Microsoft has announced it will natively support cross-platform play between Xbox One, Windows 10, and other "online multiplayer networks." The move effectively opens the Xbox Live platform so that it can accommodate players on Sony's PlayStation Network, among others.

No Caption Provided

The announcement was made on Xbox.com by Chris Charla, director of ID@Xbox, who said "it's up to game developers to support this feature" and noted that players will "always have the option of choosing to play only with other Xbox Live players."

"In addition to natively supporting cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 games that use Xbox Live, we're enabling developers to support cross-network play as well," Charla explained.

"This means players on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with players on different online multiplayer networks--including other consoles and PC networks."

The first game to support the functionality is Psyonix's Rocket League, which will allow Xbox One and PC players to matchmake against each other. Microsoft also extended "an open invitation for other networks to participate as well."

GameSpot has contacted Sony for a comment.

Rocket League supports cross-platform play between the PlayStation 4 and PC versions of the game. When the game launched on Xbox One, it did not contain any cross-platform functionality.

"The Xbox platform doesn't allow for cross-play matchmaking between other systems as a general practice across all titles," developer Psyonix said at the time.

@gralvader: You mean like they have always been. Sony has always been the one to do cross play. Actions are more important like the fact Rocket League, Final Fantasy, DCUO are actually cross play with pc on ps4.

"The Xbox platform doesn't allow for cross-play matchmaking between other systems as a general practice across all titles," developer Psyonix said at the time.

@soarlozer: But yet MS has made an attempt at it 9-10 years ago, albeit short lived.

"Cross-platform play isn't unheard of Xbox Live, though it is rare. Shadowrun supported it between Xbox 360 and PC players back in 2007, while IDARB did the same with Xbox One and PC earlier this year and Fable Legends will when it's released."

Most games aren't cross platforms, only select few are.

@calamityo: come back to me when nintendo can play current or even last gen games.....

Cross play is a dev option, and if that platform can't even play the game in the first place, why would it be cross play on that system?

@Mirimon78: A) Quote directly what I wrote B) Don't try to twist my words

Aren't you the one peddling that Sony is open to 'all' networks or at least implying that. Yes Nintendo can play the same game, however. I repeat however this boils down to Nintendo' policy. That policy being "family-friendly" and they've had that policy for decades. Not some useless argument of 'it can't play the game'. To answer my own statement - Nintendo is a closed eco-system. Will that change, maybe.

@Mirimon78: So you can't proof your statements... Lies. That's what toxic fanboys do. For a 37 years old man that waste time discussing with teenagers about a plastic box, you need help. Pathetic. Get a life loser. No more lies.

@Zicoroen: first of all, that's my first born who is 37, good job jumping to that conclusion.

Secondly, just because you want to ignore reality doesn't make it a lie. Go ahead and search for your own self or stfu about it. I could send you all the evidence in the world about it and it wouldn't matter because you would ignore it, because that is what fanatics do, they ignore facts.

So far all you have done is ignore the truth and call people names because you have no argument, not a single leg to stand on.

Come back when you've grown up a bit and done enough research to at least try supporting your stance.

@Zicoroen: Sony has 0 interest in PC market. MS has had games for live, which had your gamertag for a PC game. Not a single game has been cross play.

Rocket league will be the FIRST time MS has opened their live server for cross play since FF11 on 360.

So why would someone who has stakes in the PC crowd not allow crossplay (At least PC-360/X1 only) for all these years? I have never seen sony issue a formal invitation to MS for crossplay, but nice words and good intentions (This news from MS) is nothing compared to actions (The fact PS4 has had crossplay already).

The current games that are cross play is the proof that Sony is open to it.

@soarlozer: The X360 had the option to be cross-play, way back in 2007. However MS dropped the ball with it, the mere fact that that option was available is enough, the fact they did at one time implement it is proof that they were open about it. Basically you're being disingenuous. Not a single game?. IDRAB is cross play between XB1-PC. And this coming from this site;

"Cross-platform play isn't unheard of Xbox Live, though it is rare. Shadowrun supported it between Xbox 360 and PC players back in 2007, while IDARB did the same with Xbox One and PC earlier this year and Fable Legends will when it's released."

@calamityo: It doesn't mean anything when the post I replied to was a implication that sony wasn't on board.

Sony never locked out MS to begin with, MS wanted to be a exclusive network and it backfired. Most of the posts in here imply that Sony is locking them out when MS have tried to be exclusive by its own choice.

Never heard of idarb, it isn't in this article. Oh wait its no where near as popular as any of the 3 I listed but it didn't even get cross play until feburary 2016. Sorry if Sony released a PC cross play FPS I would def mark that as incompetence on their part.

The fact that there was a 8 year gap between crossplay means they literally were not open about it lol. It is nice they have changed their mind but like I said again it is on Xbox to prove they are open since Sony has never backed out of cross play.

@calamityo: its rare because msft mandates that it only be with pc, no cross play with any other brand' hardware.... so only games exclusive to msft supported it.

I carefully read the entire article three times and I came to the conclusion that Microsoft is saying "Please join our sinking ship. PLleessseee". Now before you keyboard warriors start giving me a hard time, I like to remind you that English is not my first language so my translation might be off

@Moonco: you read it right. Msft wants everybody to get onto xbl.. and that will likely cost either the users or the other companies...as well as expose their customers to a poorly performing and insecure network (and feed msft personal data).

@almondfish: Anti-trust laws might prevent them from keeping players on other platforms from playing with PS4 owners. The idea of "want to play with your friends? Buy the same system as them or get lost" mentality could be used against Sony if push came to shove.

It's also worth mentioning that Sony has allowed this once with Portal 2 for PS3 and PC.

@Jinzo_111887: ff11 launched in jp, on pc, and later to the rest on ps2 initially. It then went to ps3, and years later with some great effort oer the years it more or less made it to thw xbox 360. It was truly cross play in all aspects, using eithwr dial up or broadband.

This would be great if it worked. I'd also save $50 because I would only have to pay for either PS Plus or Live instead of both. And I wouldn't have to buy the same game for both consoles just because my Sony friends want to play the game I'm playing with Xbox friends. Feel like this won't happen though sadly.

@gamer112696: nope... ths is saying they want everybody else to use xbl, sony would have to either have their customers pay for xbl, or sony itself would have to pay msft to use it.

The solution has alrwady been there, sony is open, and doesn't care if it is on psn or some external 3rd party network.

@Zicoroen: The game devs control what is cross play on sony system, outside of agreeing on terms with the psn which can't be that outrageous since there is at least 3 cross play games RIGHT now.

My guess is never on COD & BF since most console players would cry unless its xbox vs ps4, and creating a feature to let console play on PC servers is probably not worth it (it would be a niche market) to Activision and EA.
