Mass Effect 4 might not relate to Shepard "at all", says BioWare

BioWare writer also talks about Mass Effect 3's controversial ending.

BioWare has hinted that Mass Effect 4 will not relate to any of the events of the Commander Shepard story which ran through Mass Effect 1, 2, and 3.

The developer has made no secret that Mass Effect 4 is in pre-production, but in an interview with Complex lead writer Mac Walters spoke about how the team was looking to develop the series without Shepard. "Well, I can't get into details, but the idea is that we have agreed to tell a story that doesn't relate necessarily to any of the Shepard events at all, whatsoever."

Walters added that Mass Effect 4 can't feel like a spin-off, but that the game needed to accomplish that without Shepard or their companion characters. "Beyond that, that's what we've been deciding for awhile. But throughout it all, one of the key things is that it has to be Mass Effect. It can't just feel like a spin-off. It has to feel like a Mass Effect game at its heart, at its core. Just without the Shepard character or the Shepard-specific companions."

The developer also looked back on how the reaction to Mass Effect 3's controversial ending has developed over time. "It's been 18-19 months since it came out and my thoughts on it are that we addressed it the best we could in the extended cut. We're obviously not going to be changing anything now. We're only going forward."

"And I think that's one of the things we really underestimated, which was how much ownership people would take over a character that they could do that. You know, you've been given free choice to make all these decisions with this character, with the fates of millions of people, and then, you don't get to choose your own fate."

"I'm not saying that our decision was wrong or right. I think we just underestimated the impact that would have on certain players. To be fair, I get people, especially at the Cons, who will say, 'I loved it. It was heart-wrenching, but I felt it was right for my Shepard.' And to me, that's why it was the right path. But because there was no choice, it was going to be right for some people, and for others, in the middle, and other people were obviously very upset about it. In hindsight, I don't think there was anything we would have changed about that, but it is a really good lesson learned."

BioWare's next game will be Dragon Age: Inquisition, which will be released later in 2014.

How can you have a new game in the ME series that will "... tell a story that doesn't relate necessarily to any of the Shepard events at all, whatsoever."? What Shepard did impacted *everything* that goes on in that universe. Unless of course it is set in the past? Otherwise it is sort of a given that it will relate to them in some way, it would kind of be a huge moment in history.

I'm happy for the new game to not relate to Shepard directly though, a new story is probably for the best.

well i won't be getting a ps4 anytime soon, so this doesn't raise my blood pressure too much. that being said, i'll wager an entire dollar that the story involves some kind of Grand Admiral Thrawn ripoff as the main antagonist. the mass effect series imho just can't get away from star wars

A new story would be a good way to restart Mass Effect. So a new trilogy for the 8th generation of consoles. So no more Sheppard. I fine with that as long as they don't screw up the ending this time.

I think it makes sense, the next Mass Effect game will likely only be on next-gen consoles (and PC). Expecting people to play three last-gen games in order to fully understand the story would be expecting too much. A new next-gen Mass Effect trilogy could work though.

what if Wrex was the leader of the Krogan? we just dont see any of them? no race or society remembers Shepard or what he/she did for them? no mention? how can this be a sequel? if it is a prequel i will not buy it and i believe many people are with me and you guys at Bioware are more than aware of that!

Eh? A working title... Since it is the 4th game, off the back of 3. The Xbox One was referred to as the X720 for ages because no name had been announced up until then.

Who is the f****** idiots again? lol.

<< LINK REMOVED >> The last time this came up Bioware said people shouldn't call it "Mass Effect 4" because it would confuse people and make them think it was a continuation of Shepard's story when it isn't. Maybe it's just GameSpot adding "Mass Effect 4" in?

A little bit of story-logic would have gone a long way with ME3's ending. Any game they make that continues with the ME universe after ME3 will only agree with 1/4 of the presented endings. And so they're making another mistake by ignoring the majority of choices made by the player to end Shepard's story. With all the "lessons" learned from the investment made into each individual Shepard universe, they certainly aren't applying that knowledge too well.

So we're going to make a story in the Mass Effect Universe that doesn't mention or relate to the individual the entire universe refers to as their Savior.......

Sounds Awesome!

Man i do hope they don't milk out the old story at all. I'm expecting a brand new game with a brand new story and characters not a sequel to the current ME storyline.

<< LINK REMOVED >> But still a 100 years later, Shepard remembered as a war hero...I'd really want to know what happened after the ending...

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Yeah i mean they could have Easter eggs and such giving away what really happened back then. But what i don't want is a game where all of a sudden the entire cast from ME1-3 showing up and joins up with you like so many other games does.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I always prefer a new game in a series to take place after the last set of games rather than a prequel. I'm always curious to know what happened in the years coming after. They can, liike gamefreak said, place it many years after everybody's time came and went. Just leave the original characters mentioned in the Codex and move on with the meat of the story, imo.

i don't expecting to met any shep's companions but i'm definitely want to see or hear about them in ME4 maybe some of them grow up/rank up or whatever.. (maybe next time we visit the Citadel we can checkout some cool Urnot Wrex's Statue or maybe we can assist some gun-fight with turian-guerilla squad whose under General/Primarch Vakarian command)

So much for a game set hundreds of years in the future that still included the krogan and asari characters we already know and love. That would have been a good way to create a new but familiar story.
