Microsoft to start $10 hits program

Popular Xbox titles to sell for $9.99; Microsoft confirms 16 participating games in program's "first wave."

Greatest Hits, Player's Choice, Platinum Hits… Whatever the program is called, each current-generation system has a discount program where older, popular games see their shelf lives extended, usually with the help of $20 price tags. While the discounting usually stops there, Microsoft today announced a new Best of Platinum Hits program that will push the price of admission for 16 of its 100-plus Platinum Hits titles down to $9.99. The new prices are set to take effect this month.

The "first wave" of games in the program follows:

Counterstrike - Microsoft Game Studios
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind - Bethesda Softworks
Enter the Matrix - Atari
Fuzion Frenzy - Microsoft Game Studios
MechAssault - Microsoft Game Studios
Project Gotham Racing 2 - Microsoft Game Studios
Shrek 2 - Activision
Soul Calibur II - Namco
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon - Ubisoft
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Island Thunder - Ubisoft
Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six 3 - Ubisoft
Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow - Ubisoft
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell - Ubisoft
Tony Hawk's Underground - Activision
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 - Activision
True Crime: Streets of LA - Activision

I just wish I had more time in a day - to take advantage of one or two of these. Maybe I should just stop playing games on three different consoles

YAY!!! Now I still won't buy such great games as 'Enter the Matrix ' and 'Fuzion Frenzy' and ' Counter Strike' for the soon to outdated x-box for only $10. Thanks Microsoft.

This is cool. Alot of people will now get to play great games. Smart move by MS. I'm guessing they want to attract some non gamers that are left.

Most of those games suck. Fusion Fenzy, Mech Assult, and Elder Scrolls are the only good games but who doesn't have those by now anyway?

This is actually pretty awesome. I'm impressed with MS... I'm not sure why they decided to start this program (did the games in the new $10 program not sell well enough at the $20 level? is this just to get rid of current-gen inventory?), but whatever their reasons, I applaud them. I'm not a fan- nor a harsh critic- of Microsoft in general, but I think it's great that people who might have skipped these games before can pick them up for so cheap now. Let's hope they keep dropping the prices of their Platinum Hits titles.

SWEET. Never owned xbox180, got 360, and will be getting a 180 eventually too. Now I can get new copies of games I never got to play for $10, that is awesome. Going to get: Counterstrike, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, Fuzion Frenzy, MechAssault, Project Gotham Racing 2, Tom Clancy

Fuzion Frenzy was an awesome party game and wasn't nessasarily "kid-centric". Mine got stolen, so I'm happy that I can buy it again for the cheapness.

Cool, I figured it was just a matter of time before this happened, now I will just have to wait to see more games lower their prices, m y original XBOX System will be incredible once this keeps up. I don't have to go next gen, yet.

They should concentrate on getting some of those titles backwards compatible, rather than just lowering the price!

A lot of those games are crap, but then again I guess that's what "Platinum Hits" means. It's just branding to sell less popular games ;-)

Ain't that the truth, balindos. Some people just love to hear themselves complain. There are a lot of good games on that list, and being able to buy them, brand new, for 10 bucks is a steal. So what if they're a year old...they were good then and they're still good now.

Too bad most, if not all, these games were already $10 at most places and have been for a while, so this announcement isn't as exciting as it should be.

Not popular? I see only two games up there that aren't popular: Shrek and Fusion Frenzy. The others, whether they were good or not, sold very well. I don't know what criteria M$ uses to select Platinum Hits, but almost all of these games were very popular. Enter the Matrix and True Crime sucked, but they sold very well.

"Unpopular"? Please...by my count, only about 4 titles on that list were really unpopular - Shrek 2, Enter the Matrix, Fuzion Frenzy (this one is debatable), and True Crime. Granted they are older games, but did you really expect to see 2005 titles at $9.99 a pop?

Well at least its nice to offer to the less advantage people of the world the chance to even play games, this definatlly cuts down on piracy, even if piracy levels of these games where lower then that of lets say..black and white 2.

Believe it or not, Shrek 2 sold like crazy to parents around the time it came out. I worked for EB Games at the time and it was scooped up. Does it mean it was any good....no, not a chance. And these are based off of sales over a certain amount of time.

Some people might care, but most, unfortunately, do not. Regardless, Microsoft needs to make up losses by outdoing Sony's collection prices, which, so far, they are. Too bad all these games are old and, for the most part, unpopular. What they need to do is continue the support with 3rd party titles to XBox and slowly leak in XBox 360. There are no 1st part titles coming and that fine, but if Sony will continue to support the PS2, Microsoft should do the same. At least for a little while longer...
