Microsoft Announces Project Scorpio Console

New console will deliver true 4K gaming with six teraflops of performance.

Today at Microsoft’s E3 2016 press conference, the company confirmed the existence of a new console. Named Project Scorpio, the announcement confirms rumors we’ve been reading for the past few months. Set to release in 2017, the new system will feature 8 cores, 320Gb memory bandwidth, and six teraflops of performance that will allow for true fully uncompressed 4K gaming. This suggests it will not simply be upscaled 2160p.

Like the Xbox One before it, Project Scorpio will use a SOC (system on a chip) solution, which means that it's highly likely to use high-end integrated graphics.
Like the Xbox One before it, Project Scorpio will use a SOC (system on a chip) solution, which means that it's highly likely to use high-end integrated graphics.

Microsoft also unveiled that Project Scorpio would be backwards compatible with both the Xbox One and Xbox One S, and you’ll be able to use the same peripherals and controllers with the console as well.

Now Playing: GS News Update: New Xbox Revealed at E3 2016

The 4K news is surprising, since the resolution is extremely graphically demanding on hardware and is four times as sharp as 1080p. For reference, leading $400 PC graphics cards still struggle with 2160p. To dissuade disbelief, however, one developer in the promo video stated, “They’re really going for it.”

In addition to the 4K announcement, Microsoft also stated that the console would also be capable of targeting 60fps performance as well and that it would deliver a “no-compromise” experience.

Microsoft also alluded to the fact that Project Scorpio would be used to power VR games as well, which makes sense because VR is so graphically demanding due to the fact that it requires a high resolution and fast, consistent frame rate. Bethesda's Todd Howard was in the promo video, and alluded to the idea that the VR version of Fallout 4 would be coming to the console. Considering the VR version of the game is currently only announced to support the HTC Vive virtual reality headset, this could potentially mean we'd see HTC Vive support for Project Scorpio.

No price was announced for Project Scorpio, but you can stay tuned to GameSpot for more E3 coverage as news develops.

You fail to understand, Xbox moved away from generations. Scorpio is still an Xbox one.... Xbox is now a platform like PC, Android, iOS, etc.

No more locking games behind generational hardware upgrades. Now you just upgrade to a new device when you need to.

Xbox has different devices with different pricing points for gamers to choose from. And all games and apps work going forward.

Do your games stop working on Android each year as a new midrange and flagship models are released....no

Microsoft is relying in Moore's law where the transistor count in a chip is doubled every two years. They expect to have cheaper and more powerful SOIC solutions in more than a year from this announcement to the release of the Scorpio console. That's why we can't say that it won't be possible yet

Am I the only one who feels like a 'gaming news' agency where two of the leading reporters blatantly stated they do not remember the last time they turned on one of the top two gaming consoles, just had two reporters give a big argument for why they shouldn't have their jobs?

If you don't do your job, you should not have it. Your job is supposedly games journalist. Meaning you should probably play a system that is generating 25% of new game sales. Unless your job isn't games reporter and is instead shill. Then I guess it's perfectly acceptable.

Of course I don't believe for a second you don't remember the last time you launched the Xbox One. I just think you said that because you were directed to.

Why so many upset pc gamers?

I'm a PC gamer and all I can see is this being great news for us. Consoles becoming more like PC's, higher quality ports, fantastic graphics, the cost of pc hardware coming down to compete.

@beepbep: yeah, i remember running 720p content upscaled to 1080i and that looked quite a bit worse than the original 720p format. going from the 900-1080p that XboxOne currently uses all the way up to 2160i would look much worse in comparison.

I think Microsoft has a bigger plan for the system after the Scorpio, they are creating a bridge between the Xbox brand and Window 10, probably means they are gonna drop the Xbox brand an just change their console after the Scorpio to run PC games, I wouldn't be suprised if they attempt to buy steam in the next couple of years.

@Runeweaver: considering Microsoft doesn't manufacture PCs themselves, later Xbox iterations could be a good way to start offering their own Windows systems to basic home users and gamers.

Also Xbox and Windows 10 have already been merged. What's going to happen is Xbox will just become a service for Windows sort of like how Word is a service.

It's going to take a fantastic game line-up before I even think about purchasing. Bought an Xbox One on release day and still haven't gotten my value out of it. Exclusives this generation have sucked terribly: Ryze (trash), Dead Rising 3 (garbage), Kinect Sports Rivals (trash-garbage), THREE(!!!) Forza games (and now a fourth), Halo 5 (343 has officially slaughtered that franchise), Halo MCC (lol), Ori (available on PC), Call of Duty: Robot Edition (Titanfall), and Sunset Overdrive (probably the only true "not also on pc" exclusive that is actually good). There are a couple more that I can't be bothered to remember, but overall it has been an awful generation for xbox. Gonna need to see some real mind-blowing shit for the scorpio before I cast my lot with microsoft again.

@Vambrotious: They're going for a "play anywhere" approach. I just traded my x1 in for cash today to put towards a GTX1080 or 1070 SLI setup. I'm excited about what Microsoft are doing with the surge of emphasis on PC gaming. It looks like they're bringing in Scorpio as an equivalent to a windows PC which is locked down to their windows store. PC is getting crackdown 3, Forza and now hints of Halo 6!

i can't wait to play 4k on the new xbox console at 3 frames per second. Gonna be a blast

The nvidia gtx 1080... its able to do 9 Tflops... and even that can't hit 60fps in some games at 4k... and it costs over 700 dollars. This "6 tflop" machine they claim they are making won't be doing 60fps 4k, and if it does 60 fps at 4k, it will be the lowest textures of any game you've ever seen. Imagine Minecraft, but worse... but hey, its 4k so at least theres no aliasing... even though the textures look like a NES game.

@Yams1980: a 390X or a GTX 1080 can do 60fps @ 2160p pretty easily at the settings the XboxOne uses for most games. my 8GB 290X can even do ~45fps @ 2160 on Witcher 3 with a mix of low-medium settings, no AA, and minimal post processing.

but i'm sure the Scorpio will be holding them back at 30fps and very low settings for that resolution. pretty much the same as the current gen is for 1080.

@Yams1980: A little too early for that kind of speculation. Depends on how hard they go for it. Price is going to be the only reason to stop them, but then they can just offer the other models of the X1 to those who can't afford scorpio. It's great to see they're at least trying something with this! It sounds pretty capable spec wise.

@Yams1980: Minecraft but worse? Lol no. Just no. The graphics (as usual) will simply be less texture/shader/antialiasing rich than pc games. The games will look just as modern as they do now, but way sharper.

The 1080 struggles to max games with aliasing, shaders, textures cranked up to INSANE levels on bleeding edge games and benchmarks. It runs almost all games well over 60 fps in 4k and intensive games like crysis 3, metro last light, etc. can play well over if you aren't setting your graphics to godlike levels. When you run 4k you DONT NEED anti-aliasing though because it's too small to see. So no, no nes textures. Just no. The new xbox will look just fine in 4k, with decent fps.

@Yams1980: actually they will be able to pull of high settings easily at 60 fps 4K and with a custom board made to do just that and with no much else being processed on a console they will pull it off no problem. Yea it might be 500 or 600 but they will build so many in bulk the cost should be lower.

@Tidemoo: 60 fps AND 4K may be a stretch. I have yet to see anything from Microsoft which includes both of those specs in a single statement. The numbers were thrown out separately, suggesting an either/or situation.

Still Scorpio will be a vast improvement over Xbox One and PS4, and will even exceed the PS Neo specs. And it will be compatible with every Xbox One game & accessory and every 360 title added to the backward compatibility program. I'd sell my launch X1 to upgrade after 4 years.

@Tidemoo: it doesn't work like that. There is almost no overhead difference between a PC and a console now. Heck the Xbox essentially runs a optimised version of windows already.

Remember guys, this is the same stuff both console makers promised when they announced the ps4/Xbox1 a few years back.

Their using the same exact hardware as PCs are using. It's not like the console glory days where you could buy a 200$ console that stomped a PC. Now your always going to be buying the equivalent of a low end laptop without a screen.

The big thing to take away from this announcement is cost. If you bought a Xbox1 on day one and you buy this on day one you will have spent more keeping your console current/upgraded then I've spent on my PC while at the same time having lower gfx settings and paying more for your games.

They just need to be honest with people and go ahead and make the system with PCIe slots and a 1151 cpu socket and memory sockets. Then let the customer buy the video card/mem/cpu they want. Right now your essentially tossing out the MB/mem/CPU to upgrade the video card (the only part you've needed to upgrade for gaming in the past 6+ years).

@flatovercrest: "If you bought a Xbox1 on day one and you buy this on day one you will have spent more keeping your console current/upgraded then I've spent on my PC while at the same time having lower gfx settings..."

Doubtful. Both PC and console gamers would have to perform some upgrading over that timespan in order to achieve parity. A launch Xbox One (with Kinect) cost $500 back in 2013. Considering resale value of that system and a likely price point for the Scorpio, the Xbox gamer will probably spend in the neighborhood of $850 for hardware in the 2013 - 2020 timeframe (figure 4 years per console.)

A PC gamer would spend just as much to build their initial system and keep pace with the Scorpio CPU / GPU.

Back in 2013, 1440p graphics cards were running $500+ and 4K cards were $1000+ so a system built 3 years ago which matches the projected Scorpio specs certainly wasn't more economical than the dual console alternative.

As for game prices, some console prices are higher at launch. Although retailers like Amazon and Best Buy routinely discount by 20% for pre-orders, taking console game prices down to the PC range ($48.) Meanwhile Sony and MS have been more aggressive with sale prices on digital purchases. Discounts of 50% within 6 months of a game's release are now commonplace. And Steam sales aren't what they used to be.

Also there's no PC equivalent for programs like PS+ and Live Gold which give console gamers 50-60 titles per year for just $40-60.

PlayStation will prevail and I'm not that biased because I have a 360 and a ps4 along with a 3ds. Also Xbox and PS3. Xbox is getting too expensive like all vr. There is a reason that we have this level of technology currently. I'm scared that like VR if they get too advanced it won't be affordable. I'm not going to a PC. I've played games before, but I like others prefer the games and feeling of a console. Costs matter!!!!

Unless Microsoft is willing to lose a ton of money selling this console, there is no way it will be in the affordable range for the console market. If the unit install base is small, there will be very few games that will take full advantage of the hardware other then scaling the quality of the graphics, which a PC can do anyway. Depending on the cost a PC with similar capabilities would be a better value.
Though, Microsoft could do a full reversal and sell the console cheap to grab the masses.

@lion2447: depends on what you consider affordable. Most people understand the basics of the specs and this will sell to people that would be in the market to buy a mid ranged gaming rig in the $600-800 range. I'd pay that for the convenience of a plug n play gaming rig equivalent.

I have a broken ps3, which was entirely my fault, an Xbox 360, and a ps4. I am getting the ps neo by trading in ps4. My xbox 360 has been there for a long time, but I am nostalgically connected to my PS3 which I first had years before so I will stick with the much better PlayStation.

@rabih55555: Perhaps. But with GPU power that's 4-5x the Xbox One--and 40-50% higher than PS Neo according to SDKs and other internal documents--Scorpio will easily be the most powerful console on the market.

@spartanx169x: if you are arguing for the Scoprio's ability to play games at 4K with higher settings & frame rates you are incorrect.

the GTX 1080 has 9TFLOPS and the 390X has 8.6TFLOPS. neither of these cards can do 4K with very high settings and get even a steady 60fps. and this is when paired with high end 4+ core i7s, 16+GB DDR4 RAM, and SSDs. for the Scorpio to have this type of hardware it would need to sell at >$1000.

a 6TFLOP GPU with other low-medium tiered hardware will never be able to do it unless the games have very low detail and effects with minimum textures and polygon counts.
