Microsoft Announces Project Scorpio Console

New console will deliver true 4K gaming with six teraflops of performance.

Today at Microsoft’s E3 2016 press conference, the company confirmed the existence of a new console. Named Project Scorpio, the announcement confirms rumors we’ve been reading for the past few months. Set to release in 2017, the new system will feature 8 cores, 320Gb memory bandwidth, and six teraflops of performance that will allow for true fully uncompressed 4K gaming. This suggests it will not simply be upscaled 2160p.

Like the Xbox One before it, Project Scorpio will use a SOC (system on a chip) solution, which means that it's highly likely to use high-end integrated graphics.
Like the Xbox One before it, Project Scorpio will use a SOC (system on a chip) solution, which means that it's highly likely to use high-end integrated graphics.

Microsoft also unveiled that Project Scorpio would be backwards compatible with both the Xbox One and Xbox One S, and you’ll be able to use the same peripherals and controllers with the console as well.

Now Playing: GS News Update: New Xbox Revealed at E3 2016

The 4K news is surprising, since the resolution is extremely graphically demanding on hardware and is four times as sharp as 1080p. For reference, leading $400 PC graphics cards still struggle with 2160p. To dissuade disbelief, however, one developer in the promo video stated, “They’re really going for it.”

In addition to the 4K announcement, Microsoft also stated that the console would also be capable of targeting 60fps performance as well and that it would deliver a “no-compromise” experience.

Microsoft also alluded to the fact that Project Scorpio would be used to power VR games as well, which makes sense because VR is so graphically demanding due to the fact that it requires a high resolution and fast, consistent frame rate. Bethesda's Todd Howard was in the promo video, and alluded to the idea that the VR version of Fallout 4 would be coming to the console. Considering the VR version of the game is currently only announced to support the HTC Vive virtual reality headset, this could potentially mean we'd see HTC Vive support for Project Scorpio.

No price was announced for Project Scorpio, but you can stay tuned to GameSpot for more E3 coverage as news develops.

GTX 1070 has 6,5 teraflops of power and 256GB Bandwith and costs 379 dolars... GTX 1080 has 9 teraflops of power and 320GB Bandwith and costs 599 dolars... the Scorpion has 6 teraflops and 320GB Bandwith... if nothing changes the GTX 1070 is more powerfull, but still weaker in higher resolutions... if the new console costs 600 dolares that will be one of the biggest evolutions of gaming and technology of all time... you cannot build a system with a GTX 1070 for less of 1000 dolars... if a console will cost 600 dolares that will be a a damn evolution...

@rogerice1:

I agree. It may not be the absolute cutting edge but it's incredible value for money. It sort of makes buying a high end PC seem like insanity with all the diminishing returns involved. It's just not worth it. The Scorpio is looking like a very attractive piece of kit so Sony desperately need to match it.

@gagula94: It would be a GTX 1160 by next year $200-250. There are sites that sell legit windows keys for $20-30. Non K CPUs come with a cooler. M/K can be had for $10-15. You can buy good cases for $30-40. Motherboards in the H or B series chipsets are sub $90.

@JJMikhail: my brother just bought one last week for $600.

They are getting cheaper now. If this system is as powerful as they are saying and it doesn't cost $700 then I would consider picking one up even if I trade in the one

@JJMikhail: 4K TV's are dropping in price pretty quickly, and this is a year and a half out. 4K TVs will probably be in the $400-1000 range by Holiday 2017.

That said, you don't have to get the best TV right away, you can get the console in 2017, and the TV in 2018, or the flip that and get the TV first.

@suicidesn0wman: Why would you buy a 4K console and continue playing it at 1080p? Literally the entire point of the upgrade is 4K. If you can't accommodate that then it is a total waste of money.

You may as well wait till you can afford both by which time both will have dropped in price even further.

This isn't like PC where playing at 1080p will give you extra frames per second. The frames will be locked no matter what resolution you output at.

The NX and PS Neo aren't even out yet and this announcement makes them look like Etch-a-Sketches. The fact that apparently everything (hardware and software) from xbox1 will be backwards compatible with Scorpio is pretty cool, too. This is the first time in over 15 years that I have been excited about a console.

All in 1 chips are always crap. They should have done a dedicated CPU and GPU. 6 TFlops is stone age... Maxwell hit that already. Pascal exceeds this. That's not even factoring in the vastly superior Intel CPU's.

@Truth_Hurts_U: ya man, 4 cylinder cars suck. Stupid Honda Civic / Toyota Camry (insert other 4 cly car) is so slow compared to the v12 lamborghini aventador. That is not even factoring in the vastly superior handling, and build quality.

Before making such a stupid comment you have to understand the situation and limitations to each situation. Consoles manufacturers must produce a product that is cheap (history proves consoles over 499 don't sell well), has a low wattage usage, and doesn't produce too much heat. What is the combined wattage req. for the Pascal and the superior Intel CPU? What would the cost be of just those two components? How much heat does each one produce?

And before you start quoting prices of components don't forget the custom made enclosure, custom made circulation, wireless remote receiver, baked in security, power supply, cables, controller.

Yes you can clearly make a more powerful PC, just as much as someone can buy a faster vehicle than a Honda, but power and speed are not always what is important to people.

@Truth_Hurts_U: You're comparing a $700 GPU to a console that will likely cost less than $700. Not very many console gamers are itching to spend $1000+ on console.

Seeing as nVidia's 10XX line of GPU's can quite easely do 4k @ 30 fps and that on a PC, wich is an less optimised system, doing a 4K console in 2017 is quite doable.

As for the price, I am willing to bet a pricepoint of around 600$ is whats to be expected. This even moreso due to the system being fully backwards compatible with the Xbone (-S), wich drives the price up even more.

I hope that Sony and Nintendo will both also deliver a new console thats 4K compatible and all and give us gamers a real next-gen instead of the current lousy excuse. Because buying a console of this generation isn't worth the money really when you can buy a GPU wich in itself is more powerfull then a whole console.

@Jimzeel: Backwards compatibility with Xbox One games doesn't necessarily mean added cost, just means the new console has the same (scaled up) architecture.

@Jimzeel: Yeah, sure, the GPU is more powerful, but you're still missing the MOBO, processor, hard drive, power supply, etc.

At least with the console, once you buy it...you're done.

WOW looks like the "PC Master Race" might soon become the peasants ;D Project Scorpio wouldn't have been possible without Playstation fanboys or digital foundry lol If they can get the pricing right and a variety of AAA quality exclusives, this could do very well and help Xbox this gen.

@Barighm: I know and it's a shame they are going that route (but I think needed to because of X1 market share in the console division) but atleast it shuts up some PC gamers who try to convince everyone that the majority of them game in 4K when some of us know it's BS. When both Neo and Scorpio are released, "PC master race" will be reaching to win an argument.

@jokeyjoey2014: And how many PC gamers have that kind of high end set up? We know majority of Steam players game in 1080p 60fps or less or not everyone has 11 teraflops or the GTX 1080. Consoles might be cheaper but we get good value per buck! You might have 11 teraflops in your PC but you are not guaranteed a stable run on a game, you have to tweak or lower settings. A console with less power can almost perform as well as a high end PC because devs don't make games for a specific set up, so you could have a powerful PC but still get shit returns on how your game runs #facts and I don't need to be a PC expert to know this.

Microsoft is blowing steam up our asses. Let's reflect on some numbers here.. The GTX 980 Ti almost hits 6 Tflops. That card can't play games at 4k 60 FPS UNLESS settings are turned town to medium. So I highly doubt the Scorpio can do it unless the games end up sacrificing visual detail for resolution and framerate. Which IMO is fucking STUPID. Why all the obsession of 4k? 1440p looks pretty awesome. That should be the next logical step.

Also, if this is all true, this Xbox is going to be stupid expensive. I'm willing to bet a $600-$800 price tag and MS will STILL be losing money on every console sold.

@Rushaoz: While I agree the whole 4K hype is overrated marketing non-sense, it's incorrect to compare a PC GPU to a console. No PC game is made with the expectation of 6 TFLOP performance, even high end games only go as far as GTX 700 series in mind. I'm sure a game designed specifically for a 980 Ti can run 4k/60fps.

@Rushaoz: The XB1 (and PS4) were underpowered when they were released years ago. Even the 980ti can play many titles at 4k that a mid-range PC could play @ 720-1080p when the last gen of consoles were released (with some lower quality setting probably). So to play XB1 titles at 4k is the same as playing a game title that a midrange PC from 3 years ago could play at 1080p on a modern high end PC (980Ti or better).

@Spartan_418: That's because the PS4 wasn't a $700 PC. It had the internals equal to a lower midrange 2012 gaming PC. That's why they made a profit out of it. The tech was outdated right from the jump.

That being said if what Microsoft is saying holds true, this will be the most powerful console to date when compared to PC hardware released in the same generation.. 6 Tflops is GTX 980Ti territory. Which is why I have my doubts. This is gonna be one expensive console.

@Rushaoz: The price will be interesting - before the official announcement rumors were already around that MS was willing to take a hit with the new console to try and regain some of the market - but that was just a rumor.

Another thing to keep in mind is you are comparing / thinking of Nvidia. Obviously the chip will be from AMD which will be considerably less than Nvidia.
