NeoGeo games coming to US Wii

SNK Playmore confirms Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting, and World Heroes for the Virtual Console, with more to follow in coming months.

Earlier this year, Nintendo of Japan signaled its intention to host classic SNK NeoGeo games on the Wii's Virtual Console downloadable gaming service. However, there was no word on whether or not such offerings would be made available internationally until now.

Largely unsung: World Heroes.
Largely unsung: World Heroes.

SNK Playmore today announced that it would indeed be bringing NeoGeo games to the North American Virtual Console, beginning with a trio of the system's earliest fighting games. Fatal Fury is the first installment in the brawling Bogard brothers' saga, which has recently seen a rash of rereleases with Fatal Fury Battle Archives on the PlayStation 2 and Fatal Fury Special on the Xbox 360's Live Arcade.

The other two announced games--Art of Fighting and World Heroes--are a little less frequently revisited. Art of Fighting was included in the PS2 Art of Fighting Anthology earlier this year, but apart from that hasn't seen the light of day in more than a decade. World Heroes was included in a similar PS2 collection in Japan, but the franchise has been dormant in North America for about a dozen years.

Tokyo-based D4Enterprise will manage the release of the games onto the Virtual Console, but SNK Playmore said more titles will definitely follow "in the coming months." An SNK Playmore representative told GameSpot the first titles will appear by the end of the year, and they are expected to sell for 900 Wii points ($9) each.

Wii VC.... SNK Playmore... I'm sorry, what were they talking about? All I could think of was Crystalis for the NES. I know Nintendo supposedly has rights to it, but having the original developer on-board for other titles can't hurt. :) Also, World Heroes ate many a quarter of mine as did Samurai Showdown. Good news for us Wii owners.

If you think it's too much money, then... wait for it... don't purchase them. To put things into perspective, $9 is less than the average price of a movie ticket here. As for me, I want Samurai Shodown!

supreuph its because there is a little bit of a demand for these games because they were never affordable to own, thats the reason Neo Geo games can be that high priced. But yea you make a good point and companies shouldn't take advantage of there customers like this, but they do.

$9 is way too much. By da way 2 all those people waitin 4 SMRPG, I really think SMRPG will come out around the time that SMGalaxy comes out like wat they did wit Super Metroid and Metroid Prime 3. It makes sense if you think about it.

I agree with Books83 and I can't wait to play Neo-Geo games on my Wii, and I wouldn't mind paying $9 dollars for them.

9 dollars? When will these digital distibution leaders realize that some prices are too big. This isn't even a VC matter, it's the same with other games, movies, music, etc. When things are too ineffecient or overpriced, people just float to the next, easiest, free option (Torrent, Limewire, ROMs and Emulators, etc). But this won't stop me from enjoying a couple games.

Too put this in perspective for people who think $9 is too expensive. Neo geo games usally ran for $200. This is the cheapest legal way to get Neo Geo games.

Never had a NeoGeo, so I'll be looking forward to buying some of those games. But $9 is crazy, I'll only be getting the really good ones.

$9 is way too much. You're just getting a 2D fighting game. It doesn't matter how much the cartridges cost back then. Remember when CD players first came out and they cost hundreds of dollars? It cost them alot back then to make miniature arcade systems. We're paying for software these days, not cutting edge technology. Are you telling me Fatal Fury at $9 will be worth more than Super Mario RPG at $8?

IDK, considering the price of N64 titles being 1000 points ($10), I'd say it's not too bad. I also remember the price of the system and games when it first came out. I guess back then, having a shrinked down arcade machine in your home was the reason for the price, but you also have to take in to consideration that SNK, unlike Nintendo, and more than Sega, SNK did mostly arcade machines and not mass production home consoles. And back then, remember Panasonic 3DO? That was supposed to be the future of gaming, just a few years too early because of the technology limitations for developers, and contracts with Nintendo. I remember going to the arcades and Shakey's Pizza's and playing AOF, SS, and KoF and thinking, "Wow, I wish I could have this at home." Also at the time, arcades were still popular and home consoles bearly started to get good arcade ports to their systems.

Please, please... Make King of Fighters 2003 available! It wasn't on Dreamcast unlike '98 through 2002. And the US PS2 edition is bundled with said 2002, which I have little interest in.
