Modern day Assassin's Creed possible

Lead writer Darby McDevitt says "there's always a chance," but major draw for the series is element of "historical tourism."

A modern day Assassin's Creed game is possible, according to comments from lead writer on the series Darby McDevitt today during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con.

No Caption Provided

As relayed from the company's Twitter feed, McDevitt said, "there's always a chance, but one of the biggest draws of the series is the historical 'tourism.'"

Past entries in the Assassin's Creed series have been set during various periods in history, including Colonial America, the Third Crusade, and the Renaissance.

Also during the panel, McDevitt offered a more concrete tease about the future of the Assassin's Creed series, saying a feudal Japan setting excites him.

"I think the Shogunate is in a cool era, but it's not up to one person, and whatever we do, we'll make it cool," he said.

Ubisoft also used its Comic-Con showing to reveal an all-new Assassin's Creed comic book called Assassin's Creed: Brahman. It takes place in 19th century India under British rule and stars new hero Arbaaz Mir. The comic will release later this fall alongside Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.

I guess they could make a modern sequel, but where would they go from there? 100 years into the future?

@Auction_Sniper As far as I know, they don't have to make it chronological. I mean, technically they're going back in time from Connor to Edward (not a huge leap, but still).

@Vastano The only reason they're doing that is because they can recycle a lot of expensive resources from previous games and sell another game with the least possible efforts. Just like what they did with AC: Brotherhood and AC: Revelations.

@k0k066 Both AC:Brotherhood and AC:revelations were direct sequels to their previous games. As much as it hurts to say it because I was a big AC fan (before they start the milking) I should admit that AC has become Ubisoft's COD.

Moreover, a sequel must be more than just a different protagonist or story related elements. The only true sequel made in this series is ACII.

@max-hit @Vastano Brotherhood and revelations where spin offs this one is not it has a much different more exotic feeling than AC III even though it is close to the years that the first took place. Also Edward is nothing like we've seen in previous ac's since he is selfish and him joining the assassins demands that he changes in order to become one.

my thoughts...no one cares about desmond and his stupid family storyline. We care about the cool world to explore. And the modern world isn't as cool to explore sorry. There are so many neat societies and civilizations they can still visit. I think AC should basically become like final fantasy was back in the day. the franchise name, but a completely new story and setting ever time, but with similar mechanics that evolve with each game. I think playing as a ninja during the shogunite or the Edo period in japan would be pretty amazing, SO long as they didn't tie in the Templars into it. Exploring a historical Kyoto would be awesome

I really enjoyed the modern day parts in Assassin's Creed 3 so perhaps a present day game could take from that. Although it wasn't without its flaws though. Like when Desmond was in Brazil. I was standing right next to the wanted poster of him and you could tell it was Desmond and yet no one said anything so that would need to be fixed. As for guns I say give the character one as modern day assassins do use them. Remember that part in Assassin's Creed 1 when the Assassin's came to Abstergo to rescue Desmond? I would still give the Assassin the hidden blade though and only enough ammo for if they really need to use the gun.

How about this, Ubisoft? Give a sort of Chrono Trigger-like experience, where you get to travel between the past, present, and future throughout different sections of the world's continents (of course, being relegated to a few cities in each of them)? Now that would be a massive open world experience. But, I guess the fact that Ubisoft wants to keep the franchise going for as long as possible, this kind of idea is pretty much out of the question.

Wasn't the whole idea you work through the ages and finally finish off the story with Desmond? So far AC seems like a mess of poor story planning and milking. Even with the eventual modern day setting its going to be kinda had to do all that fancy stabbing when pretty much everyone has a gun with them. Or is everyone going to be using a baton for no apparent reason like in AC2 besides the obvious "We didn't think this far head"

and the realisation slowly hits that Ubisoft repeats a lot of the same mechanics throughout it's games.

I thought the whole point was to work up to modern times where you actually do a AC with Desmond as the main protagonist.

I personally prefer the historical settings. Comparing to a lot of historical locations the modern world it pretty ugly.

To get to a point of thinking of ditching that aspect of the game I think it pretty much means ditch the franchise and work on a new IP and make it based in modern times, maybe.

End at AC4, use that big team that makes AC games to make something new, milking AC is now just preventing something new for people to experience and making yourselves just look money hungry in the process.

I am normally the first person to say end a series on a highnote.

but if the game is past exploration, theres still allot of eras not really explored yet that could be fun to play around in.

like, just as a example, ww1? I don't remember the last time I have seen a game in the great war setting.

Soviet Union might be one too.

that said, i do agree the gameplay is getting a wee bit tired at this point.

@Commissariot

Think they can get away with WW1. I believe getting to a point of an open world game made up of cars, etc there just is no point. Watch Dogs comes to mind. But there is still LOTS of historical moment which would be great brought back to life through a game. If they are talking modern times as in our time I believe they have strayed off of their own path and will drag the franchise kicking and screaming until it is well and truly dead.

Main thing is I believe. Create historical, interested moments of history and bring them to life, Especially with next gen. Off the top of my head Genghis Khan era maybe, next gen style... why not!

Japan was what I thought AC2 was gonna be. Personally I don't like that they milked out Italy as a setting, every game should have had a new location. Imagine if Brotherhood and Revelations were just expansion packs for the second game.

possible maybe but how would it work. Free running in a city with traffic?? Or would it give you the ability to drive then it would be a modern open-world action game. I don't know maybe Rio-Favela??? I really can't see how this would work? and what about historic facts maye modern things like NSA?? I really can't see how it would work we they can manage a good AC game that is true to the things AC series are known for yes it would be awesome but I don't think they can manage such a thnig as a good modern day AC sounds pretty hard to me

Like, why would you even make this statement? All you're really saying is, "Assassin's Creed really isn't that great or different from other games, the only thing that makes it stand out is that it's set in past historical eras."

@foxrock66 yeah sorry I didn't see debacle but I don't get why there no point in that a new protagonist would be just fine. It would be interesting to see a new character progressing through the assassins now with that we've already seen and known and to be honest that is the only place where I think black flag is going to dissapoint me I thought that there would be a new future protagonist bit apparently there protagonist is the player which means voicless firstperson movies which I think will be lame :\
