Monster Hunter: World Has Released, And It's A Fantastic Starting Place For Newcomers

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

Now is the time to finally jump in.

Monster Hunter has always been an intimidating series to jump into for a variety of reasons. It's challenging for anyone, and traditionally it hasn't done a great job of explaining its various mechanics, leaving players to seek outside help. Monster Hunter World, which is now available on PS4 and Xbox One, at least partially tries to address those problems, and in many ways, it succeeds.

In addition to providing more explanation to players in the early stages, players have what's called a Handler, who dispenses tips until you've made enough progress. There are also quality-of-life improvements like scoutflies that reduce the hassle of tracking a monster--something that's particularly helpful given World's larger environments.

Now Playing: Should This Be Your First Monster Hunter?

In the video above, we chat about what it's been like to play World from both the standpoint of a series veteran and someone with less Monster Hunter experience. It should give you a sense of what to expect from World regardless of your experience level. Whatever your personal history with the series, this is a very solid RPG to jump into.

We also have starting tips and a beginner's guide, as well as a roundup of all of our key coverage about World. Plus, you can see what the game looks like in 4K on PS4 Pro and find out all the details about its day-one update. For more on the new game, check out our Monster Hunter World review, which states, "Monster Hunter World is finally here, and it blows the previous western releases out of the water."

This will be my first game of the franchise.

I will be getting it on the X1X.

As far as I can tell there really isn't an over arching story continuing through the game. So starting with this one should be fine.

Though my schedule doesn't open up for another game for a few more months. Chances are this will be a Spring, or perhaps even Summer purchase for me. But it is something I intend to enjoy.

Got my copy of Monster Hunter World, and of course PSN is now down. They upped the price to only provide the same lame online service!

@Maxxgold: that was my main gripe with Sony last gen. PSN. But most sony drones in here will swear psn NEVER has issues. Which coming from last gen, I find that hard to believe.

@plus_1: I'm sorry but unless you live your life in online gaming consoles, you don't notice it.

@plus_1: PSN frequently has issues, whether people admit it or not. And downloads are always slow...as...****, (and don't even give me the whole "get better internets" shit, I have business class at home since I'm a mobile worker).

I love my P4 Pro, but Xbox Live just kills PSN every day of the week, no question.

@aross2004: Xbox Live is superior for sure but I’m a Console Exclusives Guy and since I switched from Xbox to PlayStation towards the end of 2013, it worked out great for me.

@stealthy1: I had such high hopes for Sea of Thieves. But after repeatedly being part of the alpha/beta testing my anticipation has completely dwindled. The world as a whole feels empty and it just doesn't seem like there's going to be much to keep people coming back. Just my opinion.

@Maxxgold: I fixed it by signing out of PSN in the settings, restarting the PS4 and then just signed back in.

Good to know. I know they are many like me (-like YOU, Ninja? Riiight.-) who always get a little apprehensive about jumping into a a new series having not played any of the previous entries. The only time it usually seems to work out is when a new installment has nothing to do with the previous entries, at least in terms of things like story/narrative/characters (Ex: Dark souls/Bloodborne, etc...).

@Rovelius: I resent that remark!

I'm not weird! If anything I'm the one who... hold on a sec...

Just... ughhh... got to readjust my ninja mask as I type this... hold on... erg, ugh...

There we go. Ah, now where were we?

@Rovelius: Better to be unique and stand out than bland and predictable. Or rude.

Also, bear in mind, that you are in the midst of a community of gaming geeks and that we all, most likely, have our idiosyncrasies.

@gotrekfabian: everyone has their own idiosyncrasies. wrong word. and also, don't lump all gamers into your weird pool. some of you have no problem spending your life savings on collectible dolls. others are more casual about it.

@bobbo888: Casual about it? Are you saying you only spend one month's salary on your collectible dolls? I'm somewhere in the middle. I'm willing to commit 18 months' salary on my collectible dolls.

@bobbo888: Yes, and to say it again in case you didn't read it properly: We all have our idiosyncrasies. How is that the incorrect word? I wasn't referring to just gamers either.
