Microsoft prices Kinect at $150

Software giant confirms retailers' price point as it starts taking preorders through its own online storefront.

Kinect is being offered at $149.99 by Microsoft, which has started taking direct preorders for the Xbox 360's new motion-sensing accessory. This confirms listings noticed last week at Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, and Walmart that Microsoft had previously suggested were speculative.

Speaking to the Xbox will soon no longer be limited to expletives at RRODs.
Speaking to the Xbox will soon no longer be limited to expletives at RRODs.

As recently as yesterday, Microsoft representatives were insisting that all prices on retailer Web sites were "placeholders". Microsoft's retail listing for Kinect does note that preorders are covered by the site's "Pre-Order Price Guarantee" so if the price is changed before launch, those preordering would pay the lowest price at which it was available during the preorder period.

Kinect--pronounced "connect"-- allows gamers to interact with the Xbox without using a controller. Instead, the stereo cameras and microphones allow the use of voice- and gesture-based commands. This works both in-game and for the Xbox menu system, as well as for music and video playback, Microsoft claims.

The motion-sensing peripheral, formally named and dated at E3 last week was first shown off at E3 2009 under the codename Natal. So far, 15 titles have been confirmed for launch, among them first-party minigame collections, third-party fitness titles, and a new Sonic The Hedgehog game. Further support after launch is promised by Lucasarts, Q? Entertainment, THQ, and more.

Contacted by GameSpot UK, Microsoft did not comment on EU pricing, simply saying that "Kinect will launch in Europe, the Middle East and Africa in November 2010."

I wouldnt pick this up at all, if you have a Wii, stick with the Wii, this is just a tag on feature it seems. I bet it will be just like the eye toy from the ps2 days, just cheesy games and what not.

@MoonMarvel I sense hate. First, the Kinect will support 2 players at launch, but it's software based, so that number could easily increase. You were right, but only by a hair, and since eyetoy supports that many players, eventually Natal will too. Second, NOBODY plays the Wii anymore without MotionPlus or the Nunchuk, so the full cost is still around 400 dollars for the full setup.

Third, anybody that wants to play a hardcore game on the PS3 with the move controller will need both pieces. Nobody is going to use the awkwardly balanced DualShock in one hand, and we've all seen how important the nunchuk is on the Wii. Fourth, the minimum price 360 has been 200 dollars for almost a year now, and it was announced at E3 that there WILL be a second SKU of the Xbox 360 S retailing at 200 dollars, hopefully with a hard drive.

Kinect seems like cool tech, but far too kiddy and gimmicky for my taste. Looks like one of those things you try out in Best Buy for 2 minutes, say "wow", and tell your friends to buy so you don't have to waste the money.

anyone thinks that this will fail because its 150 bucks is just fooling theirselvs. kinect is only 50 bucks more then wii fit. people buy up rock band and guitar hero bundles for over 150 bucks every year. this is something new people will line up in droves to buy this. so if you wabnt one this year. you better pre-order now. or be forced to buy off ebay in december

@1penance1 Woooooooooooooooooow. Way to go on completely trying to twist my words around. Never did I say anywhere that Games are not important. I simply stated that of course there isn't going to be any AAA titles built STRICTLY for Kinect at launch. Its actually going to take time, because its a new form of technology that game Developers will be working with. You brought up LBP2, Killzone 3, ect and how they are going to work well with PS3's move, to which I stated, they may be good for move, But they are games that were starting to be developed long before the Move was officially announced and that for LPb2 and Killzon 3 you don't HAVE to use Move to play them, becuase they are going to be built for use with regular controllers as well. Where exactly did you see me write that games don't matter? I also pointed out that a good majority of PS3 and 360 owners have bashed The Wii and Wii owners over the last few years and say that its dumb to play a game where you have to wail you're arms around like a mad man and how that control scheme only caters to the casual gamer, to which I pointed out again, that pretty much, thast what Ps3 and 360 owners are going to be doing very soon and they are very excited about it....which is wailing there arms around like mad men for their controllers.

Again lets just wait and see. I hope this whole motion 3D thing doesn't cause developers to skimp-out on the real things that matter. (Gameplay)

I would be surprised if there were any high profile games that required the Kinect to control them. Such as Gears or Halo. I'm sure there will be a controller option. Either way I think I'll pass.

@swamptick i don't know about, that alot of 360 owners i talk to on ign and game informer web sites are pissed about the price. I may not have worked in the game industry but having owned a business for 15 years i have some retail experience. in an economy with a near 10% unemployment rate families are looking for cheaper alternatives to have fun. releasing a pricey add on for a system they may or may not have doesn't seem like a good idea. i would definitely buy kinect for $99 with a game included but the current price is too much for me. the economy is tough right now and if parents see a wii for $199 and kinect by itself for $149 which do you think they'll choose especially if they don't have a 360. move is also over priced but this is a microsoft story not a sony one so who cares about it. i also think people are arguing about this because unlike sony with move microsoft bet their future on kinect so their are alot of 360 owners who are concerned myself included. so just because a person says something negative about kinect doesn't make them a hater they may be just concerned about microsoft's future.

None of these prices are firm. Seriously, even the Microsoft item page (linked to on this article) has "pricing is not final... subject to change" Personally, I'm getting this when it comes out. I'll still play CoD, Reach, and all the others with a controller, but the tech is cool as sh!t! We use the 360 pretty much constantly, and I can see getting a lot of functionality in the dashboards and Netflix. Necessary? No. But neither are a lot of other gizmo's I've gotten way earlier than I maybe should have...

Cannot see why anyone who make such a fuss and hit out at Microsoft (cheaply may I add)? This is an 'optional' add-on to your Xbox, we are still going to get games that allow us to use a Controller, don't like it don't buy it, again why the fuss? It's new, something different for everyone to enjoy, any comparisons to the Wii is quite laughable, since when was face and voice recognition used in any Computer console that actually works? Wii was just using sensors to move things on the screen, the future with later projects after Kinect is going to incredible and its good to reach out to all markets.

@Incubus420 I couldn't agree with you more this kinect thing is not my thing. Also I don't think were ready for controllerless gaming yet. (this whole Kinect thing is just M$ trying to beat sony/nintendo to the punch, it's going to punch them(M$) in the face. They should have sold this kinect thing for $100 and included a bundle with games.

I'm going to pass on this. I'll have a controller without motion control anyday, especially when i don't have to pay lots of money. I just hate this and stand by my position that motion control is a gimmick that we can do without. Sure it's nice and all, but everyone doing it just because they saw the wii's sales, i'll pass.

This looks amazing, but $150 is pretty steep. I was so stoked for it when they told us it was going to be only $50 but now i'm not sure if i'm going to get it or not. Still looks cool, but god, you could get a wii for $150...

PS3 fanboy right here and I must say I thought this was cool. However there is no way I would pay more then $50 for this thing. All it will do is collect dust just like my wii. I do not see how this can go any further then a few workout games and other puzzle games. The motions didn't look as though it was 1 to 1. Now the Ps Move is a smart move because everyone knows how and what to expect from a controller set up simlar to the wii. Also developers that are developing for the wii can now sell for both systems (wii and Ps3) A great example of this is the Dead Rising shooter that will be released on PS3. While the Natal is a great concept I just don't think any hard core gamers are going to use it for watching movies or even video chatting with other gamers. Also if you can't use the thing while you are sitting down then you can forget kids in a dorm using it. My dorm room was big enough for me a bed and some clothes. I am interested to see how this all works out.

How is the xbox service better? we dont have an internet browser, no flash videos.. I often wonder what the service provides, apart from them 2 idiots on sentuamessage who I think are not worth the money in subscriptions.. our interactive service with LIVE is so limited compared to playstation yet we have to pay for this... hell when a New DLC comes out it takes a good hour to download 300mb when my internet connection can download 1GB in 10. the online servers are not better because there are no servers, its mainly hosted by us and our bandwidth.. I wouldnt preorder something that is gonna be a gimmick,, they talk about hardcore gamers but all i have seen is family friendly entertainment... Im sorry but im gonna hold horses until something really good for this makes me want to buy it and not the fact that its stupidly hyped!

Is wondering why real gamers hate this casual gaming crap??? The answer is that the more money game companies put toward casual games, the less money they put toward real/hardcore games. The game companies are no longer interested in pleasing their fans, they want to attract millions of little kids and elderly to buy their over-priced accessories to use on mini-games and stuff that holds our attention for about 3 minutes.

@MoonMarvel Microsoft per month/per 3 month subscription options are ridiculously over-priced. 1 month is $8. If you pay like that you'll spend $96 a year for XBL Gold. Also, why should I need to pay for all these services Microsoft offers such as 1vs100 if I'm not going to use that service? I only want to play online multiplayer I don't see why I should pay more than $1/month for this service only, especially when I get it for free elsewhere. And before you give me the "XBL is soooo much better" argument, those features that are "better" on the service could be bundled into the higher-level subscriptions and only basic multiplayer functions available for the lower-level.

@Trogeton I dont think its the knowing of what all it can do, its the knowing of what it cant do. You cant play a FPS, or any other similar game that requires fast reaction time. So technically its a Wii built into the 360 peripheral that has better graphics. Yes its supposed to attract interest for the family, which is all good, but MS just got on board to late in the game. Families that want a family game unit most likely have a Wii system already, and most families these days are strapped for cash, so why would they buy another system.

For all the info about not needing a controller with this thing and what I want to do with it is use it with one. One of the bigger pains about the Wii is how hard it is to use the nunchuck compared a regular controller, making it hard to use for precise moving (see SSBB). As an example of what I mean, take a FPS, wouldn't it be nice to have a melee attack by pushing the controller at the screen rather then taking your thumb off the second stick. This is just a basic idea but I'm sure there's more that this could be used a lot as an alternative way to play a lot of games

for all of you haters out there when do the best titles for a console tend to come out? it rarely happens in the first year or so of its release do you know why? its because developers don't know its potential so they can't use its potential until afters seeing how it goes for the first year or so

This thing is being pre-ordered like crazy, so this price is set in stone now... it's sad really because if people held out for a while and yes "voted with their dollars", MS would have lowered the price out of necesity, instead people are flocking to it like moths to a flame. Oh well maybe they will put out some really good games, who knows. I am definitely interested in Child of Eden, but one potentially awesome game isn't enough to get me to buy this.

I think the price is relatively fair. If you think about it, the device essentially creates an entirely new console! It's not just an accessory that supplements existing control types, it's a completely new control scheme, which means completely original and different games that otherwise wouldn't be possible without it and isn't that why we buy new consoles? Yeah sure it seems like shovelware at launch, that's just Microsoft's effort to get their foot in the door the same time as Sony, which gave developers too little time to create true core titles..this may be it's demise but I hope not! I think we'll see some really amazing games coming from this if we just give it some time.

@Philly1UPer So you're saying that the games arent really important and that the main focus here is the milestone of movement being... milestoned? Thats like giving someone a pen without ink, its useless. But i think that the games are more important than the motion. Look how far we have gone with just buttons. Im just waiting for the day where motion controling will enhance games, not hinder them. Like how when a game comes out multiplatform and the wii always had to have less enemies becuz of the limits of the user. But buttons will help the Move, that way if it gets too intense, then we can start using buttons. But Kinect is going to have some killer ninja games, throwing, jumping, swordfighting, but how are you going to run? Oh well, time will tell. Peace out 16 pages of people who cant get along! Lol thats sad

@1penance1 I'll agree with you there, But I will say, bashing something that isn't even out yet, and not being giving proper time with developers to be fully experimented with ether shouldn't be something you should shun right away ether. Of course its not going to have a solid AAA title at launch, but nether is the PS3 move, Yeah, Killzone 3 will be support it, and so with LBP2, but don't forget, those are games that were being developed before Move was even officially announced, So I do see those games, along with future 360 games being able to support both their new controller setups along with the old ones. I do think its funny that alot of PS3 and 360 owners Bash Nintendo and the Wii and for people always waving their arms around while holding two items in there hands, But they don't have anything negative to say about the gaming their respected PS3's and 360's will be doing soon...which is waving their arms around.

Unless I see some solid third party games lineup for this device there is no way I am buying this thing. Before E3 I really thought that this Kinect would be a game changer but after Microsofts horrid E3 presentation all my hopes went down the drain. Even though SONY Move isnt something brand new atleast it can be implemented on core games like SOCOM, KILZZONE 3,etc.

@Philly1UPer I guess u can say im a fan boy, but I also have 360 too and Move is more precise than Kinect when it comes to the hands. I admit that the Move is like a suped up wii mote with Wii Motion Multiply, but it has buttons which u NEED to play shooters like, oh i dont know, MW2, BFBC2, KZ3 (PS3 only), Borderlands, i can go all day. Not to mention that ps3 has Little Big Planet 2 which is like the Nuke of gaming, so until we see a shooting game with Kinect, my light bulb on a stick is looking awesome. Which leads me to ask, how many shooters have you played lately? Probly not many seeing as how you have a ninja with a tiara as ur avatar. And even if u have been, i like to see u play them with Kinect. I may be a fan of both systems, but at least im open minded. Come on bro, dont knock stuff until you try it. And i also admit that Kinect does look better than Move right now, but the no shooting thing is killing me, not with a gun tho, but with little red balls you slap at

Is anyone else completely amused at the amount of attention Sony fans are giving this? It says alot about how they really feel. Still, I appreciate the fact that they can't stop talking about Kinect whereas Xbox 360 owners just don't seem to care about WiiMove. I'm sorry, did I say WiiMove? I meant Move. It's hard to tell those two apart. At any rate, Kinect is PACKED with tech that Sony could NEVER innovate. Meanwhile, Kinect has FULL infrared motion sensing, full body scan, full object scan, is cheaper per player, has voice recognition, facial recognition and MUCH much more. Be patient with the Sony fans trolling and giving thumbs down though. Their obsession with coming to Kinect topics is not going to fade anytime soon. They just can't handle how much better this product is. It's KILLING them so they feel the need to come over here and post erroneous information or talk about how Kinect isn't worth it. Kinect is amazing. It is currently #1 in pre-order sales. Sony WiiMove conversely is way, way WAY down the list at a mere 41st. Nintendo is still selling more Wiimotes on pre-order than Sony can manage. Funny.....amazing....and true. We thank you for your interest in Microsoft Kinect! (Ever go to the Sony Move forums? There ARE no Microsoft fans there trolling. Know what Sony fans are talking about? They are talking about KINECT on the Move forums! Lol. Envy can bring out the worst in the insecure)
