Mass Effect: Andromeda Gameplay Footage Emerges, Shows Jetpack Feature

Check out this leaked footage, but be warned that it could be from 2014 and not representative of what the game looks like today.

Following a marketing survey for Mass Effect: Andromeda that leaked earlier this week, now some reported gameplay footage of the RPG from a developer's demo reel has emerged.

NeoGAF user Taker34 says they obtained the footage--see it here--from a "certain developer who is currently working on Andromeda."

One of the more interesting elements of the footage is a jetpack ability, which lets players jump into the air for a short period of time. You can see this in the animated GIF below.

Gaming super sleuth shinobi602 adds that the footage is from 2014. "It doesn't look like this now," they said.

No Caption Provided

According to the leaked marketing survey, Andromeda takes players to the Andromeda galaxy, with the series formula flipped on its head somewhat in terms of story.

"Players will lead the fight for a new home in history territory--where WE are the aliens--opposed by a deadly indigenous race bent on stopping us," reads a line from the reported description.

It goes on:

"Experience the freedom to traverse and explore a planet-dense but seamless open-world galaxy, rich with discovery. Play as the leader of a squad of military-trained explorers in an intense third-person shooter, with deep progression and customization systems. This is the story of humanity's next chapter, and player choices throughout the game will ultimately determine our survival in the Andromeda galaxy."

Just recently, BioWare's Alistair McNally said Andromeda--as well as the company's mysterious new IP--are "looking stunning." Andromeda was originally scheduled to come out this holiday, but has now reportedly been pushed to 2017. It is the fourth installment in the mainline series, leaving Commander Shepard behind.

Two years is an eternity in game development. Highly doubt the game resembles this old footage in the present. Still, it's cool to see a potential gameplay element in action from 'found footage' so to speak.

@runstalker: Actually two years isn't a long time for most games. Most AAA games take 4-5 at least to develop. COD is an exception because they already have the tools created, and even those have three years now. Fallout 4 was in development for 7

@runstalker: It will look almost like this. They didn't make a completely new game in 2 years.

We've never had an actual official confirmation of the delay have we? According to every EA, Bioware and Mass Effect website/twitter/etc. the game is still due out Holiday 2016...

Don't care, looks like a gimmick.

Aren't we over this "three dimensional mobility" craze yet with the likes of Titanfall and Cod: Exosuit Derp come and gone?

I wan't to see a semi open-world Mass Effect on a bunch of different planets that also incorporates space flight and battles. Or hell just give me one really detailed planet and make the game take place on it.

I don't want the same game but with "new, improved, tactical" movement.

@mrbojangles25: 3D movement is here to stay, lol. It opens up more areas to explore, as well as a new way to move around the terrain. I'm actually glad we're not constricted to just walking around a flat terrain.

@liquidation_ily: I like the idea, I just don't like how everyone is jumping on board and not really doing it well. Wall-running has been done for decades; everything else is just a cool-looking jump-and-grapple of sorts.

It's all just very superficial, feels like "2.3" movement than actual three-dimensional movement.

And now the latest contender is throwing in jetpacks because it was the one fun thing in Battlefront. Big whoop.

@mrbojangles25: It feels a little premature to complain about Bioware not doing 3D movement well in Mass Effect 4. : \

@Mogan: Squeaky gear gets greased, dude. But yeah, it's early, they might get it right you never know.

And I am talking about 3D movement in general; still a gimmick to me, very few games do it well imo (in the fashion that Titanfall and CoD try to do it...not talking about Prince of Persia wall running or Assassins Creed parkour)

@mrbojangles25: If the leaks are to be believed, planetary transitions will be seamless and space battles will ensue when you approach alien planets.

@aegis_kleais: Beyond the minor annoyance of having to split up my library across yet another client service, Origin has always been just fine for me. I haven't even heard too many horror stories about it since it was new.

@Mogan: I'm sure it works well. Even Steam started off wonky and got better in time. But I don't like EA's policy of buying out developers and then forcing them to utilize only their marketplace. Heck, Valve sells their games through a myriad of marketplaces. It's about making the developer as much money as possible, but EA would rather heavy hand consumers into using their platform only; and I just don't approve of that process.

@aegis_kleais: I mean Ubisoft does it essentially with a more nuanced way that is objectively better for consumers. Beyond essentially having your background process always running two clients to run a game instead of one.

I worry that the story won't be nearly as enthralling as it was in the original. My first foray into M.E. was a magical experience. Something I haven't experienced since my first time seeing Super Mario Bros. or A Link to the Past for the first time. Learning about the Reapers was simply awesome.

@whatsazerg: @northArrow , Agree with you both, ME has been such an experience as a gamer, it is still up to this day my favorite story in a game and probably in scifi too. I am glad they are not following Sheppard´s story but instead will immerse us in the ME universe with a brand new story arc. I like it, cuz if in the end this is a let down or a success, the legacy of that ME we loved will remain intact.

I wish we knew more but I guess it's just a matter of time now.

Still worried about Casey Hudson's (not to mention the countless other dev's) departure. I can understand the other devs finishing their assigned tasks and leaving, but Mass Effect is Hudson's baby...

What happened, or what new opportunity arose, that had him up and leave mid-development? The new IP, perhaps?

@Neubmann: Casey Hudson can go.....pretty sure he was one of the ones directly responsible for the crap writing changes in ME3......also he oversold the game saying crap like there's 30,000 endings in the game which turned out false......which we should have seen for what it was, overselling a game......i liked ME3 but hated the ending, still do....

the other departures though IDK.....could be a bad omen or could be they were in Hudson's camp of thought and better they go before another game was ruined......

@darthrevenx: The problem you're referring to can be blamed on two letters: E and A.

Millions of dollars and hundreds of development hours was diverted from the core game in order to tack on a multiplayer component nobody asked for and we had already played in a dozen other games.

In essence, Hudson's version of Mass Effect 3 ran out of money during development. There were dozens of reports just after the game's launch of how Hudson and a skeleton crew of devs frantically tried to piece together the last hours of the game on personal time.

If EA hadn't wasted all that time and money on a crap multiplayer, we would have gotten a game closer to what Hudson had promised

@Neubmann: Or burnout. Dude had been working on ME for years and years. I mean, sure, it's his baby, but artists in any medium eventually want to get out, do new things.

I mean, as a ME fan, I'm slightly worried, too. But a little different, a little fresher, might be just fine. Better, even. We don't want to burn out, either.
