Metal Gear Solid movie on indefinite hold

Film producer Michael De Luca says Sony's long-gestating big-screen adaptation of Konami's iconic stealth-action series may be stillborn.

Last week, a reported Spider-Man 4 delay cast doubt over the future of the Warcraft movie. Now, another big-screen adaptation of an iconic game franchise appears to be in trouble--if not canceled outright.

Solid Snake is apparently not ready for his close-up, Mr. De Mille.
Solid Snake is apparently not ready for his close-up, Mr. De Mille.

Speaking to movie-news site Collider, producer Michael De Luca said that work on Sony Pictures' Metal Gear Solid movie has ceased indefinitely. "I don't think it's going to move forward because I got the sense that there may not be enough of a coordinated will at this point on the side of certain parties to see a movie get made," said the veteran filmmaker.

Though he did not name Metal Gear Solid publisher Konami or developer Kojima Studios by name, De Luca indicated that differences between the two parties and Sony were to blame. "The video game companies are very protective of their property, and there are certain things a studio requires freedom-wise to market and distribute a movie effectively in a global marketplace and sometimes getting those two things to match up is really hard," said the producer. "In the case of Metal Gear Solid, the agendas just [didn't]…not because the parties weren't amicable, it was just kind of impossible to get the agendas to match up."

Though neither Konami nor Sony Pictures had responded to requests for comment as of press time, De Luca's comments appear to signal the end to the Metal Gear Solid movie. The live-action project was first revealed at the 2006 Electronic Entertainment Expo by game designer Hideo Kojima, who was to be its executive producer. Sony revealed its involvement just under three years ago, with Christian Bale rumored to be playing Solid Snake at one point.

[UPDATE] GameSpot reader RedMageNeko points out that there already is a live-action MGS movie--the unauthorized, fan-made Italian production Metal Gear Philanthropy.

OK, we need a good movie, lets be honest, its rare to have a movie that can keep up with the game. They have to holly wood it up too much and some are pretty good but it still looses the games feel and essence. I still like it when they at least try to make them, if anything at least it would be a good movie. So I say continue with the work!

I don't think Metal Gear would translate well to the big screen. The characters would be silly on film.

As long as there is good acting, special effects, and they follow the storyline of the game, this would be a surprisingly good movie.

As many said this before, there is far too much content to make just one movie, and if this isnt directed by Kojima, there is no point in making it since it has to be exactly like the game to be credible.

Honestly, I think they should do a series of movies or a mini-series done on HBO or Cinimax (like Band of Brothers). I just think there is far too much material to do the story justice in a single or even a couple films. Maybe we could one day get a Ghost in the Shell-like animated series based on the games, which I'd be happy to watch if done well. In any case, I'd only want Hideo to direct it himself, as I would fear too many liberties would be taken by someone not passionate about the world crafted, and tones set in the stories of the games. Heck, I'd be happy to just watch a movie made of all the in-game scenes rendered in high quality, they certainly stand their own against most TV shows today, anyways.

Kurt Russell could play the part of naked snake/ big boss and solid snake but he is too old now to play solid snake the movie should start off from the beginning where the conflict started about the patriots and outer heaven and snake eater then you can go forward in time with the outer heaven and solid snake and big boss conflict like in the msx II stories metal gear and metal gear 2 solid snake then you can do the solid saga.

Who the hell cares if the movie wasn't as good as the game, it still would have been sick that they made a movie for the game. I do know a good site where fans made a great fan made film however, mgs-philanthropy.com, or .net or .org one of those. Check it out cause they put years into making it, and they're working on more parts for it. But screw all of you who thought the MGS movie would have sucked, any real fan would have counted the days until it came out.

I really don't think a movie will have any chance of doing the game justice. Besides, the game is already feels so much like a movie that making a movie of it just seems futile. I hope it is delayed forever

It wouldn't have been good anyway, can you imagine fitting that kind of endless dialog and story in a hour and a half to two hour film? maybe it's better this way.

I think Hughe Jackman would play a better Solid Snake. Look at him in X-men. Am I right? And Im glad the movie is on hold. I'm a huge Metal Gear Solid fan and i rather wait and have the movie done right than screw it up.

Some games should stay as games, many characters out there (including snake) are unique and you can't find the right actor for them, and some storys are long and can't be told in three hours and MGS is the longest one.

It's better this way. I don't want to see one of my favorite franchises get destroyed because someone who was unwilling to participate botches it.

MGS would have been a great and epic movie if Hideo were to direct it.. it could have been the very first videogame to movie adaptation that didnt completly suck (Except for Advent Children). But no way in hell could Christian "the b*tch" bale play the battle-heardened clone that we all have grown to love. if anyone could play him.. this is a stretch because they dont sound alike is Russle Crowe. They are both aged and Crowe is a great actor. Or even Kurt Russel "from which Hideo drew inspiration from in Escape From N.Y. especially since Snake has werner syndrom and has aged prematurely

Great. I'm sure Hideo is sticking by his guns to ensure that it is not turned into a barrel of crap like most game to movies, if not all. And I bet Hideo has the right ideas to make sure that the game transitions into live action well without being some quirky mess. Besides The Sims is supposedly going to be turned into a movie so we can all look forward to that. Not. :P

Konami a CGI movie is the way to do it like the Final Fantasy Movies if you make a live action Movie all you will get is some clueless script writer who doesn't know a thing about the MGS series and its history and will scree it up big time make a CGI movie and stick with the original voice cast .
