Medal of Honor PC recruiting for open beta

Early trial for DICE multiplayer shooter runs October 4-7, will let players test two maps and multiplayer modes, check out playable Taliban controversy for themselves.

Ordinarily, when a Medal of Honor is awarded, it's not going to be taken away. Next month will see an exception of sorts, as Electronic Arts will be giving PC gamers an open beta for its first-person shooter Medal of Honor but will be pulling the plug on the testing period after four days.

Medal of Honor paints an Afghanistan whose chief exports are rubble and car fires.
Medal of Honor paints an Afghanistan whose chief exports are rubble and car fires.

Starting October 4 and running through 11:59 p.m. on October 7, the Medal of Honor PC beta will let players around the world test out two of the game's multiplayer modes on two separate maps. The two modes will be Sector Control (capture and hold strategic points) and Combat Mission (one team is charged with completing five separate objectives, the other with stopping them).

The open beta will also give PC gamers a chance to see the cause of the recent controversy surrounding the game: the ability to play as insurgent forces in Afghanistan fighting against US-led coalition troops. EA defended the game by pointing out the frequency with which other shooters allow gamers to play as Nazis or terrorists in their multiplayer modes.

In a statement announcing the open beta, EA Games label president Frank Gibeau said, "We also hope that by offering the multiplayer open beta, we can clear up any misunderstanding about the patriotism and respect that are the foundation of this game. The Medal of Honor franchise has always shown extraordinary reverence for American and Allied soldiers--this game is no exception."

Relocated from World War II to post-9/11 Afghanistan, the new Medal of Honor will take on Modern Warfare with its own approach to contemporary combat when it launches on October 12. The game focuses on a member of the most elite group inside the modern-day US Special Operations Command, the Tier 1 Operators.

Instructions on downloading the beta will be available from the game's official site. For more on Medal of Honor, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Is the beta as polished as Starcraft 2 beta? If it is, it's great then.

Well, I can just imagine the terrible review scores awaiting on Metacritic. I'm so sorry for EA and the MoH franchise, because MoH was a GREAT series, but taking too many vibes from CoD, and making the multiplayer a Battlefield COPY is not going to do this installment any good. Hey, to be honest, because of this new surge of modern shooters, MoH should go back to its excellent roots, but in a completely different historic battle.

@ TheVGamer, dude wtf are you talking about? Did you play BF:BC2 MP beta? That was a million times better than this crap. And the beta was no different than the game. So since the first MoH beta sucked there is a high chance it's gonna be the same as the game. I mean they only have what, less than a month and that's not even gonna be close enough for them to do any major changes. So since the MP beta sucked the MP in the game will probably suck as well.

"It was a beta not a demo, it's supposed to suck" Yeah, truth be told dude, I have NEVER in all my history of beta'ing, ever played a more terrible, half-made game than that beta showed me. Dawn of War 2's Beta was a fully made game, they could of put it out there as is. On the other hand, MoH's beta was, literally, I am not exagerating this, the most unsatisfying shooter experience I have EVER encountered in the last 5 years. A.k.a GUNS NEED RECOIL. If they don't have ANY recoil (like in this game...) they don't feel like real guns anymore.

God dammit, it was a beta not a demo. It's supposed to suck! It's like having a sneak peek of unfinished painting. The painting is fugly cause it's not finished! Jesus... It seems ppl are so ignorant and stupid that public beta isn't worth the effort.

@ Toysoldier34: Troops aren't banned from owning this game altogether. What happened is that AAFES (the company that runs most of the stores on Army and Air Force bases) said that they won't sell the game and the Gamestops on base won't sell the game either (people who preordered it in a Gamestop on-base had their preorder transfered to the closest off-base Gamestop). Troops can still buy the game and play it on base, they just have to drive off-base and buy it at another store (Walmart, Best Buy, for example) or order it online (Amazon, for example) to get it. Alot of married troops don't live on base anyway, they just drive on base to work everyday and live in an apartment or house off-base.

in response to the other "the only reason cod..." comments. to me, the only reason COD was so damn great was because of modern warfare. that game truly revolutionize FPS. it gives it a memorable story, relatable characters, and a unique experience. it's like suddenly, you're playing a work of art, instead of just another shooter.

this "beta" is different as they have updated it with slightly better graphics and fixed a lot of bugs plus balancing of weapons. List is on this link. << LINK REMOVED >> . I might give it a go, might be still cheating but they fixed the laggy deaths i think.

I have family who have served and would have no problem with this. Its reality, its funny how some make a lot out of something they probably won't experience. More power to DICE for going for it.

@JOKER677 No I heard it from my mom a while back that there was a game that was being banned by the military and troops can't have it on base. She isn't a gamer but saw it on the news and called me up to see if I knew more. This story is much bigger to people that don't play games than most of our stories.

Between Metal of Honor, Battlefield (though you fell off just a tad after Modern Combat), GRAW, and Ghost Recon, I don't know who to cheer for. All of these series are just plan awesome. Sorry COD, you make the military games feel like NBA Jams on crack.

@Teck157713 , Medal Of Honor is a great series. The only reason that COD is popular is because they hype it way too much.MOH is the real best shooter out there :)

I just dont see the point of MOH in the gaming industry right now. Its clearly Ea's attempt to cash in on the whole COD movement. At least for the other three top shooters you can say they offer different styles of gameplay. Halo, COD, and BFBC2 all offer up a different exp imo but MOH is lost somewhere in between COD and BFBC. It doesn't offer up anything new and it dosent do anything better so whats the point?

@TheVGamer Please, VGamer. You're just like everybody else, and you truly haven't a clue although you try to make it seem otherwise. "It's just a beta!" We've heard this so many times, it's ridiculous. Anyone with an ounce of knowledge about today's process understands that beta tests are often representative of the final product albeit a few tweaks here and there. From the Bad Company 2 beta to the final product, for example, was not a large difference. In fact, the game wasn't dramatically improved until they released patches AFTER the final version was in stores for months and large patches were tossed on top of us. What we're seeing here is what we're getting. I can guarantee you that, because this game is seeing an October release date, what we saw in the last beta will not be far different from what we'll get in this beta just before the game is released. The "it's only a beta" excuse simply doesn't work anymore. The beta process was once different years ago and games were dramatically different by the time they left beta, but those days are long gone, my friend. Ditto for the Crysis multiplayer beta. Ditto for any other recent multiplayer beta out there.
