Molyneux unveils Curiosity - Report

E3 2012: Social-media-focused experimental game from Molyneux studio 22 Cans to launch in a few weeks; players will have the option to purchase in-game items, the most expensive of which will be priced at roughly $77,000.

LOS ANGELES--Former Lionhead studio head Peter Molyneux has unveiled the first project under his new label, 22 Cans.

Molyneux is experimenting with social media…and really rich people.
Molyneux is experimenting with social media…and really rich people.

Speaking with New Scientist magazine, Molyneux revealed he is working on a series of social gaming experiments in an attempt to explore the "psychology of social-media users." According to the report, Molyneux will use the results of these experiments to help him craft a game that he plans to release in two years' time.

The first of these experimental games--which is set to be released in a few weeks--is called Curiosity. The game sees players enter a virtual room containing a single black cube; players must tap at the cube to try to fracture it layer by layer. However, fractures will appear simultaneously as other players join the game online and begin tapping at the same cube.

According to Molyneux, the cube will eventually fall open after an undisclosed number of taps. What lies inside Molyneux described as "truly amazing" and "absolutely unique." The catch is that only the player who executes the final tap will get to see what's inside. 22 Cans will rely on social media for the word to spread.

During the game's duration, players will be able to purchase in-game items to help them in their quest to be the one who breaks the cube; these items will take the shape of a limited number of chisels that will amplify the strength of each tap. They will range from an iron chisel costing around 0.91 cents (with a tapping strength 10 times as powerful), all the way up to a diamond chisel costing roughly $77,000 (with a tapping strength 100,000 times as powerful).

"It's an insane amount of money," Molyneux told the magazine. "[But] this is not a money-making exercise; it is a test about the psychology of monetisation."

In March this year, Molyneux left the Microsoft-owned Lionhead Studios to open up 22 Cans.

"[But] this is not a money-making exercise; it is a test about the psychology of monetisation." No Peter. It's a money-making exercise... Peter Molyneux is literally THE WORST game developer ever to live. He won a Lifetime Achievement Award which, many would agree with me, is disgusting. Every single game he has ever made was sold on his sales pitches alone. Then when the games come out, they are all up to their eyeballs in bugs, missing features completely that were listed on the damn box the game came in, and so forth and so on. I called out Black and White 2 for its false advertising on their forums way back when I was apart of the community. Two days later after a TON of members bumped my thread and agreed with me wholeheartedly, the thread was DELETED. Not locked, and not that I got banned, but the forum thread was totally and completely deleted with no trace of its existence. Someone, probably Peter Molyneux himself, saw the thread and removed it completely with no notice given to me probably because what I posted was 100% true and grounds for a lawsuit based on what they promised their gaming community - whom they've let down every single time they release a new title. The fact that to crack open a friggen cube in a game - which is itself the game - that I can buy a $77,000 diamond chisel to get a leg up on others to "OUGHH SEE WHATS INSIDE OMGOMG" should be illegal and punishable with prison time. This guy is a complete and total charlatan who isn't doing this for some B.S. test about psychology... he's doing it to make money off of gamers -- AGAIN. Don't play this garbage game developed by a garbage bag human being. He is scum of the earth.

Considering that he always talks about how great the Fable games are and how each new one will be better than the last which never ends up to be true I worry about his definition of "unique and truly amazing"

So is the prize to find out what's in each of the 22 cans? Or maybe Molyneux has been drinking or smoking the contents already and the big "amazing" surprise will be to find out the cans are empty...

Given the name of the game is "Curiosity", I'm guessing the "amazing" prize is a dead cat. It may or may not be Schroedinger's.

Hmmm. The plot sounds better than the last Fable game. It's probably more challenging too.

Watch... after all that time whacking at the cube, the one who breaks it gets a nice flowery message saying: "Congratulations On Being The Cube Breaker. Good Night."

So this is more of a gambling type of game. Hope to be the one who breaks open the cube. Then hope the reward was worth it. If you spend real world money hopefully it is. So pure luck rather then skill will win you this game and the prize. like buying a lotterry ticket.

will be funny being "that guy" who has waited for the people who've tapped the hell out that cube, and spent money on doing so effectively, for your one or two simple taps at the end of that object's cycle to crack it. I'd be interested to know the fury of those who HAD gone as insanely mad as to have spent so much on a diamond chisel and had some guy come-in at the end and out tap them.

This sounds so much like an concept from the Molyneux parody account on Twitter. I'm not sure if that's more of a reflection on the quality and accuracy of the account itself, or whether this is simply a window into Molyneux's madness. Either way, I am at least curious about this project.

Umm--that 77,000 is in pounds--which is ~$119,000 US. So either you are wrong, or the reporter messed up the units and put $ instead of £.

Just one more data point to prove his genius. Fable 1, 2, and 3 were amazing (despite some people's statements to the contrary). I think some people don't understand how games work.

I think this is brilliant. It sounds like there will be one prize. Who will get it? Clearly it will take more than 100,000 hits to break the cube (if it were less, the diamond chisel wouldn't make much sense). This is a fantastic thing. Who will win? Who will be desparate enough to buy stronger chisels so they can be the ONE? And likely it will be way more than 100,000 hits--again--why would it be less? You don't want them to buy the diamond chisel and then just have to hit it once.

The first of these experiments is to see how much money someone is willing to spend on something that is pretty much worthless, and they know it from the start. The answer may surprise you when he releases some of his data.

Doesn't seem like anyone read the fact that he said he's running a psychological experiment. He's not making this cube thing for the sake of a game, he's using the data he collects to aid in the production of a bigger project. In other words, it's a means to an end, not some half witted money making scheme. I loved the fable games and I don't think I've ever played anything else that gets you emotionally invested to the degree that those games do. For that, they were brilliant IMO. I have faith in whatever he's doing.

Fable me once, shame on me. Fable me twice, shame on you. Fable me thrice, shame on Molyneux...

Stop, Molyneux. We already know that you're not in it for the art or the fans. You're in it for the hype and the money, and you'll bull**** your way to the moon if you find gamers gullible enough.

@brothersinarmsb Fable 1 was epic, but Molyneux was full of **** when he announced it and made promises that weren't in the game. It just so happened to be a great game anyway. Every Fable since then has basically been, "This next one is so much better!" with a bigger list of features that never see the light of day. I guess to specify, the three Fables that suck are 2, 3, and the upcoming "Fable: Carriage Driver Edition". Although, the offshoot party game got a 4 in GameInformer, so that sucks, too.

I remember reading an article about Fable 3 before it came out, with Molyneux's details of what's in the game. He listed the ability to rule as king in every aspect, making countless decisions that change the fate and conditions of the game world. Instead, we got three "Good or Bad" choices and two endings depending on how much money you saved up through the god-awful real estate system.

There are several flaws with this game. The first being Youtube. Why try to compete with several other people for the first spot when you could just let someone else record the "truly amazing and absolutely unique" prize. And if someone WAS to attempt to do it themselves, what would stop them from just going offline and tapping away for hours to see it? Might take longer but you would be sure to view the prize.

So, in other words, he's planning to take all of the worst elements of social gaming, push them to the extremes, AND make a tidy profit from it, all in the name of science? Interesting, but I can't help but see it more as a blatant, and desperate, cash grab, despite its intended purpose.

I remember when I once looked forward to this game called "Project Ego," then saw the vision get crushed in a completely different rpg; though very good, nothing what was promised. Then thinking the next would be something to what was first said, again wrong, and so on.

I've lost all respect for Molyneaux, I can't believe he's still in the industry after so many train-wrecks he's caused.

@Yulaw2000

For one, by making it known that funds would go to charity would change the dynamics of the experiment on monetization. You would then have the possibility of people just buying things for a good cause which would skew the data and not give the results he needs to make a good decision for the game he will then make based on the results.

Initially sounded quite interesting, then realised it's tapping a black cube for hours, and one person gets to see what's inside.

So, of the millions of people using social media meaning your chances are probably millions to one of being that one person, I'd rather spend my time doing something interesting. Like watching paint dry.

I'd rather somebody unveil a way to prevent Molyneux from speaking or writing about anything he does. He's egomaniac who exaggerates things like a child. I'll never forget his rantings about the original Fable taking over 60 hours to do everything (or that it would be better than Morrowind).
