NES Remix went to Wii U because it needed more power than 3DS offers

Horsepower played a role in choosing which system to bring the remixed NES game compilations to.

With NES Remix and NES Remix 2 consisting primarily of just what their titles describe--remixed versions of games for the 30-year-old Nintendo Entertainment System--system power is not what you might expect to play a role in deciding which platforms these new compilations will be made for. As it turns out, horsepower did play a role in that decision, and is part of the reason the two games are on the Wii U, and not the 3DS.

In an interview with IGN, director Koichi Hayashida explained that, after working on Super Mario 3D World for Wii U, he was already familiar with the system's architecture. That made it a natural choice for his next project. However, he also spoke about system power and how that factored into allowing Nintendo to more easily create the game it wanted.

“I think the Wii U offered that up for us pretty easily," Hayashida said, referring to the desired system power, "and it just would have been more difficult to do it for the 3DS. I think that's really the answer. It's just that the Wii U had the machine power we were looking for in order for us to build the software we envisioned from the get go."

The Wii U has long been thought of by some as lacking the necessary power to compete with the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, a perception Nintendo has been working to dispel for just as long. The 3DS is also less powerful than its primary competitor, the PlayStation Vita, but that hasn't stopped it from selling millions of units.

Featuring games like Super Mario Bros. 2 and 3, NES Remix 2 releases on Wii U this Friday, April 25.

Yes...there is virtually no way that the 3ds could possibly handle the graphical powerhouse that is Wariowa...uh...NES Remix 2.

Can't imagine anyone wanting to play classic NES/SNES games in 3d or anything. That certainly wouldn't be completely fucking amazing or anything. Idiots.

My bullshit detector got so fast it exploded. There are many reasons to only put it on WiiU (like pushing WiiU sales or a team that has no experience with the 3Ds), but power isn't one of them

C'mon people... learn to read...
The thing was it was a lot easier to develop it for the Wii U (a fraction of the time and the money to develop it). It's like doing disk operations on a slow disk or in an SSD... in a regular program you cant do intensive disk operations since it halt the CPU while it waits until the READ/WRITE operation finishes... You can avoid that halting (or schedule it better) if you use threads, mutex, semaphores and stuff like that (Lots of more developing time)... but if you have a fast SSD, maybe halting the processing during the disk operation doesn't impact the performance that much... (Yay, i dont have to code that anoying synchronizing cross-check multi-threaded code)... Koichi Hayashida only said that it was EASIER because it got more horsepower than the 3DS, that doesn't mean at all that a experienced enought programmer on 3DS couldn't do the same job in about the same time... but he was not a 3DS dev.

I think the conversation with the executives was something like this:
-Executive: We need Nes Remix ASAP.
-Dev: Sure, It look like a piece of cake.
-Executive: How long for the first alpha build?
-Dev: 3.. 4 weeks tops.
-Executive: Great... I can't wait to play it on my 3DS.
-Dev: Wait... i tought it was for the Wii U... I have zero experiencie developing for 3DS.
-Executive: Right... I forgot that you haven't been involved on 3DS proyect yet... This could be an opportunity to learn.
-Dev: Yeah, but it will take longer to develop since I'm not familiarized at all with the architecture.
-Executive: How long for the first build on 3DS?
-Dev: If i have to learn from scratch... I think... maybe 9 weeks.
-Executive: We can wait that long and we don't have any idle personal now... so don't worry... do the Wii U version only... maybe latter we can do a 3DS port.
-Dev: Thank you Mr Japannesse-name sama.

I see some 3DS owners are angry because this game is not available on Nintendo 3DS. When I first saw the trailer, I asked myself: Why is this not also available on the Nintendo 3DS? But after I've played it on my Wii U, now I understand why. First: the game is so addicting that if it was released for 3DS, it would run out of battery before you know it. Second: This game may look simple to make as some of you think, but it's not. If you played the remix section of the game, the elements and graphics of the games have changed, like zooming in while you are playing and new backgrounds of the games. Besides, I believe that NES Remix is better played on a home console like the original NES console meant to be, but that's just my opinion.

If 3DS can handle games like Metal Gear Solid 3 and Resident Evil Revelations, I don't understand why it can't handle some simple mini-games from 8-bit games in the 1980s.

The NES has more power under the hood than any of us could imagine. Can it run Crysis?

Yeah, sure it did. Like 8bit-based games really need an overwhelming amount of hardware power to run.

I think you guys just have shitty software developers. There shouldnt be any reason why NES and SNES games cant run on a 3DS. In fact, i think R4 cards have already done it on the original DS and there should be no reason why it wouldnt work on the 3DS.

Judging by the comments, I don't think a lot of you have actually played NES Remix.

Sample irrelevant comment: "The 3DS needed more horsepower to play 20 year old games? I don't think so."

No, that's not what the article said. It said the 3DS needed more horsepower to play NES Remix. It's a brand new game that Nintendo just developed. It features bits and pieces of 20-year-old games (with the original graphics, by the way), but that is not the whole game. I can't comment on whether NES Remix could or could not have been developed to work on the 3DS, but I can tell you, having played it, that it is a new, modern game with, I'm sure, complex graphics and code logic behind it. So I wouldn't dismiss this statement without playing the game first.

<< LINK REMOVED >> It doesnt says that the 3DS need more horsepower... it said that since the Wii U is more powerfull... the develoment process is a lot easier. The 3DS has lots more than enough horsepower to run that game.

lolwut? I can emulate SNES games (100% playable) on my low end phone. How crappy is the 3DS? I knew it doesn't pack much of a punch compared to the powerhouse that is the Vita, but still lol.

<< LINK REMOVED >> the 3ds can play these games just fine as is they are nes games unless they redo the visuals to next gen level this is just a ploy to get people into the wii u. nes games were less the a meg i dont see how updating the graphics would make it impossible to play on the 3ds. nintedo is full of it.

I think the biggest crime is that some very neat Wii U downloadable games go unnoticed and unadvertised on the system.

The virtual console on the Wii U (and 3DS for that matter) are an embarrassment.

This game would probably get more attention on the 3DS.

Come on Nintendo don't flat out lie to me like I am a complete moron because that's all that is, a complete and utter lie. Its shit like that that makes me not want to support you at all. If you wanted to do this to tug on nostalgic heartstrings of people and try to swing them to buy a wii u because its selling poorly then either just say that, or don't say anything, but certainly don't make up a lie that insults my intelligence.

No wonder youre in last place Nintendo, you deserve to be there.

If you can't get NES style graphics on the 3DS, then you're not very good at optimization.

Wow, these graphics are amazing. Sony ponies are just mad because the PS4 wasn't powerful enough to handle it.

All right first post in forever, haven't logged into this account in nearly 8 years :O

back to the point

as a 3DS owner this is pretty disappointing to hear, especially since my first gen PSP can play N64 games on an emulator I have on it, (own the actual cartridges so not advocating piracy)

as well as GBA, SNES, etc

and took advantage of the Sony flash sale, and :O it can also play PS1 games, shocking I know

all that aside I love my 3DS but cmon Nintendo

and my 500$ Xbox One cant play video off a USB stick

Cant win with anyone anymore

@sakaixx @darkmafia99 lol says I signed up in 2006 have legacy points and all that, maybe not 8 years but a substantial time, to a point I don't remember had to do a password recovery and all, when was your account created? Could have been new TOS or something

wish it had all the old info, would have been a time warp and a half seeing old wish lists or game collections from that time though but google wayback machine and can see gamespot back when it first launched in the mid to late 90's or any site for that matter as they have archived millions of sites at different years since the internet pretty much launched.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Yea all 3 next gen consoles are so disapointing. I bought a ps4 because there happened to be one at my local shoppers on seniors discount day (I went with my dad) so at 20% it was a no brainer, but I'm still dissapointed with it overall. It's crazy that the next gen consoles can have less features than the predecessors (like not being able to even play a fn movie of a usb stick!)

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> cant go wrong with that what so ever, but simple features, just got notifications when friends log in that came in the last update.

Titanfall is fun but needs more gametypes and everything else is multiplatform, and my PC is 150$ video card away from matching either console.

If anyone has a regular PC and wants to upgrade it, the Nvidia GTX 750 Ti can handle a 300 Watt PSU and bring similar results, use it for business as I work from home, dual monitor setup so games on one screen and work on the other lol

At this point all it matters is personal preference, have to pay for online services for both now 50$ difference, guess we shall see how each does, but next Naughty Dog game is a system seller for me.
