Microsoft has reportedly shut down its Vancouver game studio, according to a Kotaku report and various Twitter posts from Microsoft Game Studios Vancouver employees.

Microsoft has reportedly shut down its Vancouver studio.
Microsoft has reportedly shut down its Vancouver studio.

Citing an anonymous tip-off, the Kotaku report pointed to the Facebook page of Vancouver innovation initiative Can We Do It? which reported: "We've just gotten word that the entire studio at Microsoft Games Studios on 840 Cambie has been laid off. 35 people in total. This is nuts. We'll update with more when we can."

In May last year, it was reported that the Microsoft Vancouver studio was involved in developing a big-budget AAA shooter for the Kinect.

The studio's website is still operational, listing several job openings. The site's opening blurb reads: "MGS Vancouver is building a world-class development team in Vancouver, BC, Canada, dedicated to making games for 'core' gamers."

Earlier this month, Capcom enacted a round of layoffs at its Vancouver studio, while Rockstar announced that it would be moving its Vancouver team to a new studio in Toronto.

[UPDATE] A Microsoft spokesperson told GameSpot the publisher is not shutting down the Vancouver studio completely, but will be stopping development on two projects. According to the spokesperson, the team affected by this move is "small." The full statement reads:

"Microsoft Studios has decided to end development on Microsoft Flight and Project Columbia. As a result of this action, some positions within the development teams have been eliminated. Microsoft human resources is working with the affected individuals to find new roles within the company."

"Microsoft Studios is invested in British Columbia and still has several teams, both in Vancouver and Victoria, which will continue to produce the best entertainment and gaming experiences possible."

Vancouver is dying, It is one of North Americas most expensive places to live. So the developers have to move to other places, where the cost of doing business is cheaper. Hopefully the people will find work within the industry soon. World economy not doing well. Videogame companies are the first to go as people cut spending on entertainment.

Is Vancouver an expensive city? I don't really see a reason for shutting down so many studios in the city besides it being too expensive. The companies that did that certainly aren't having finantial problems and I assume that it isn't a coincidence that those things happened in the same place.

@AndCarlsen Companies don't wait until they have financial problems to cut. Look at giant corporations, there are cases when they feel as if their earnings are going to be weak, they preemptively cut 10,000 workers.

Oh and yes, Vancouver is ridiculously expensive. The prices are higher then here for the same items but if you factor that their money is worth the same as USD then it's even more expensive.

I don't get the hype over this, game studios are shut down all the time when the game becomes vaporware or is released and large dev teams are no longer needed.

It sounds like this was the case here too, the game wasn't going anywhere so they laid off some developers. It's not like this is unique to Microsoft, this stuff happens often. Same thing happened when COD released, and again when BF3 released, etc, etc

It's pretty normal in the game industry as a developer to change projects. You get 'laid off" of one project and then hired onto another project. Which is exactly what sounds like is happening in the above article.

Of course they did. Why do they need developers when they aren't interested in making games?

@Shame-usBlackley I'm sorry but are you implying that Microsoft has no interest in making games? Do you really think that? Microsoft Flight was going to be Free to Play any ways... they obviously seen the light as far as the kinetic goes... meaning we knew it sucked and now they know it sucks. If they are ready to give up on it... its not a bad thing for their next console that was suppose to be very Kinetic centric.

@DemannameD What other assumption could I draw? They have been in the game space for over a decade now and they have fewer studios and franchises than ever before. And they opted to spend good money on a piece of shlt that is better served for turning digital pages than it is for playing games. Also, their E3 conference was abysmal... nothing new, and a bunch of non-gaming trash like Nike, Bing, and the like. They just suck now, sorry.

The only really baffling thing is why they'd lay off a team making a crappy Kinect game. I mean, only good games should be cancelled, sold off, or let go, and since Kinect sucks as a controller, you'd think any piece of trash made for the flail crowd would be safe...

I guess they aren't interested in making 'core' games anymore. This is news now? I thought this was certifiable fact when Kinect became their focus.

@Namgis So true. Microsoft is an embarrassment now. I see them marketing to these chumptards who wanna pinwheel their arms and jump around in front of the television, and I realize -- man, this system just isn't for someone like me anymore.

@Shame-usBlackley

I also agree. The ONLY reason why I got a 360 in the first place was because of the huge 3rd party support that the Wii didn't get & that there were multiplats that are more superior on 360 than PS3.

Next gen, I'm just going to stick with the Wii U (& probably PS4).

"...a big-budget AAA shooter for Kinect". No such thing. Never has been and never will be.

"...dedicated to making games for 'core' gamers". Not when you're working with Kinect.
