Microsoft Announces Project Scorpio Console

New console will deliver true 4K gaming with six teraflops of performance.

Today at Microsoft’s E3 2016 press conference, the company confirmed the existence of a new console. Named Project Scorpio, the announcement confirms rumors we’ve been reading for the past few months. Set to release in 2017, the new system will feature 8 cores, 320Gb memory bandwidth, and six teraflops of performance that will allow for true fully uncompressed 4K gaming. This suggests it will not simply be upscaled 2160p.

Like the Xbox One before it, Project Scorpio will use a SOC (system on a chip) solution, which means that it's highly likely to use high-end integrated graphics.
Like the Xbox One before it, Project Scorpio will use a SOC (system on a chip) solution, which means that it's highly likely to use high-end integrated graphics.

Microsoft also unveiled that Project Scorpio would be backwards compatible with both the Xbox One and Xbox One S, and you’ll be able to use the same peripherals and controllers with the console as well.

Now Playing: GS News Update: New Xbox Revealed at E3 2016

The 4K news is surprising, since the resolution is extremely graphically demanding on hardware and is four times as sharp as 1080p. For reference, leading $400 PC graphics cards still struggle with 2160p. To dissuade disbelief, however, one developer in the promo video stated, “They’re really going for it.”

In addition to the 4K announcement, Microsoft also stated that the console would also be capable of targeting 60fps performance as well and that it would deliver a “no-compromise” experience.

Microsoft also alluded to the fact that Project Scorpio would be used to power VR games as well, which makes sense because VR is so graphically demanding due to the fact that it requires a high resolution and fast, consistent frame rate. Bethesda's Todd Howard was in the promo video, and alluded to the idea that the VR version of Fallout 4 would be coming to the console. Considering the VR version of the game is currently only announced to support the HTC Vive virtual reality headset, this could potentially mean we'd see HTC Vive support for Project Scorpio.

No price was announced for Project Scorpio, but you can stay tuned to GameSpot for more E3 coverage as news develops.

Sounds amazing. Glad Microsoft wasn't afraid to announce their system first. But this will give Sony time to counter their move with an equally powerful machine. Don't believe the rumors about PS4 NEO specs. There is no way Sony will let them beat them spec wise. Both systems will be 4k capable. Sony will want the ideal experience for their VR headset, Morpheus.

@halvedlife: Consoles are not made in a day, they can not be changed on a spur of a moment. These devices are in the making for years (yes years). If Sony plans on shipping the Neo this year, they will have already agreed upon the chipset with the manufacturer and the manufacturer will have started the process to mass produce. Those chips will have to be produced well in advanced so they can be built into the mobo and the whole device can be built. All so that millions can be ready to be shipped at the available date. Sure small software type changes could be made (bump up clock speed like MS did with XB1).

Ms has shown their hand because if Sony wants to ship this year with Neo it is just simply to late in the game to make major changes. This is also why you should never buy a console just because it has the best graphics performance, you should by the one you like the games the most of (or buy them all and play all the games you fancy). In the end it means nothing if it is faster or slower the the Xbox as long as the consumer is happy with the product.

@halvedlife: A lot of people are forgetting Sony has tricked MS into tipping their hand early before. A supposed "leak" of the PS4's specs released some months before E3 some years back to which MS countered with their specs for the Xbox One...which turned out to be significantly weaker than the actual specs of the PS4.

Now the NEO is meant to just be a boosted PS4 and not a brand new console, so maybe what we've heard of its specs are true, but there is no way "1080p ONLY!" Sony would hear this announcement and not do anything about it. This is probably why they decided not to announce the Neo at E3. They wanted to see what MS had first.

@Barighm: If anyone copied anybody, PS4 is a ripoff of the 360 in almost every way. I swear you fanboys are delusional. Who cares what name is stamped on the most powerful box of electronics, grow up.

@Barighm: You didn't even read his post. Sony already has deals with manufactures for the Neo. It's not something they can just change on the fly without losing a lot of money or breaking contracts. So I know its hard to live with the fact that next year Sony may very well have the weakest console. I mean the NX might be more powerful than the Neo. The good news you can still have fun on your PS4. Crazy huh?

@halvedlife: Sony doesn't have the cash to lose money on its console. So Microsoft could easily out spec them if they wanted and I'm assuming that is what they are doing here. I'm guessing Microsoft will be lossing money on its consoles if sold at 599.

@stewart24: AMD has a card out now that does almost 6 TFLOPS for less than $200, so why do you think Scorpio will be $599?

@stewart24: Please stop with the MS has more money than Sony waffle! Sony has the cash, they are both giants, MS can't afford to buy out Sony and Vice Versa. Big corps don't just throw money at things because they can lol and if they do and it backfires, bthat's how subsidiaries are shut down especially if Shareholders/Investors keep losing money coz they are the one's with the most power to influence a shut down. This is a huge and ballsy gamble on MSs part, they need to win some of the console market share back and Scorpio could be the answer. I hope they compliment that power with alot of top AAA exclusives.

@letsgame82: oh I'm not saying Microsoft is buying Sony out or vise versa. I'm just saying Microsoft can afford to sell their console at a loss which they have done before. Apposed to Sony where they don't have as big as leeway when it comes to that.

@stewart24: They have the cash now. Haven't you heard? The PS4 is a roaring success, and the rest of the company is back in the black.

@misaelcarrillo: I agree. I guessing console will be $599. And the games will be 4K but it will be up scaled and not true 4K. That's still a massive leap from where we are now where the average game is at 900p

@stewart24: 1440p its a sweet spot for a console at 60 fps truly next gen, 4k.... we will see the power it will deliver sounds really nice considering the top graphic card on pc its 8teraflops, but 6 teraflops in a dedicated game system its just friking amazing... plus crossplay and crossbuy sony really need to cameup with something outstanding cus if ps4 neo its lower in performance next year they will lose the battle for sure. dam im thinking in getting an xbox scorpio just for teh crossplay. i hope they keep this way no more exclusives on windows and xbox enviorment.

Will need to be capable of above 60fps for "high quality VR". By the time Scorpio is out there will likely be new Rift and Vive models with 120hz displays

Would be great if it's capable of running existing Xbone games with updated graphics, eg run Halo 5 at a solid 1080p (or above) without the dynamic resolution and severe LOD scaling

Or run Titanfall 1 at above 792p and without the screen tearing

@Spartan_418: ya but right now you need a beefy PC to run those things. If consoles can handle them at 60 I think we are doing just fine.

@stewart24: You can't do VR at just 60fps. It needs to be higher or else there is motion sickness.

@stewart24: VR requires higher than 60fps for smooth head tracking and avoiding motion sickness. Doesn't matter if it's on PC or a console.

MS, try not to back out of anything you announce this time. Also, I'll be getting it no matter what but am very curious about pricing and a more specific release date.

@jshah500: You would think that it will come out before holyday 2017 but you never know and they might be targeting holyday 2017 for Scorpio. As for the price I can't see that going for more than $500, and they might lower the prizes of their other older Xboxes and put them at $400 hundred dollars or less so that they can sell Scorpio for less than $500 dollars.

@angrycreep: I highly doubt it'll be less than $500, given that the Xbox One (vastly underpowered compared to what they're showing here) released for $500 three years ago. If a $400 graphics card struggles with what they're promising, it's surely going to crank up the price tag - add in VR capabilities on top of everything else, I highly doubt it'll even be under $600 on release day.

@SkytheWiz1: AMD has a 5.5 TFLOP GPU out now for less than $200, so are what are you even on? The Scorpio won't be out until late next year at which point parts will be even cheaper. I'm guessing $399 for the basebase Scorpio model with 1TB HDD.

@SkytheWiz1: They are going to lose money, they always do but they are gonna lose even more if they sell it for more than $500 or $550 dollars. Now they might try to sell it for $600 but once people start complaining and the system are not selling they will do a quick prize reduction and sell it for for $550 or less.

@angrycreep:
I do agree with that - that they'll do a price reduction eventually because they want more sales, but it'll be just like Xbox One - they're going to ride the hype, get as much money as they think they can milk at that top price, and THEN lower it.

I still stand by what I said - it'll be over $500 for sure, and I'd be surprised if it wasn't over $600 (and, even at $600, I'm pretty sure they'll be selling at a loss, hoping to recoup from game sales). It's offering better hardware, it's offering better capabilities (4k, 60fps, VR), and everything required by it is expensive.

The only real question I have is: why?
The new console generation is still that - new. VERY few people are going to shell out a large amount of money, regardless of what the new console is offering, because they're not going to feel like they got their money's worth out of their current one.

So, like I said, I agree there'll be a price cut - especially because I don't see a bunch of people shelling out another huge amount of money for a rig that would make their less than three year old (right now) console obsolete. Beyond a VERY small portion of Xbox One owners, the only other people who would buy this are PS4 players (most of which hate Xbox/Microsoft to begin with) and people who haven't bought consoles (who will likely be dissuaded by the high price tag).

The market's not entirely predictable, but this is a gamble that I wouldn't have taken if I were in Microsoft's shoes.

@stewart24: How much is the Elite Xbox? That's right is more than $400 dollars. I wasn't clear with what I wrote but I was referring to the Elite Xbox One that's still going for more than $400 dollars. I just got home so i haven't seen the Microsoft press conference yet so i don't know what they said in there but now that you saying it yeah that's what i thought it will be for the new console holyday 2017.
