Molyneux says next Xbox 'not nearly as exciting' as 360

"I just want the next Xbox to be a great gaming machine," says former Microsoft Game Studios creative director.

Games industry legend Peter Molyneux has said that Microsoft's imminent debut of its next Xbox won't be "nearly as exciting" as when the publisher unveiled the Xbox 360 back in May 2005.

No Caption Provided

Speaking to the BBC, the former creative director of Microsoft Game Studios started by dubbing 2013 the year of the "console hardware refresh" and said that "although [the next Xbox is] exciting, it's not nearly as exciting as when the Xbox 360 exploded onto the gaming scene just over seven years ago."

"Back then, the 360 represented a huge leap forward in gaming, with a tangible increase in performance and fantastic multiplayer support. Gamers and game-makers were justifiably super-excited," added Molyneux. "Now it is that time again, but the world has changed."

Molyneux--who now heads up indie studio 22 Cans--points to the growing tablet and mobile markets and their frequent hardware updates as one of Microsoft's challenges with its next console, adding that "on the horizon looms Valve with its PC-based Steam Box."

"Thereby hangs the problem for Microsoft: how to justify its new console, how to get us all excited."

Its competition is no longer Sony and Nintendo, but rather Apple, Google, and Samsung.

While Molyneux says Microsoft "won the last console generation," he adds that the publisher has always seen the living room as "the big prize" for the Xbox. "When I used to work at Microsoft the key phrase that I used to hear bandied around was the next Xbox should be 'input one' on people's living room screen."

"Nowadays I'm an independent designer and I just want the next Xbox to be a great gaming machine."

Molyneux says Microsoft's next Xbox "should have great connectivity, so I can play spectacular games with my friends and be sold at a reasonable price, perhaps around $300 (£200)."

"That should be Microsoft's goal rather than persisting in trying to make it a box for everyone," he concluded.

Microsoft will unveil its new hardware today at 18:00 BST/10:00 PDT. GameSpot will be covering the next-gen Xbox unveiling live from the company's Redmond campus.

Interesting enough, he also stated on an IGN podcast that he thought the PS4 seems to be more so the console for gamers after the XBone reveal. At least based on what we know so far. He was still positive on Microsoft though, thinking they will likely succeed in becoming known for their media box, while PS4 will be the games box.

He speaks words of truth, but to be fair, nothing about this upcoming generation has been nearly as exciting as the last. Wii U, PS4, Xbox One... *snore*

The tablet issue is always an interesting one, the hardware does move fairly quickly. Maybe we will have tablets on the market before the end of the cycle that will actually be more powerful than the Xbox ONE and PS4, for the same or lower prices.

Yup. Kinect is really the only competitive advantage. Live! could be running on any platform that plugs into a tv. It was cool 8 years ago ... it's pretty mediocre now.

MS and Sony both need to get focused on the games. I don't really need their boxes for cable or entertainment that I can use on other devices. It's a nice addition, but if that's the selling point, the next generation is off to a very poor start.

I think they are going to make the next X-box more 'limited' because losers developers like Molyneux can stop over promising and actually tell gamers and the media the truth in what they actually going to put in their video games and not what to think what they should put in their console. Molyneux thinks he can do better with a statement like that considering that he's got this rep of over promising that annoys most (if not all) gamers.

Uh Google, Apple, and Samsung are absolutely not Microsoft competitors in this market. Tablet/mobile gaming will literally never be a thing outside of Nintendo and Sony handhelds, that anyone actually cares about. They are MS competition in mobile markets, yea, and not a concern.

Ah, Molyneux, maybe one day a game you make will have even half the features you claim it will have. Ever since Black & White he has consistently made claims about his games that just turned out to be untrue, I know things get dropped in development but he never mentions what ideas have been dropped. I genuinely loved the first Fable but even that did not reflect the game described by Molyneux in nearly any of the announcements.

So the new Kinect-Box gets revealed tonight. How wonderful for the media industry, and Molyneux is about as excited as a new case of users with the RROD .

Molyneux should put his money/talent where his mouth is and dedicate the next few years to developing games for the Wii-U if he is not every excited for the next Xbox. I'm not very excited either, but, it's here (and we will get to see one shortly), and, like it or not, excited or not, it will be a major player in the console universe.

the industry moves itself forward by talking trash, this side talks trash, that side talks trash, whatever. it's interesting how user comments defend or condemn peter's epiphany dividing themselves between haters and fanbois.

The Xbox brand is supreme in the U.S.A but not anywhere else. In a way Peter Molyneux is right the Xbox 720/Xbox Infinity/Xbox Durango/ or Whatever the third installment of Xbox is called. This time it is not as exciting a Xbox 360. For the simple reason manatory Kinect V2. I not feeling the magic anymore. This is not a launch day purchase for me. But today is MS's big reveal so maybe there is still hope for Xbox 720?

I'm tired of people saying the tablet and smartphone market is the future. In my opinion it's just trimming the fat of the actual console/pc gaming market, any real gamer is never going to move to those until the games are actually BETTER than on consoles

@wrestlemaniaw All three companies had their own little niche in my opinion, obviously the Wii was the most separate in this. The PS3 was focused on adventure style games while the 360 was focused on action shooters.

Microsoft won the last generation? Is he on crack? Since January 2013 the PS3 surpassed the xbox on worldwide sales. Unless he believes somehow that the USA is the only place in the world because really, the states is the only place where the xbox have good momentum.

@TristanPR77 360 sells more software, has a big paid subscription based community that rivals free community of PS, built a better system for entertainment( Kinect, online features, all successful), made super hit games that sell more hardware than competition etc...

@TristanPR77 The 360 is in more homes. Only a few places world wide has Sony taken the #1 spot. Japan for Sony has more games just for them. RPG's and a few other types of games are big and Sony has them and 360 don't. Over all, 360 has is in more homes and still out selling the PS3 and wii-u. That's a fact, look it up. You can even find on gamespot if you like. With PS4 really hitting hard Sony very well could take the #1 spot. If they can fix online gaming and PSN, they eat up xbox. I'm not saying xbox is better than PS3 or anything like that. Fact is, 360 is in more homes than PS3.
