Marvel Plans To Use Captain Marvel To Introduce Muslim Superhero

Chances are this won't happen until phase four.

Slowly but surely, phase four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is becoming clear. While much of what will come after Avengers 4 remains unknown, two movies have been announced--a sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. However, it seems Marvel is also planning for the future of the Captain Marvel franchise.

Speaking to the BBC, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige says plans are in motion to use Captain Marvel as a way to introduce yet another Marvel superhero. The character in question is none other than Ms. Marvel, the MCU's first Muslim superhero. According to Feige, the arrival of Ms. Marvel "is definitely sort of in the works."

Now Playing: The History Of Captain Marvel, According To The Comics

He continues, "We have plans for that once we've introduced Captain Marvel to the world." With the Captain Marvel movie headed to theaters on March 8, 2019--and the superhero played by Brie Larson set to help close out Phase 3 in Avengers 4 on May 3, 2019--that clears the way for Ms. Marvel to possibly be introduced in a Captain Marvel sequel.

In the comics, Ms. Marvel is actually Kamala Khan, a Pakistani-American sixteen-year-old who idolizes Carol Danvers. After discovering she has Inhuman genes--much like her hero Captain Marvel, she takes up the Ms. Marvel identity Danvers once went by. She was first introduced in the comics in 2013.

I appreciate Marvel's efforts for cultural inclusion w/i its universe, but their attempt however comes across as their opportunity to capitalize off being politically correct and clickbaiting for headlines.

All the super hero's now are the creations for newer generations, more violence etc. Dead pool may as well be a zombie with a cool costume, but without the added danger of being killed. But you have to remember this is the new Disney Marvel.

Why are they calling her the first Muslim superhero.? Stories are about superhero's not about their religion. Besides that she has discovered that she is not all human, isn't that linking Muslim to non human.

It should just be.
Without announcing it before hand, without plastering it all over the internet, trying to let as many people know.

You actually potentially make a character less-relatable, as it will be perceived as just for a specific audience.

@BLiTZ_156: Considering the vast majority of comic book readers are Muslim, I'm surprised it took Marvel this long to introduce a character that their fanbase can relate to.

@gwalcott: I have a strong feeling that Muslims are not the majority of comic book readers.

I tend to dislike the sense of forced diversity in stories as a story should be focused on telling a story rather than meeting a specific checklist to be politically correct. That said, at least in the comics, Kamala Khan was diversity done right. Her religion and cultural background were just a part of who she was rather than her existence feeling forced representation. The fact that she is likeable and relatable helped as well. If they can introduce her well, and Marvel has done pretty well with their movies, is will be a nice addition to the future MCU line up.

I really wish the Identity politics would die already, I don't give a damn about her race, gender, nationality, I don't care, I didn't care about Storm being African, I didn't care about Trini being Chinese, Learning Adam is Korean in Powers was interesting as I wouldn't have known, But as I'm typing this I realized 90s TV did this whole diversity crap better, Know how? They didn't make a big stink about it, They just had the characters there and we learned about them from the stories and adventures, Not "Lets all stop and talk about so and so culture for the rest of the movie." And for the record, I'm black myself and I don't go around parading it like it's a badge of honor, It's just how I came into this world, I can't change it so why act all crazy about it?

@blazingsonic: Looks like you don't read comics at all, Kamala Khan was created to appeal to Muslim and Pakistani girls just as much as Captain America appeals to young American (mostly white) Children (and thus the variations of him) - how about you stop using "political correctness" as an excuse to spew your hate on a certain group, and this goes to not just you but the majority of "triggered anti Muslim minority" comments here.

@blazingsonic: Thank you, you nailed it right on the head! This is the same reason there's a controversy on The Simpsons, and on so many other shows, or in sports, movies, games, etc. it's out of control!! When are these big wigs going to get it, their identity politics, and the race crap, won't work here in reality, so keep it to yourselves, or feel the severe backlash!

@blazingsonic: it’s almost like nobody wants people to celebrate their culture. You don’t take pride in being a black person, great. That’s you. Others should be able to be prideful of their heritage and the skin they are in. How as a black person cant understand that, I don’t get.

@PARANOID365: No, I'm prideful of the skin I'm in and I celebrate it. You should be prideful of the skin you're in and celebrate it too. Diversity and the celebration of it is an awesome thing. It's you anti-SJW folks that seem to want to paint everyone with the same brush. We aren't all the same. And we should be able to celebrate that without fear. What is wrong with acknowledging the skin we are in, highlighting the facets of our cultures that make us different, celebrating those differences and learning from others? Why does that threaten you people so much?

@kaliskonig: That's a pretty bold statement, "people that can relate to storm look", painted w/ a pretty broad brush. Maybe in your circles, but not in mine, or the ones I've seen. That's what has always been awesome about the comic crowd, nobody cared/cares if your black, white, brown/ green, blue, or purple, what they care about is the characters superpowers, how that fits into the story, and the characters back story, and actions moving forward. Race has always been left out of it; let's keep it that way!

I can't tell by authors insistence at mentioning Ms. Marvel's nationality and religion three times in a four paragraph article (including the click magnet headline), whether these things were a factor in MCU's decision to include Kamala or not, but Chris seems to be laser focused on it. Just spit-balling here, but how about we move past defining her by her nationality/religion and just focus on her as a new super hero being added into the MCU?
