NeoGeo games coming to US Wii

SNK Playmore confirms Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting, and World Heroes for the Virtual Console, with more to follow in coming months.

Earlier this year, Nintendo of Japan signaled its intention to host classic SNK NeoGeo games on the Wii's Virtual Console downloadable gaming service. However, there was no word on whether or not such offerings would be made available internationally until now.

Largely unsung: World Heroes.
Largely unsung: World Heroes.

SNK Playmore today announced that it would indeed be bringing NeoGeo games to the North American Virtual Console, beginning with a trio of the system's earliest fighting games. Fatal Fury is the first installment in the brawling Bogard brothers' saga, which has recently seen a rash of rereleases with Fatal Fury Battle Archives on the PlayStation 2 and Fatal Fury Special on the Xbox 360's Live Arcade.

The other two announced games--Art of Fighting and World Heroes--are a little less frequently revisited. Art of Fighting was included in the PS2 Art of Fighting Anthology earlier this year, but apart from that hasn't seen the light of day in more than a decade. World Heroes was included in a similar PS2 collection in Japan, but the franchise has been dormant in North America for about a dozen years.

Tokyo-based D4Enterprise will manage the release of the games onto the Virtual Console, but SNK Playmore said more titles will definitely follow "in the coming months." An SNK Playmore representative told GameSpot the first titles will appear by the end of the year, and they are expected to sell for 900 Wii points ($9) each.

I wonder if SNK will eventually release 2001 and 2002, since they're Eolith titles.

Oh yeah and if they don't put Samurai Shodown on Wii as one of the first releases, I'm going to be pissed because I already have the Art of Fighting Anthology and the Fatal Fury Battle Archives and I want my Samurai Shodown again, that is the all time greatest Neo Geo game.

While $9.00 (900 points) is certainly reasonable compared to their original pricing, I believe Nintendo is being bullish in their pricing of VC games in general. If we can get a souped up version of Fatal Fury Special (one of the all time great Neo Geo games) for $5.00 (400 points) from Microsoft, Nintendo must be saying screw you were loading our pockets with cash because we are number one now and we will do what the hell we want. I hope 360 rebounds and takes the number one posistion in this generation because Microsoft has shown that they care about the gamers with their retroactive warranty (granted it shouldn't have had to come to that) but they at least did what was right. If Wii's all across the world start breaking I dont see Nintendo doing something similar. And I have a couple of friends who have had to already send their Wii back so it's not unthinkable.

getoconnection: "You would be infringing on copyrights by seeking "other means...that don't cost a dime" meaning "YOU DON'T HAVE TO PAY" according to the previous post. I don't know how else to explain my posture to you. You are rationalizing, like i said. You go on the assumption that someone owns said systems when clearly that was not a variable in the original statement, otherwise "you would have to pay a dime." And you go on the assumption that someone doesnt. I myself explained that to you in a message, after which you still refused to remove my name from a post that encourages illegal use of said technology, specifically what I said in another message I do NOT condone. And once again, it proves nothing other than you expect because of the faults of one, that many be punished. I use my own emulators to play games that I own, on a system other than which it was orig. designed to run on. Does that make me a pirate? No. Does that mean I am doing anything illegal? No. But you instead still group me into the same category as "illegal emulator user" because SOME people use it for that purpose. I will not argue this further, as your side of the argument is clearly flawed. I will instead leave you with a thought to ponder. Because some kid decided to kill his classmates, after he played GTA, does that mean it shouldnt be sold anymore? No. Because some person was drinking and driving, does that mean that Alchohol should be illegal to everyone? No. Because someone was pirating music illegally, does that mean I shouldnt be allowed to rip my songs to put onto my MP3 player? No. You cant group me into the same category as a pirate, because I say emulation isnt illegal, when it simply isnt. As I said before, case in point, look at the Wii, as its "Virtual Console" is nothing more than emulation at its finest. Yes, you can use it for wrong, the same way a Police officer can use a gun to stop bad people, but those bad people can also use guns to kill police officers. GG

For £179.99 - you get the wii, wii sports (and sometimes another game included in the price depending on the store) - you get weather channel, photo channel, create your own mii, browse the net for free, play games from older consoles, play gamecube games and use the controllers and memorycards from that... and now you can play the great NeoGeo stuff. Who needs movies when you got an amazing choice of games! This is what a games machine is all about for me :D

The annoying thing about virtual console games is that they outnumber the regular Wii games. Since Gamespot has no way to filter them out, there's no easy way to look at a list of , say reviews, for normal games.

Dualmask "I'm a little confused by a lot of folks' posts... $8 is fine for a 16-bit game for the SNES or Genesis, but one dollar more is too much for a Neo Geo game?" It think it is because when people think about SNES-games, classics like Mario World, Zelda and Metroid come to their mind where as NeoGeo-games probably bring only vague memories of a game system that was published and since forgotten some time long ago. At least to me this is the case. I am still looking forward to NeoGeo-stuff being released in Euro VC. Here the price would be around $15 so I would definitely have to consider before buying anything, though.

$9 for a NeoGeo game? That beats the hell out of what they originally cost. I'll take Samurai Showdown 3 (best of the series) and Fatal Fury Special and consider it $18 well spent. I wonder if they'll release a NeoGeo controller addon for the Wii.

KoF...Fatal Fury Special...Samurai Shodown...possibly on the VC... I think I'm actually going to shed a tear. On a slightly related note, I'm not a big fan of online gaming, but i really think Nintendo needs to make VC games possible to play online, for free or for extremely low cost (no more than $5 per month). I've played emulators that have the functionality. That would make the Wii an even more enticing system than it is now.

While I'm glad to see Neo games on the Wii, as a former AES owner I must admit that $9 each for those games is asking too much, especially since you can get the Fatal Fury Battle Archives and Art of Fighting Anthology for about $20 each for the PS2. It would be nice if they had more of the recent offerings, or a larger selection of Neo titles like Gametap has, but sadly Gametap isn't selling those games.
