is Getting 48 DLC Courses By End Of 2023

Nintendo announces a very ambitious DLC plan for Mario Kart 8 that includes remastered courses from past games.

Nintendo has announced a "Booster Course Pass" for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe that will add 48 additional DLC courses to the popular racing game by the end of 2023. The first wave of courses arrives March 18. The best part is that if you have the recently released Ninetndo Switch Online + Expansion Pass bundle, you won't have to pay an extra cent to get any of them. Oh yeah, Mario time.

The DLC will include remastered courses from earlier games. Eight courses will be released across six waves, for a total of 48 courses in all. Some of the courses confirmed so far include Coconut Mall from Mario Kart Wii, Choco Mountain for Mario Kart 64, and Tokyo Blur from Mario Kart Tour. These will be available in the first wave, and they can be played locally and online.

Now Playing: Mario Kart 8 Remastered Courses DLC Trailer | Nintendo Direct February 2022

The Booster Course Pass costs $25 on its own. It's also included with the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pass at no extra cost. Individual waves of courses cannot be purchased alone.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the Switch's best-selling game of all time, with more than 43 million units sold, so it makes sense that Nintendo wants to keep the party going like this with additional DLC.

@blaznwiipspman1: As you said real adults have real jobs, but not for some altruistic motives like "contributing to the economy" but because they have bills to pay. Real adults considere how to spend 25 hard earned dollars, will I spend 25 bucks on 2, maybe 3 full games + DLCs on a Steam sale?, or in just ONE DLC publish by a company that takes so much and gives so little. My friend: this is's not a deal, it's a steal.

@blaznwiipspman1: As said, you didn't get a NEW MK with the MK8, you just a repackaged MK7 version with all the DLCs...

Not a good deal as you just got the same game and paid $60 for it...

@DavidinCT: they release a mario kart every 6 years, but mk8 was special because wii u flopped so bad. For the majority of people mk8 came out in 2017, so it's 5 years old. I owned a wii u and mk8, but nobody else did. Even for me, I'm fine with nintendo re releasing the game. I mean even if they made a mk9, how would it be better? The current one is already fantastic. Nintendo has the right idea by releasing dlc. Since they are planning on extending the switch lifespan until 2024 or even 2025, dlc instead of a new game makes most sense. And this is almost a new game...freaking 48 tracks. Even the base game doesn't have as much.

You will get mk9 official release when the switch 2 launches in 2025. Until then chill out.

@blaznwiipspman1: So just "screw over the fans?" Right? The fans were the ones that had a Wii U and MK8. Typical Nintendo bs propagating fanboy.

@treechopper88:Exactly. I paid $60+ DLC ($25ish)on the WiiU, and did it again on the Switch for the same exact game, now they want me to pay another $25 to get tracks I should of gotten on the release on the Switch ?

My Switch is one of the hackable ones, I think for these maps, I'll be going down this road with it... It is nice to own the games (as I don't buy much digital), and I rip them to drive to play with out the carts but, I do own every game I play. This might be the only acceptation.

Still have my WiiU, in fact I still have every one of my Nintendo consoles from the NES....

I am a fan but, not a fanboy... like some others here...

@treechopper88: I didn't know people were salty about the wii u and mk8 still. Buddy, I was one of few, one of the minority that bought a wii u AND mk8. I sold the console a long time ago and got some of my money back. Then bought a switch with it and mk8. But the thing is, I didn't have the DLC of the wii u mk8, so a lot of the game was actually new to me when I rebought it on the switch. And heck, the game looked a lot nicer too. It was almost like a new game to me.

@blaznwiipspman1: if it’s 25$ for 8 maps. Some even remastered. The amount of development does not come close to validate this price(compared to regular game dev). If this is the price. That means that the entire 48 maps are “worth” like developing a regular AAA game twice. It’s not even close, you can choose to support them but this is price gauging.

If I misunderstood and it’s 25$ for all then it’s a great deal.

@Willy105: 25 bucks for a 5 years old game that by the time the last wave will came out it's going to be 6 years old... that's an insult. 5 dollars it's and ok price for something that Nintendo should gift for free.

@Willy105: with respect its more content from OLD games, great for younger games who haven't played the older tracks on the older systems, non Nintnedo players who have just joined the "party" or newbies to the console market.

Its a steep price imo

@itchyflop: 50c a track is a steep price? Man you would hate to see my grocery bill.

It's not like they just straight up dumped the courses in MK8 without any work being done to them.

@bu1ld0g:

:HEY

yeah my bad my interpretation of the price was wrong, i didn't realise the price was for everything not per "pack".

Its actually a pretty sweet deal.

More Mario Kart cannot be a bad thing, even if they're remastered tracks.

@skyx26: Also free to the people who have NO+, so that's a nice addition.

Pirated to hell though? I don't think so. How many people do you think own hackable Switches?

@bu1ld0g: Hackable Switches ? Sure most early owners have one, and even for the first year or 2, there is a LOT of them out there and not too hard to find if you wanted one.

I didn't think mine was when I got new like 2-3 years ago and guess what, it is....

There are seral numbers around that you can tell of your system is hackable...

@DavidinCT: Hackable Switches ? Sure most early owners have one

Yep, my daughter has one.

So my point was there are 103 million Switches sold to date, how many of those have the chipset that allows you to access RCM?

That said, I have no idea how commonplace Switch hardware mods are. They don't seems to be a thing where I live anyway. Plus as was mentioned elsewhere, what's the point if you can't play online with these tracks?

It's also really sad that skyx26 feels $25US is expensive and justification for theft.

@bu1ld0g: It's free because Nintendo already steal money from fanboys that pay for online multiplayer / services. That should never be charged for unless you sold a game with online multiplayer in mind like WoW, and even so there should be a free approch like Path of Exile and WarFrame.

"How many people do you think own hackable Switches?"

More than you think. A v1 (Erista) it's always been looking for and beign sold for no less than 350 dollars in mint condition, a v2 (Mariko) and v3 (OLED) can always be chipped (but it's also true that an OLED is hard and expensive as hell to chip). I think that 6 of every 10 Switches nowdays are hacked.

"Pirated to hell though? I don't think so"

Hell yeah, if you have a decent computer you can emulate the Switch, so yes, it will be downloaded and play for free.

@P00DGE: Yea, your right, maybe 1 or 2 out of 10 are hacked but, 6 out 10 on the market are hackable. Just not everyone is interested in doing it.

That is more like that.

@DavidinCT: I'd wager that less than 1% of the consumers that own a Switch even know the Switch can be hacked, much less know how. The overwhelming majority of Switches sold have gone to children, moms, and average joes. Not tech-savvy types that would hack it and begin pirating things.

@P00DGE: I'd say more than that... When the Switch was first hacked. It made major news, ABC, NBC all carried it on the air. Never mind if you even moderately keep up on on tech news, it's been all over the place for years now.

No arguments of the young kids or parents but, when the teens get into it, and want to play a game they can't afford, it happens a lot, I have heard of a lot of people doing it. With some research, all you need to know is your serial number and sites list them, if your under XX, you can, if your over XX you can't...

I do it, NOT to pirate, I buy all my games physical, and I rip them all to the SD card so I don't need to carry the tiny carts around to play. 95% of the time, I play multi player in the home, or over wi-fi, so having a hacked Switch does not matter.

@DavidinCT: I think it is still very low, even among teens. I work with teens (I am a teacher) and I would say 80% of them wouldn't be able to do this. Well over half of them barely know how to search things up in google. Contrary to popular belief, teens today are not very tech savvy. They are good with smart phones, but smart phones are also built to cater a very specific experience that requires little effort.

@skyx26:

Jesus, it's $25USD. Skip your Mountain Dew & Doritos for the month and you've got the money already.

NO+ isn't exactly expensive. Sure it's pay walling online which is bullshit imo, but for the access to NES/SNES/N64/Genesis games it's worth it for me. But if $1 a week is too expensive for you, you should probably find a new hobby.

I think that 6 of every 10 Switches nowdays are hacked.

Got a source for that imaginary number?

Hell yeah, if you have a decent computer you can emulate the Switch, so yes, it will be downloaded and play for free.

And the majority of those people wouldn't have been buying it anyway.

Yes, of course DLCs don't make themself, I understand that there are devs and there are publishing costs, but then again, are you telling me that Nintendo is poorer that other developers (even indie devs) that publish new content for their games FOR FREE???

@bu1ld0g: those who pirate can't even play the games online. Half the charm of the game is having online features and functionalities. Who the heck wants to play Mario kart by yourself. I want to play against my brother and his wife when they live an hour away.

@blaznwiipspman1: Yeah. My daughter has a 1st gen Switch and I have an OLED. Don't have any plans to hack either as we both use them online and wouldn't want to risk the accounts/hardware.

I know there are safe workarounds, but nothing is 100% guaranteed.

This right here sums up everything you need to know about skyx26, they have no idea about game dev costs whatsoever. DLC doesn't make itself.

@bu1ld0g: with a service like gamepass, there isn't even a point in wasting your time to pirate games. I pay $180 an year for it, actually less with the discounts and get almost 500 newish games on tap. Minimal effort too, unlike pirating. I get the switch games I like, usually second hand, sometimes new. Then I trade them in for something else when I'm done. Switch games hold their value.

Again, it's a waste of time pirating.

@blaznwiipspman1: Haha yeah, I don't even pay for GamePass. Got 3 years worth of Gold via the MS rewards program then upgraded to UGP for $1!

I just wish Nintendo would let us throw money at them for Virtual Console games again. It's not the same with Nintendo Online, and nowhere near the selection.

Would it really be too much to ask for games to be tied to an account rather than hardware? Though I believe games are tied to accounts now with the Switch at least.

@bu1ld0g: Is that true ? Digital games on the Switch are tied to the console NOT the account ? We'll if that is true, I will never buy another digital game from Nintendo.

At least Sony and Microsoft tie the games to the account so if your console breaks you can download your games on your new console... I know my PS4 games transferred to my PS5 and I've got games from the 360 that I can play on my Series X...

Lost too many things from the Wii Shop closing....

@DavidinCT: As far as I am aware, going forward from the Switch, purchases are tied to an account not the hardware, the way they were with Wii/WiiU.

Iirc you had to do a local transfer of VC games via SD card using the Shopping Channel on Wii to move them over to WiiU.

I was mostly complaining about having bought several VC games on the Wii that the Switch is perfectly capable of playing (they are ROMs in an emulation wrapper). Those purchases really should be tied to an account instead of this half arsed Online service Nintendo are providing now.

Kinda similar to how you can buy PS1 games on the PS3 but they won't transfer over to the PS4/5 even though both are proven capable of running them and more via custom firmware.
