Marvel Plans To Use Captain Marvel To Introduce Muslim Superhero

Chances are this won't happen until phase four.

Slowly but surely, phase four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is becoming clear. While much of what will come after Avengers 4 remains unknown, two movies have been announced--a sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. However, it seems Marvel is also planning for the future of the Captain Marvel franchise.

Speaking to the BBC, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige says plans are in motion to use Captain Marvel as a way to introduce yet another Marvel superhero. The character in question is none other than Ms. Marvel, the MCU's first Muslim superhero. According to Feige, the arrival of Ms. Marvel "is definitely sort of in the works."

Now Playing: The History Of Captain Marvel, According To The Comics

He continues, "We have plans for that once we've introduced Captain Marvel to the world." With the Captain Marvel movie headed to theaters on March 8, 2019--and the superhero played by Brie Larson set to help close out Phase 3 in Avengers 4 on May 3, 2019--that clears the way for Ms. Marvel to possibly be introduced in a Captain Marvel sequel.

In the comics, Ms. Marvel is actually Kamala Khan, a Pakistani-American sixteen-year-old who idolizes Carol Danvers. After discovering she has Inhuman genes--much like her hero Captain Marvel, she takes up the Ms. Marvel identity Danvers once went by. She was first introduced in the comics in 2013.

@og_gamerzzz: Why focus on nationality/ideological leaning of someone and let the character do the talking? You don't say say 'white male protestant' when referring to Captain America do you GameSpot?

@proxima1025: To be fair, they probably would if "while male" were the rare exception and not the most common standard.

@Byshop: Not true, did they do that with storm, or any other ethnic superhero; I think not. Plus, people need to stop comparing this to superhero's of diffrent races, "Muslim", is a religion NOT a race! To that point religion is definitely not something that was ever pushed, or even talked about, don't let identity politics, & PC culture brainwash you.

That's not even close to being true. Do you even read comics?

I should also point this out to @flatovercrest too as he/she made a comment about Marvel not making Christian, Catholic, or Baptist characters unless they are villains because that's also not even close to being true.

There are tons of characters of some specific faith in comics (not just Marvel). Nightcrawler is a devout Catholic, which they even carried over into the film version of the character and spent some time on in X2. Rogue is Southern Baptist. Matt Murdoc (Daredevil) was raised Catholic and his main confidant is a priest. Pretty much every Native American character in a comic book ever follows some form of their particular tribal Native American Shamanism. Kitty Pride is Jewish and they even had her lighting a Menorah in the most recent cartoon version of the X-Men. Hershel from The Walking Dead is a Christian and he likens the rising of the dead to the "7 Years of Tribulation" in the Bible and Gabriel Stokes from the same comic is literally a priest. Thor, Odin, Loki, etc are literally gods in Norse mythology. Hell, even in the movie version of The Avengers, Captain America says to Black Widow "There's only one God, ma'am, and I'm pretty sure he doesn't dress like that."

Religion also has an impact on various storylines both as a good and bad element. Stryker became a reverend and waged a holy war on mutants in multiple X-Men storylines, including the one the second movie was loosely based on. And that's not even getting into comic books that are -literally- about heaven and hell such as Spawn, Constantine, Lucifer, Preacher, etc. Not to mention the fact that Storm was literally worshiped as a goddess by her tribe before she joined the X-Men.

They have also been used as a way to explore social issues for longer than even I've been alive (hell, Magneto is a Jewish holocaust survivor) so the idea of "keep your PC crap out of my comics" makes me chuckle pretty hard.

@Byshop: most common standard where? Not on this planet. The most common would be indians or Chinese by a fair margin. As for "minority's" i have no idea how the left decided that muslims are minorities. Their the second largest religion in the world. In the middle east its Christians who are a persecuted minority. I doubt marvel is making any superheroes described as "Christian" or "Catholic" or "Baptist", well not unless they can slot them in as the villain. Before someone pipes in with "but their minorities in the US!" then let me point out that white people are minorities in Hawaii using that scale (of course using "white" as a classification is as silly as using "black" or "asian" considering how much more complex nationalities are to people then simply their color).

Since its a "she" its a goodthing shes in America. If she was in almost any majority muslim nation she couldnt play superhero without a male family members approval, or drive a car, or wear too skimpy of a superhero outfit, or (i could go on). Honestly women cheering for Islam feels like Stockholm syndrome.

Of course im a racists monster for pointing such things out. I should bash Christianity, im sure id get cheered for that. Im all for diversity but also all for calling out what needs called out and islam has a very poor human rights record even only going back the past 30 years.

@Byshop: in *US* media. When i was in mexico there really were not a ton of white people on TV (or comics) unless you were consuming US/Euro media.

Im just pointing out we tend to have a pretty myopic view of what constitutes a "minority". Our view of it tends to be pretty localized and then we vocalize it in a very global/general way.

As an example, notice how as China and Russia have modernized and their populations have started gaming in mass that we are seeing less and less AAA games with China or Russia as the "bad guys".

So a teenage female "muslim" superhero comic is being marketed towards a US market and not at all towards the majority of the worlds Muslims. From what ive seen of the comic she is no more "muslim" then a good portion of the world is "catholic" (but never actually go to service or participate.) Shes an arabic girl born to muslim parents. But the clothing alone wouldnt fly in most of the muslim world.

@flatovercrest: Your point about what a minority is obviously being relative is fair, but again (with context) I was talking about comics and responding to "gee, why don't they do an article when there's a new white guy character?" and the obvious answer to that is "it's not news when something that happens all the time happens again."

But let's explore your point about media in different countries because that's interesting. Yes, of course we are talking about US media when we're talking about Marvel comics, and yeah the media created for other countries tends to be tailored to those countries. Media/products/brands made in the US are pretty much -everywhere- whereas the reverse isn't necessarily true. I travel internationally for work and I see it literally everywhere I go. You can go into a movie theater in pretty much any major city around the world and watch whatever movie is popular in the US at that time and in English but with local subtitles. I saw Infinity War in Hong Kong opening weekend a month ago, I watched Blade Runner 2049 in Basingstoke (UK) and every other film in the theater at that time was a US film. Hell, even when I was in Brazil I caught Lake Placid back when it was new. The same goes for TV. I saw more "Judge Judy" in the UK than I have ever sat down and watched in the US. Same deal when I was in Manila, and Japan. Yes, each country has their own stuff but the US stuff is omnipresent. Hell, I was in West Africa once about 20 years ago. I was on a road in the middle of nowhere and there was a stand nearby. I couldn't buy a bottle of water because they didn't have any, but I could buy a Coke. Go figure.

@flatovercrest: Pakistani are not Arabs. They are Indians who over 1,000 years ago were forced to convert to Islam.

@ChrisAnetkaC: Thank you for the response and information! I knew Pakistan was a little different due to history with India but didn't know much about it. Thanks for the information!

The super heroes in Marvel/DC never really announce their religion so that would be a bit odd. Don't know much about Ms Marvel but if it goes against her comic book character this will upset some people.
