Mass Effect: Andromeda Gameplay Footage Emerges, Shows Jetpack Feature

Check out this leaked footage, but be warned that it could be from 2014 and not representative of what the game looks like today.

Following a marketing survey for Mass Effect: Andromeda that leaked earlier this week, now some reported gameplay footage of the RPG from a developer's demo reel has emerged.

NeoGAF user Taker34 says they obtained the footage--see it here--from a "certain developer who is currently working on Andromeda."

One of the more interesting elements of the footage is a jetpack ability, which lets players jump into the air for a short period of time. You can see this in the animated GIF below.

Gaming super sleuth shinobi602 adds that the footage is from 2014. "It doesn't look like this now," they said.

No Caption Provided

According to the leaked marketing survey, Andromeda takes players to the Andromeda galaxy, with the series formula flipped on its head somewhat in terms of story.

"Players will lead the fight for a new home in history territory--where WE are the aliens--opposed by a deadly indigenous race bent on stopping us," reads a line from the reported description.

It goes on:

"Experience the freedom to traverse and explore a planet-dense but seamless open-world galaxy, rich with discovery. Play as the leader of a squad of military-trained explorers in an intense third-person shooter, with deep progression and customization systems. This is the story of humanity's next chapter, and player choices throughout the game will ultimately determine our survival in the Andromeda galaxy."

Just recently, BioWare's Alistair McNally said Andromeda--as well as the company's mysterious new IP--are "looking stunning." Andromeda was originally scheduled to come out this holiday, but has now reportedly been pushed to 2017. It is the fourth installment in the mainline series, leaving Commander Shepard behind.

Hopefully it's a game that uses a Vulkan or DirectX12…

This looks like some sort of prototype footage. I won't hold my breath for a jetpack, but, if it happens, it could open up some interesting traversal and combat mechanics in the Mass Effect universe.

"This is the story of humanity's next chapter, and player choices throughout the game will ultimately determine our survival in the Andromeda galaxy, until the third game, in which all of your choices will be rendered irrelevant, and a game of Simon will once again pre-determine the fate of the Galaxy. But thanks for your cash in advance."

@TheWatcher000: Much ado about nothing. Not many games have memorable endings. It's the journey that counts the most, and Mass Effect was one hell of a ride, even if EA's involvement impacted the third game in a negative way.

@consolehaven: But the journey ended in ME2. That's the problem... ME3 is the airplane going into the mountain with the engines on fire, and the ending is the crash... So tell me again the journey is what matters. Also, the journey (ME1 and ME2) becomes pointless thanks to ME3... So...

At least the armor design looks a future from the future just as I first imagined. And maybe the main character face finally isn't another generic Caucasian looking. A bit of originality doesn't hurt, I just hope they can keep it up.

@PETERAKO: Remember the first trailer repeatedly reporting that the features shown was from the multiplayer experience? I hope the single player hasn't become pointless for nowadays agenda.

@GunEye: But when it is made on purpose by the company, and claim a ''leak'' just like Fallout 4 suspiciously did on the most accessed porn site?

They don't need to make it open world. It's totally unnecessary. So many games go open world thinking it gives the players freedom but it just waters down the experience by giving you open, boring space that serves no purpose. If you have time to make it open world, why not just make it bigger and more detailed, still with a direction.

@Ayato_Kamina_1: You don't think it is needed, when Mass Effect was actually trying that since the first game. The COD-ification, or Gears of Wars syndrome if you will firstly started after the second and became perpetual on the third.

@Ayato_Kamina_1: I respectfully disagree, to some extent at least. Yes, I would much rather have linear gameplay compared to a poorly done open world, however, if the developers know what they're doing and know how to properly make it, a good open world just makes it a much better experience overall. People love options, exploration, freedom, etc. A well made open world gives you that (at least a sense of that)...

@Ayato_Kamina_1: That's an opinion, one which I disagree with. I personally prefer open world games for the simple reason that the alternative is doing them like they did before which I find way too linear. There is no discovery in previous mass effect games b/c they all take place in very segmented and planned spaces.

Same problem I had with Witcher 2, which was more open than ME games but still felt very contained. Having open world allows you to craft more believable environments. Like the opening mission in ME3, that was supposed to be a huge, sprawling capitol city on Earth. At no point during that mission do you ever get that feeling b/c all your doing is running down some linear paths with a pretty back-drop for a city. Then you cut to a city like Calpheon in Black Desert Online, great detail and atmosphere, it just feels like a city for that period.

@Ayato_Kamina_1: Someone give this man a medal! With all sincerity - thank you friend! Finally someone who speaks right about the open world trend. I couldn't have said it better myself.

Not all games should be open world, some games totally loose their direction and story drive while others end up ok but not with the same impact as an open-ended semi linear large game.

@Ayato_Kamina_1:

If BioWare can't do open world, that's their fault. Been making games for well over 20 years, they should be able to figure it out.

@slappy54: Open world games are generally a lazy way to make a game seem bigger than it is. It works really with some titles like GTA and fallout, but then games like farcry and others just fill the space with pointless side missions or empty space that serves no purpose.

I didn't like MGSV for the simple reason I wasn't a fan of the open world setup. It involved a lot of travelling from space to space. Give me an Earlier MGS game like 1,2 or 3 and I'll be much happier.

Don't get me wrong, open world is nice sometimes... but for games that have established themselves without the need to do open-world, i feel like a lot of them are just doing it now to follow suit with what seems to be the trend.

Mass effect is a game that should primarily be a story-oriented game. In order to maintain the pace that a story game needs, you would be better suited to not have an open world, give bigger, more detailed areas, but still make it all relevant. Earlier entries in the series gave you the freedom to choose what order you went to different planets and did missions. That's a great bit of freedom. What I don't think we need is to see it try and be a no man's sky. As vast as that game looks, it looks relatively devoid of things to do. I can't believe a ME open world game will have enough relevant points of interest to justify the open-world approach.

@Ayato_Kamina_1: Oh... Sorry. I misunderstood you... Obviously ME1 is story oriented, ME2 sadly (yet is awesome) lost the focus on the main plot, and then ME3, which I prefer not to focus much because is not even a true ME game.

@metalion: Open world would be nice change. I expect a new vehicle or means of travel will be introduced in the game. Pretty sure the Normandy went bye bye with Shepard. Also expect something like MGS:PP, different options for what to do and where to go when fulfilling missions but I don't expect stealth... maybe with cloaking skill on or a sniper... hmm

@rosinmonkekyx17: Action oriented would kill Mass Effect 1 sequel but it was quite entertaining for some time, before the third. You're both wrong, if both can be cooked up in some hybrid fashion, it will probably rock.

@Senor_Kami: Inquisition's problem wasn't that the world was larger (it wasn't open world) it was that all the side quests were just simplistic filler. If they can come up with better things to do to populate a larger game world, I'd love for Mass Effect to get away from the corridors.
