Max Payne returns in March

Rockstar confirms long-awaited, oft-delayed third-person shooter sequel Max Payne 3 finally set for release early next year.

It has been eight years since Max Payne 2 hit stores, but Rockstar Games' rough-around-the-edges New York City cop is about ready to hit the streets again. Rockstar today announced that Max Payne 3 is expected to launch next March on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC in North America and Europe.

Max is haunted by a traumatic past. And a botched theatrical adaptation starring Mark Wahlberg.
Max is haunted by a traumatic past. And a botched theatrical adaptation starring Mark Wahlberg.

Max Payne 3 is in the works at Rockstar Games' Vancouver studio, which took over development reins from Finnish shop Remedy (Alan Wake). The game will catch up with the now-former cop, who has spent the time since Max Payne 2 running from his troubled past. That has led him to Sao Paulo, Brazil, where he works as a private bodyguard for a wealthy family.

Payne will fulfill his duties with a healthy helping of the series' signature bullet-time gameplay mechanic, in which the player slows the world to a crawl and Max acrobatically leaps into action, firing twin pistols at anyone in range. That's not the only way to play, as Rockstar is supplementing that approach with a variety of weaponry and a cover system.

Rockstar is also incorporating multiplayer into the series for the first time with Max Payne 3. The publisher has said it will feature "traditional" multiplayer game modes with full-featured support for character progression, clans, and loadout options.

Originally hinted at in 2004, Max Payne 3 was formally announced in March of 2009 and set for release that winter. It was then pushed to the following summer, and then to the fall. When Take-Two delayed the game for the third time in less than a year, executives refused to even confirm in which fiscal year they were expecting the game to launch.

Im not a fan of them referring to it as Rockstars game. They may have published it but Max Payne will always belong to Remedy. Also, multiplayer is completely unnecessary.

I'd like to hear news about any innovations they are making for MP3. Let's face it, no game in this gen can stand on bullet time alone.

@TigerRifle1 The movie was complete garbage. I almost walked out but I wasn't wasting $8 just to walk. Actually if it wasn't associated with the game it might have been okay.....

Loved the original Max Payne, but not sure I like the new look. He looks a little too bad-a$$. The thing I liked about the original character is that he seemed like a pretty average cop.

MP 1&2 had amazing stories on top of pretty cool gameplay for the time. I think MP2 was first to put a camera behind sniper bullets wizzing in the air. If this game is anywhere close to how cool those 2 were at the time, it will be fantastic!

Ok , the news are great. The whole thing about the delays kill the game's momentum DRASTCALLY, and that is not good at all. Other than that, I still remember the great times from the first game, the LOADED atmosphere, the supercharged gameplay and nice campaign. Hopefully this one will carry a lot from the first game and introduce new elements other than androgenic alopecia and HD graphs. Craving for a MP3 trailer! When will I see one!

If this does in fact finally see the light of day come March 2012 (which honestly i can't see happening, likely at least one more delay) i'm not sure i'll be picking it up straight away as Mass Effect 3 is out at the beginning of that month so that's where my time will be focused. That said, I've always enjoyed the Max Payne games so i'll probably get to it once ME3 has been completed the 3 or 4 times in a row that's likely to happen .... lol

Finally they chose a different city than Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Rio de Janeiro is like Oakland,CA, or Daytona Beach,FL, they have one of the highest crime rates but everyone likes just because it's a beach city! Sao Paulo city is more similar to New York, in terms of culture, economy and population. Sao Paulo is the largest city in Brazil and South America and is one of the five-largest metropolitan areas on the planet, and it's literally a concrete jungle! With a lot of skyscrapers and financial centers in contrast to neighborhoods like Chinatown, but in this case, they have a Japanese neighborhood called Liberdade(freedom), Yakuza maybe? Perfect for CQB and car chases!

The Max Payne movie wasn't that bad. It deviated from the source material as much as any other video game based movie.

I'll hold out hope for this, as I loved the first two games. The original had some of the best-written voiceover for any game I've ever played, and the sequel had a fantastic story that's still worth revisiting. So far, MP3 just doesn't appear to share much with its predecessors when it comes to the noir setting that made them so unique. Hopefully that won't be the case once the game sees release.

What made Max Payne great wasn't just the game play but the environments as well. I hope they keep the environment relatively the same. With people talking and you can here them talking about Payne. That stuff was always great.

Rockstar Vancouver are the makers of Bully. Making Max Payne 3? Are they making it from bottom up, or they are finishing what Remedy started? Also what's up with Remedy?

@sensesfail99 I'll tell you why they add multiplayer, amigo: because if they didn't, half the comments on here would be "it's only 10-15 hours; not worth it!" and the sales would suffer. A multiplayer mode allows more perceived 'value' and helps with both critical reviews and general buzz. If gamers stopped complaining about quantity, they'd get more quality. Developers are only doing what they need to do to survive.

Okay so this says they are releasing in March, but under the following button it says Dec 1, 2011. WTF? gamespot your retarded. AND MAX PAYNE IS NOT A MULTIPLAYER GAME, why does every game dev feel the need to slap on a multiplayer mode to bring down the game. Now R* didnt fail with Red Dead multi and GTA multi so im hoping they go by the same rules.

The release went down with practiced bravado. A March date? It was like a grenade going off in my heart. No matter how many thugs I shot, there were more. Always more. Not even painkillers would make this ache stop. I had to have it.
