Molyneux says next Xbox 'not nearly as exciting' as 360

"I just want the next Xbox to be a great gaming machine," says former Microsoft Game Studios creative director.

Games industry legend Peter Molyneux has said that Microsoft's imminent debut of its next Xbox won't be "nearly as exciting" as when the publisher unveiled the Xbox 360 back in May 2005.

Speaking to the BBC, the former creative director of Microsoft Game Studios started by dubbing 2013 the year of the "console hardware refresh" and said that "although [the next Xbox is] exciting, it's not nearly as exciting as when the Xbox 360 exploded onto the gaming scene just over seven years ago."

"Back then, the 360 represented a huge leap forward in gaming, with a tangible increase in performance and fantastic multiplayer support. Gamers and game-makers were justifiably super-excited," added Molyneux. "Now it is that time again, but the world has changed."

Molyneux--who now heads up indie studio 22 Cans--points to the growing tablet and mobile markets and their frequent hardware updates as one of Microsoft's challenges with its next console, adding that "on the horizon looms Valve with its PC-based Steam Box."

"Thereby hangs the problem for Microsoft: how to justify its new console, how to get us all excited."

Its competition is no longer Sony and Nintendo, but rather Apple, Google, and Samsung.

While Molyneux says Microsoft "won the last console generation," he adds that the publisher has always seen the living room as "the big prize" for the Xbox. "When I used to work at Microsoft the key phrase that I used to hear bandied around was the next Xbox should be 'input one' on people's living room screen."

"Nowadays I'm an independent designer and I just want the next Xbox to be a great gaming machine."

Molyneux says Microsoft's next Xbox "should have great connectivity, so I can play spectacular games with my friends and be sold at a reasonable price, perhaps around $300 (£200)."

"That should be Microsoft's goal rather than persisting in trying to make it a box for everyone," he concluded.

Microsoft will unveil its new hardware today at 18:00 BST/10:00 PDT. GameSpot will be covering the next-gen Xbox unveiling live from the company's Redmond campus.

@Triton @Celsius765 that might be why I still like nintendo the only thing extra nintendo is doing is video streaming and a browser and their main focus is games. But microsft no they're main focus is how to get more coin.

@Celsius765 @Triton A lot of people complain about Nintendo because they don't like the hardware or the specs, feeling it is too old for this gen. They might be right, I really don't know or understand much about specs and stuff like that.

But like you, I feel like Nintendo is the company that focuses more on gaming rather than complementary features. I'll get a WiiU eventually and maybe a PS4 later, once the price drops.

@Celsius765 @obsequies when every things said and done the 360 will be the easiest for pirating old games. The ps3 is a bit tricky when they are upgraded

For me, the only justification I need is that I have to pay a relatively small amount (for either console) and being able to play games for many years to come.

While Molyneux says Microsoft "won the last console generation."

How could he possibly think the Xbox 360 won the last generation?

In terms of sales the Wii won last generation.

In terms of games the PlayStation 3 won last generation.

@xenogenocidex

And in terms of overall game sales and attach rates, Microsoft won.

@dlCHIEF58 @xenogenocidex I don't think that's the gaming metric gamers want to use to pick a winner...

@PAL360 Molyneaux is kind of like those annoying internet people, the kind who see their opinion as a representation of absolutely everything.

That is just it isn't it? He said it himself. "a box for everyone." That is what smartphones are. Consoles are not in competition with phones and tablets. That is like saying racecars are up against hybrids. There is no comparison, and each attracts a different crowd. Sure, some people that drive racecars might own a hybrid, but they would never enter their hybrid in a race. I am getting a bit off track, but you get the idea.

@jinzo9988 I thought I read an article that said that the Curiosity social experiment thingy would come to a close on the same day as Microsoft's Xbox reveal. I wonder if we'll get any news about the "extraordinary" prize that the winner of Curiosity will be rewarded with.
