Maxis internal SimCity memo leaks

Studio general manager says server rollout in North America has been "challenging," promises studio is working 24/7 to fix issues.

248 Comments

Polygon has obtained an internal memo from Maxis general manager Lucy Bradshaw. It comments to developers on SimCity's rocky launch in North America and outlines the developer's plans to address the game's ongoing server woes.

No Caption Provided

"I'll start by saying that I couldn't be more proud of SimCity and the Maxis team that made it and are supporting it," Bradshaw wrote. "The game launched with great reviews from both new critics and the veterans who have loved this franchise for so many years. SimCity is a software achievement that everyone at Maxis is extremely proud of. I am also thankful for all of the hard work put in by our marketing, EA Global Publishing and Origin teams, which drove very strong Day One performance around world." [Bradshaw's emphasis.]

"Then we launched it," she added.

Bradshaw said more than 700,000 cities were created by players in the game's first 24 hours, but also acknowledged that a portion of gamers are "experiencing server instability and consequently, the rollout in North America has been challenging. It's also now evident that players across Europe and Asia are experiencing the same frustration."

Maxis' top goal, Bradshaw said, is to "quickly and dramatically increase the number and stability of our servers and with that, the number of players who can simultaneously access the game." A trio of new servers were added yesterday and more will be introduced this weekend, she said.

Bradshaw said Maxis is working "24/7" to fix the SimCity server issues and also commented on review scores for the game.

"I'd like to say that it's not fair--that the game score shouldn't be punished for a server problem," she said. "But it is fair. SimCity is an online game and critics and consumers have every right to expect a smooth experience from beginning to end. I and the Maxis team take full responsibility to deliver on our promise." [Bradshaw's emphasis.]

"The game launched with great reviews from both new critics and the veterans who have loved this franchise for so many years." Yup, that's true. 1.6 user review from Metacritics, a 5/10 from Gamespot, 3/5 from Giantbomb. Yup, superb review score.

@berserker66666

They were referring to the reviews they actually paid for, like Polygon who published their leaked press release I mean memo.

@toecutter00 @berserker66666 I don't consider them reviews. The only real review site in Giant Bomb. Honest to the core and down to earth. No BS. Plus Jeff Gerstmann and Ryan Devis, two elite gamers and reviewers, so can't go wrong.

Between this and Diablo 3 I hope companies are taking note that many gamers will avoid always online products because of shitty performance.

@kingJord @Karjah A lot of those sales were to people who have loved Blizzard games in the past and had faith that D3 would be just as good. That faith was damaged badly. I wouldnt expect Diablo 4 to sell like gangbusters.

@surferosh ok, I don't know much about the game, but from kevin's review it looks like the game is intended to be played only online right ? IMHO asking for no constant connection is like asking to play world of warcraft offline.

@ilantis i apologize, i was rude there.

No, the game can be played in sandbox mode and private regions. And of course that becomes unavailable when the servers are down, so you can't play the game.

@Kayweg @ilantis XD , anyway thx, I tought you could only effectively play with others since kevin mentioned the small map size that can't make your city so much independent.

@ilantis

nope.. the multiplayer component is not 'essential'.. it is a feature.. the whole game can be played as a single player experience if you want it to.. which more or less negates the 'need' for an always online connection. more or less same as Diablo 3

Sounds like a very intentional leak.

Why they couldn't anticipate their servers falling under the pressure of the population is beyond me. They DID have a beta test, though they didn't have an open beta stress test; which obviously was the reason they've failed at launch. Bad management decisions yet again; this trend is not ending.

Again, it happens, the internet and any hardware connected to it will NEVER be 100% operational. Just chill out and wait for it to get fixed. It sucks and is frustrating, but it is a video game and can wait to be played.

Hey, at least they are working to fix it as fast as they are so that says something as a lot of placed still drag their feet to fix things these days.

@nickpeck36 You should be able to expect to buy a complete product on a release day. A product that is not functioning at the time it is released is obviously not ready to be released. They could have had an open beta with limited functionality to properly stress test their servers but they didn't. They said: ''F*ck it, let's hope this sh*t works''.

@nickpeck36 O.k. How about you pay full price for a car and then have to wait days or weeks for the engine to be installed... With no guarantee that it will ever run or be delivered...

Did they not guarantee that Simcity will be fully operational eventually? I know people hate EA, but I can't imagine them ever crapping out a game and having no intentions of making it work...not good business strategy.

Last evening I was able to get into the game via a Europe Server (I'm in NA). Since it was very late, the servers were empty, and I experienced the game as it should be, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I only wish I left it on as today not getting any connection. This server side gaming honestly puts a foul taste in my mouth. I suspect like many if this problem isn't resolved within a weeks time...well what am I saying here. The people who bought it, like myself will move to something better, but in EA's eyes they've already taken our money, so who cares. This should come to a surprise, EA has long moved away from caring what it's gamer's think to more aligning to what their Share Holders think.

I do tip my hats at what they tried to accomplish with this game. In the few hours I played with no network issues, I enjoyed the game, and could see this being a great game. But the problems out weight the joys considerably. If I could get my money back I probably would, but am not holding my breath as we know this is EA and they've shown in the past it's about profit more than anything else.

@ehubba We all wanted to play Simcity, but most did not buy it because of the fear of what happened. This is not the type of game that can be online. Every limitation of this game is due to the fact that it can't be an online game. The small city size, the limitations on region ownership, etc... everything scaled back for online which no one cares about or even wants. Then it doesn't even WORK! LOL

@Triton Because I don't think you understand the severity of the situation. This is a business plan(always online--DRM, blah blah) and it has gone horribly wrong. Other companies are surely paying attention to see if this works and possibly following suit. This failure could mean that always online will die with this game.

It baffles me how fuckin stupid people are into thinking DRM is causing all the issues here. The online component goes deeper than DRM. If it was just DRM they wouldn’t have these issues (seriously, a small DRM check wouldn’t keep overloading servers). It was the decision to integrate core functionality of the game into the server (region play, sever side saves of your city, global market, etc…) that causes the issues here. But DRM makes for the better talking point, doesn’t it?

@Prats1993 Yes, DRM is just part of the problem. I'm sure this worked flawlessly in limited scope, but needing servers to run a good majority of the game for millions of players? What were they thinking?

You're correct but if there was an offline singleplayer mode like the previous SimCity's this wouldn't be such a problem because people could still play their game. The fact that you need a constant internet connection to play a game other than an MMO is idiotic.

Things like DRM and stuff like this never did bother me. I am already connected to the internet 24/7 anyway. As long as the game is fixable I don't mind waiting.
