Microsoft: We don't "force" Rare to make Kinect games

"Forcing a studio to do something is never a successful equation," Head of Xbox Phil Spencer says.

Iconic UK studio Rare's most recent projects have been Kinect games like the recently released Kinect Sports Rivals for Xbox One, but Microsoft has never "forced" the company to make games for the camera technology, Head of Xbox Phil Spencer says.

"I've also laughed when people have tried to use the word, what I 'force' them to do. If you're around any independent studio, or like Rare a studio that's independent-minded, you'll know that forcing a studio to do something is never a successful equation," Spencer told OXM.

Spencer went on to say that Rare is, and always has been, free to look at "all kinds of different opportunities" when setting out to make a new game.

Founded in 1985, Rare is a veteran studio responsible for a host of recognizable games, including GoldenEye 007, Perfect Dark, and Banjo-Kazooie. Their most recent game, Kinect Sports Rivals, launched last month. So what is the company up to next?

"[Rare has] just come off the successful launch of Kinect Sports Rivals," Spencer said. "I think I've heard a few times from people asking about Rare--they're in the process of evaluating what they want to do next, and we're working closely with them to see what their new project will be."

Microsoft announced this week that Kinect, though it remains a core component of Microsoft's vision for the Xbox One, will no longer be included with every Xbox One starting next month. Spencer argues that dropping Kinect from the Xbox One package will actually lead to greater Kinect sales in the long-run. The new $399 Xbox One launches June 9.

It's difficult to trust anything MS says anymore. MS decides what games are made and not made. Period. You're also not technically forced to get a job, buy a car, or eat, but guess what?

You want me to buy Xbox One Microsoft, it's very, very simple.

1) Make Banjo Kazzoie and Banjo Tooie work on Xbox One as well. Don't give me the crap that it can't be done, you could easily write a N64 emulator emulating those games. I don't want to buy a 360 which is obsolete now to play them again legally.

2) Make the Conker sequel

3) Bring back Perfect Dark (and DO IT RIGHT THIS TIME), Blast Corps, new Banjo Kazzoie (again do it right this time), Jet Force Gemini.

4) A new GOOD Killer Instinct made by RARE, not crappy Double Helix. I want a GOOD KI game that plays EXACTLY LIKE THE OLD GAMES NOT LIKE STREET FIGHTER. If I want to play a game like Street Fighter I WOULD PLAY STREET FIGHTER.

Do these things and I will buy Xbox One right now.

Rare hasn't made anything worthwhile in so long that nobody is expecting anything great from them any more. We have the nostolgic games from their past and we thank them for it. The staff has had major changes and ownership by Microsoft has stifled their creativity.

No matter how Microsoft wants to word it, they have a strong influence over which of Rare's projects get worked on and which ones will make it to production. Maybe Rare isn't coming up with anything outside of Kinect worth Microsoft's investment. Maybe Rare doesn't get the opportunities to create new and exciting non-Kinect games because that isn't a priority for Microsoft at this time. It's an internal studio, so unless someone decides they want to get fired, the staff there will nod their heads and smile at whatever Microsoft says about them. "Independent-minded?" Maybe, but not independent operated.

I still have shivers when I boot up any SNES era Donkey Kong and see the iconic Rare logo and music theme. Shame what happened to this once great studio.

Biggest mistake Nintendo ever made (other than the Virtual Boy or sticking with cartridges for the N64) was selling it's shares of Rare to M$.

Not because Rare has really done anything memorable since, but more that it's IP's were more well established, recognizable and respected on Nintendo consoles. Even if there was inner-turmoil at Rare at the time, so what? It's those IP's that mattered. Nintendo SHOULD have bought them outright and acquired all of their IP's for themselves. If anyone could've carried on the standard of excellence for Rare's IP's Nintendo's own 1st party studios could have.

The M$ acquisition of Rare has been a flop for the most part IMO.

rare brought a mature audience to Nintendo which helped them lose the kiddy element associated with them, since then Nintendo have gone alittle backwards and I bet rare are kicking themselfs just abit, perfect dark 360 I was excited about but then lost interest every time I was near a level completion and got killed and had to restart from the beginning just frustrated the frick out of me

<< LINK REMOVED >> You're assuming the Rare brand is the entirety of the Rare experience. What about the Rare TALENT? Nintendo sells the company, assuming that's how it actually happened, and then hired the Rare devs back. Sounds like a good trick to me.

Would be awesome if Rare made a sequel for Perfect Dark Zero. That game was badass. It was the first Xbox 360 game I bought.

You know, it was my first launch game when I pick up my first Xbox 360 and Perfect Dark Zero was okay, just not what I expected from the previous Perfect Dark on N64.

Yeah, given Rare's track record, it would be nice to see them work on something cooler than an arguably garbage Kinect game like Sports Rivals, I wish they were still developing Nintendo exclusives like back in SNES times.

MS: "They make what they want to make. They are independent-minded. Hey Rare, here's $5 to make a Kinect game, take it or leave it."

Rare: "Do... Do I have to?"

MS: "You want that $5 don't you?"

Rare: ;_;

Two things.
1. Its not like Rare can just say, "NO." to a project given to them by Microsoft.
2. Everyone that was worth a damn at Rare up and left....

Rare is just a name. They are an echo of their former selves. An empty husk with the name Rare branded on its side.

Giving him the benefit of the doubt, if this is true, then Rare really did die when the founders and other talent jumped ship. If the management of the studio thinks Kinect games is the only way forward, then that's incredibly sad, especially as they are sitting on a load of beloved franchises that fans would love to see rebooted.

For god's sake, get your heads out of your arses. My son is still waiting for a sequel to Kameo, and he loved Banjo Nuts & Bolts. :P

@Gallowhand

Rare died when Nintendo sold them to "that company" they are a shadow of their former glory, I remember going for a Job interview with them back when they working from a converted farmhouse, and being hyper excited seeing a KI arcade cabinet in the reception area. Everything they made back then was pure gold, happy days. Why Nintendo sold them I will never know :(

I wonder what employees do all day when they are "evaluating what they want to do next"?

And does anyone really believe Microsoft when they say anything? They are as bad as the US government. Why wouldn't they work on and release popular franchise games if they weren't forced to release garbage?

I'm sorry but I find this statement BS. 2 years ago, I was reading an article about Rare that they say it was MS fault for making Kinect games and they blame MS for making any good games because MS wants them to make nothing but Kinect games. I gave up on Rare years ago when they sign the contract with MS and the old Rare team as we know just want there separate ways.
