Microsoft Announces Project Scorpio Console

New console will deliver true 4K gaming with six teraflops of performance.

Today at Microsoft’s E3 2016 press conference, the company confirmed the existence of a new console. Named Project Scorpio, the announcement confirms rumors we’ve been reading for the past few months. Set to release in 2017, the new system will feature 8 cores, 320Gb memory bandwidth, and six teraflops of performance that will allow for true fully uncompressed 4K gaming. This suggests it will not simply be upscaled 2160p.

Like the Xbox One before it, Project Scorpio will use a SOC (system on a chip) solution, which means that it's highly likely to use high-end integrated graphics.
Like the Xbox One before it, Project Scorpio will use a SOC (system on a chip) solution, which means that it's highly likely to use high-end integrated graphics.

Microsoft also unveiled that Project Scorpio would be backwards compatible with both the Xbox One and Xbox One S, and you’ll be able to use the same peripherals and controllers with the console as well.

Now Playing: GS News Update: New Xbox Revealed at E3 2016

The 4K news is surprising, since the resolution is extremely graphically demanding on hardware and is four times as sharp as 1080p. For reference, leading $400 PC graphics cards still struggle with 2160p. To dissuade disbelief, however, one developer in the promo video stated, “They’re really going for it.”

In addition to the 4K announcement, Microsoft also stated that the console would also be capable of targeting 60fps performance as well and that it would deliver a “no-compromise” experience.

Microsoft also alluded to the fact that Project Scorpio would be used to power VR games as well, which makes sense because VR is so graphically demanding due to the fact that it requires a high resolution and fast, consistent frame rate. Bethesda's Todd Howard was in the promo video, and alluded to the idea that the VR version of Fallout 4 would be coming to the console. Considering the VR version of the game is currently only announced to support the HTC Vive virtual reality headset, this could potentially mean we'd see HTC Vive support for Project Scorpio.

No price was announced for Project Scorpio, but you can stay tuned to GameSpot for more E3 coverage as news develops.

The Xbox one isn't even 3 years old yet, and we'Re already talking next gen.

I mean, there's going to be speculation, but the fact they're being this specific really invites little confidence at all in the current gen. As it shouldn't, since consoles in the current generation have been abysmal.

It will take something magical like this to get consoles back on track, but I'm highly suspicious that it will turn out this well. Especially when the words are coming from the XBOX team.

@Richardthe3rd: This is likely to come with a high end sticker price that will put it out of reach for a big part of the market. The original Xbox One will still have an important role to play.

@Richardthe3rd

MS did the same thing with the Original Xbox to the Xbox 360- 2001-2005, 4 year life cycle.

@Richardthe3rd: It's not next-gen. Understand that. The way of generational consoles are going away....at least for Xbox it is. For Sony, who knows.

@penkowalski: Then I'm ok with that, because they're basically becoming Microsoft's version of the Steambox.

I'm glad they're finally realizing that this is most certainly the most reasonable path for them to follow.

@Moonco: That's what I'm worried about! Microsofts track record with hardware (especially with the 360 and overheating) is terrible, most likely another power brick and expensive parts to keep it cool, which leaves me to believe that the Scorpio will not be cheap or MS might suprise us and gamble on a huge loss on each sale of the Scorpio. It will probably make more sense once full specs are announced. I just hope they didn't rush this kind of power in a console without extensive tests and then end up losing money on overheating Scorpios warranties after launch.

I actually think that this was kind of a silly error for a console that's being released in 2017. If you're hoping that people will buy the new Xbox One S, this completely shoots any new momentum in the foot because people will wait for the new console. I do not get the announcement, it only helps Sony spec out what they need to compare with and further reinforces Sony's current PS4 as the undisputed leader for the next year and half....I'm quite baffled. Maybe Phil thought that it would eventually leak out anyways, so by making it part of their E3 it's better than not announcing it...? I don't see how anyone would want to buy the new Xbox One S with knowing it's replacement is coming in a year...

@Gatorjosh14: most people don't have 4k t.v's so this is not a big deal. the console will be expensive and the t.v's are really expensive still. so having a higher end console and lower end console makes since.

They kinda just released exactly what the rumors were. Wish they said more details about the cpu, or RAM. Everyone is kinda just looking at the GPUs 6 Tera flops, which I believe you can get for PC right now for $200. 18 months from now is a long time the way tech is dropping in price. I'd go out on a limb and say a prebuilt PC in 18 months would probably easily match the performance for the same price (unless it's some really low price). Nice to see MS doing a 180 though finally. I wish they could of just bumped the specs up one the slim, to at least achieve 1080/60 on all games, even if it was $100 more. Seems pointless to get one when a much better one will release a year later.

@rihoko_inverse: I think he meant the graphics card alone is 200 not the whole PC. If you really go cheap on the rest you can probably make it with about 500.
This Scorpio thing will probably be around the same price of the ps4 neo = they will sell it on a loss as usual.

So technically they announced 2 consoles a slim X1 and an all new 1

So what if the neo is sonys slim and they have something else lined up?

I just can't see them letting project Scorpio go without any competition

I expect to see a power house PlayStation in the next yr or 2 to rival project Scorpio and will possibly be even more powerful

You know it will happen

@angryguy77: yes and no. Enjoyment can be greatly enhanced when a game goes from 30fps to 60. Take the division. On Xbox right now it's at 30. Go to PC and the game is night and day better. Same game but visually easier to enjoy. Colors look better and the game doesn't have to struggle to preform.

All that power and no physical BC in sight. Makes you question why even bother with this generation of gimped out PCs. They can't seem to do anything special these days to differentiate themselves from real PCs.

Well it is basically between a 980ti and a GTX1070 neither of which would be considered 4k capable. If the 980ti could play some games at 4k that a mid range PC from 3 years ago can play at 1080p (essentially a Ps4 or XB1) then some real 4k gaming could be possible with Scorpio, but most will be rendered at less than that then upscaled I think, even though a console title can be better optimized than a PC title.

@sladey: Will it be able to play a newly released AAA title the same way a GTX1080 or SLI/Crossfire machine can render it in 4k? Hell no. If you think of the XB1 as a 3 year old PC that was midrange at best 3 years ago (which it is) then yeah some stuff that the XB1 does at 1080p/720p should be able to work @ 4k using well optimized 6 teraflops worth of power. Other titles will be tweaked via quality settings and up rezzing to give 4k. Either way it is not the 4k that a PC user might be used to I agree.

From numbers to crawlies? Xbox One to Xbox Scorpio... Whats next, Xbox Salamando? Also, they already had Xbox 360, why they went all the way back to number 1 and now switching to crawlies? Isn't Scorpio kinda slaw arachnid? They shoulda change to Salamando, since its faster than it's predecessors and doesn't suck so bad...

@reanor2: the crawlie thing is called a scorpion... which is also poisonous and considered by some to be a sign of power / danger as well.

also i would be surprised if the console actually launches with the name xbox scorpio.. especially since the article doesn't ever refer to it as that, it's "project scorpio" and usually they don't keep the "project" name..

sony established a pattern with the playstation, playstation 2, 3, 4.... then "neo"

nintendo: wii > wii u, horrible name....

3ds, 3ds xl, "new 3ds"... what happens when they do another updated version? newER 3ds? :)

of all the console makers, i think sega is the only one that didn't have poorly named consoles (IF sony sticks with neo).. genesis, saturn, dreamcast.

not really defending micrsofts naming scheme, it doesn't make sense on their consoles or versions of windows.

@the-games-masta: I think Sony already solidied the NEO specs and are in production. MS probably knows this and is pulling a fast one on Sony.

This system is essentially the XB2. It sounds like its a full generation ahead of XB1.

@Lamesy: Yeah, that was sneaky, I like it. MS just won a new fan. I was planning on skipping XB1 since I have a PS4, but a full 4K system that costs over 700 is too much for me to let pass. I'm gonna get this on day one. Since I have a 4K TV, this will double as my 4K Bluray player.
