Metal Gear Solid movie on indefinite hold

Film producer Michael De Luca says Sony's long-gestating big-screen adaptation of Konami's iconic stealth-action series may be stillborn.

Last week, a reported Spider-Man 4 delay cast doubt over the future of the Warcraft movie. Now, another big-screen adaptation of an iconic game franchise appears to be in trouble--if not canceled outright.

Solid Snake is apparently not ready for his close-up, Mr. De Mille.
Solid Snake is apparently not ready for his close-up, Mr. De Mille.

Speaking to movie-news site Collider, producer Michael De Luca said that work on Sony Pictures' Metal Gear Solid movie has ceased indefinitely. "I don't think it's going to move forward because I got the sense that there may not be enough of a coordinated will at this point on the side of certain parties to see a movie get made," said the veteran filmmaker.

Though he did not name Metal Gear Solid publisher Konami or developer Kojima Studios by name, De Luca indicated that differences between the two parties and Sony were to blame. "The video game companies are very protective of their property, and there are certain things a studio requires freedom-wise to market and distribute a movie effectively in a global marketplace and sometimes getting those two things to match up is really hard," said the producer. "In the case of Metal Gear Solid, the agendas just [didn't]…not because the parties weren't amicable, it was just kind of impossible to get the agendas to match up."

Though neither Konami nor Sony Pictures had responded to requests for comment as of press time, De Luca's comments appear to signal the end to the Metal Gear Solid movie. The live-action project was first revealed at the 2006 Electronic Entertainment Expo by game designer Hideo Kojima, who was to be its executive producer. Sony revealed its involvement just under three years ago, with Christian Bale rumored to be playing Solid Snake at one point.

[UPDATE] GameSpot reader RedMageNeko points out that there already is a live-action MGS movie--the unauthorized, fan-made Italian production Metal Gear Philanthropy.

everyone saying that it sucks that this movie isn't happening... needs to realize how disappointed they would be after it happened.... no one can do justice to snake... no one. if you want to see a really good MGS movie... play MGS... any of them will do... love em all. because they are a good blend of what makes a movie good and what makes a game good... I don't need Jo Shmo to ruin snake with an attempt at portraying him on screen... when I can pop in a game and see snake as he ought to be.... a video game. I think Hollywood should abort the abortions they call video game to movies. MGS started a video game and it should stay a video game.

Grr.... This really sucks. After countless movie adaptations of games that are absolutely terrible, and after the Halo movie fiasco, I really had faith in this one... and now here we are. So disappointing. It's almost as if video-game based movies, no matter how great the licence, are just doomed to failure, either because they're awful or because of a fate like this. It's a huge shame.

Good. I'd much rather it not be made at all than Hollywood load it up with a bunch of BS just to make it a block buster. Thanks to , Kojima, or whoever it was that stood their ground. Metal Gear Philanthropy is good enough anyway. lol

This is good news... it's better to leave untarnished then jack everything up (Hollywood). I actually predicted this about 2 years ago. Although I'm a HUGE MGS fan, I'm glad about this! Protect your story, Kojima sama!

This is probably good news... Hollywood shouldn't be given another chance at destroying another videogame via a crappy movie.

I don't want a hollywood movie I would like kojima to make his own movie like a reaaaaly long cut scene cuz they r awesome at doing cut scenes and it would be cool and just have a whole movie in 3d.. that way no wannabe director could screw mgs up :D

The game (mgs4) is already like a movie to begin with. Don't see a need to actually try and make it even more realistic lol.

First, to do this movie right there must be a good story, this can be a franchise just like James Bond because the character is the core element. I rather they put a no name actor who we are not familiar with rather than some Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman or R Downey Jr. Don't get me wrong, they are all successful actors and they all played a character which launched them into stardom. And putting them into another character will only spoil it, we need a fresh face to make this movie right, no more no less, we need a perfect plot and less CG.

There are a number of game adaptions that were a bad idea from the word Go. You just knew it was not going to work, MGS would be near the top of that list. A movie would just be comletely inadequate at capturing what makes MGS, MGS or in capturing the sheer amount of content stuffed into the series. It would be an adaption in name only,

In other words... Konami wouldn't let a Hollywood movie studio screw up the franchise with a crappy movie starring Jet Li as Solid Snake... I'm glad for this. The games are too amazing :D

@ mankar mgs4 worked amazingly well as a game/movie i thought... @ koi-neon i agree with you partially, but i think with a series as strong as this, and a game with as strong of storytelling and cinematics, this would not be one of the junky vidgame movies

As much as I love Metal Gear, the series is already medium confused. Kojima clearly doesn't know if he's making a film or a video game series. No need to make a film out of it.

I have mixed emotions on this one. I'd love a Metal Gear Solid movie but, after all the disasters in video game movies maybe it's for the best that we don't have one. Way to Hideo Kojima-San for not letting the directors and producers screw around with the legendary material!

I would love to see this movie be made, unfortunate things didn't work out. I hope they loosen the knots a little and work things out because MGS is basically at an end (console wise, i mean MG rising may not be "MGS" that we know and love..one can only hope), and any excuse for more MGS i'm all for.

It sound like the director probably was screwing around with things and Kojima didn't like it. I have no doubt Kojima would probably want everything done the way he sees fit, and probably would keep a stranglehold on the project. It's understandable, it's a great series. If I had created it I wouldn't want someone screwing around with it either Why a movie of this is necassary I don't know. The games have tons of cinematics, and tell large, intense, touching tales. Why risk a crappy translation of a great product? ...Even if the games did get a little to cheesy for their own good at times.

I have been a fan of the series for the last 9 years. And I remember back in 2001 me and my friends thought it would be cool to see one made. But now that I am older and look back at those thoughts I say "God I hope they never plan on converting MGS into a movie. Since it would warp and destroy parts of the story to please dim witted movie goers."

Not so sure you can fit enough of a story into a 2 hour movie to make it a real MGS game. Don't think a movie would do the series justice really. I could see them doing a animated series though since that could work and you could fit in everything that needed to be seen.

metal gear 4 is my favorite game of all time. 360 will never see metal gear just like sony will never see gears or halo. that said, the new raiden game should be out in 2011. it will be on both consoles.

i like many others am acually happy its not happening, and it seems that its NOT happened for all the right reasons!!! I mean does the MGS world really need a "Snake gets teamed up with hot girl, which at first hates him, but then slowley likes him more and more, where at the end when he almost dies, they finally get together" story?....nah i dint think so..lol

I don't want to put MGS on some holy pedestal, because while I like the series, each of the games has flaws. The story is far from perfect, but it's good in the video game world. However, MGS's story would not be welcome in the slightest in the theater. To fit any movie-sized portion of the story into an actual movie would require lots of cutting and complete rewrites to so many elements, in order to make it palatable to movie-goers, that calling it MGS would be pretty inaccurate and just pointless. I think everyone wins if filmmakers just focus on making the best original stuff they can, and game developers do the best they can with video games.

this awesome game does not need a movie, as it is it's own damn movie. hollywood being the fat ass leech that it is seriously needs to stay away from mgs because i truly do not want to see this beautiful series become another victim of the affair that should have never happened. the hollywood and video game affair. it would be true blasphemy in every sense of the word, i mean c'mon the story has been told already, just let it be already.

you know, whether this is a movie or not it's all good. i mean, look what happened to dragonball? the movie was bad, the games keep coming and don't change much. Metal Gear has an incredible story, and it's majority of it is ALL gameplay. Better to just keep evertything translated to gaming, so we could experiece it all instead of just watching it.

Why bother so many game to movie transition have such a high failure rate because the idiot director cant stick to the game story. He either cut out a vital part of the story or add crap just to lengthen it. Look how many game movies fail. DOOM, Super Mario Bros,Street Fighter,Mortal Kombat: Annihilation(the first movie was good),House of the Dead(just horrible),BloodRayne 1 and 2, Max Payne(story was way offcourse from the game) etc... The Failure rate is just too high.
