NES Remix went to Wii U because it needed more power than 3DS offers

Horsepower played a role in choosing which system to bring the remixed NES game compilations to.

With NES Remix and NES Remix 2 consisting primarily of just what their titles describe--remixed versions of games for the 30-year-old Nintendo Entertainment System--system power is not what you might expect to play a role in deciding which platforms these new compilations will be made for. As it turns out, horsepower did play a role in that decision, and is part of the reason the two games are on the Wii U, and not the 3DS.

In an interview with IGN, director Koichi Hayashida explained that, after working on Super Mario 3D World for Wii U, he was already familiar with the system's architecture. That made it a natural choice for his next project. However, he also spoke about system power and how that factored into allowing Nintendo to more easily create the game it wanted.

“I think the Wii U offered that up for us pretty easily," Hayashida said, referring to the desired system power, "and it just would have been more difficult to do it for the 3DS. I think that's really the answer. It's just that the Wii U had the machine power we were looking for in order for us to build the software we envisioned from the get go."

The Wii U has long been thought of by some as lacking the necessary power to compete with the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, a perception Nintendo has been working to dispel for just as long. The 3DS is also less powerful than its primary competitor, the PlayStation Vita, but that hasn't stopped it from selling millions of units.

Featuring games like Super Mario Bros. 2 and 3, NES Remix 2 releases on Wii U this Friday, April 25.

When trying to showcase the powers of the WiiU compared to the Xbox One & PS4, maybe borrowing games from 30 years ago isn't the best way to convey the message.

Yes, Nintendo is terrible company for making games. Now, if they were like Sony - once charging for online passes, making people re-buying year old games and cutting lose of all their developers - Nintendo would be a "great" company. According to Sony fanboys.

@chev9378 "once charging for online passes" If only Nintendo had online worth charging for.

"making people re-buying year old games" The very thing this article is about.

"and cutting lose of all their developers" No argument there. All of the developers cut Nintendo first.

If they did a SNES Remix, would the Wii U not be up to the task? I kid. In all seriousness, start releasing SNES games on the 3DS already. It took you THREE YEARS to put Super Mario Bros 3 on the eShop... I don't get why that's necessary if you have the tech to run a single NES game. Surely you're not programming each one separately to run on the device rather than doing what an emulator essentially does. Get to work on SNES games already... I'm beginning to regret going legit with my 3DS as far as retro gaming goes.

To me, it just looks like Nintendo wanted a quick cask game, and the 3DS would have taken too long. Notice how the "sequel" is already coming out?

The only way this could make sense is if they wanted breathing room to write ridiculously inefficient code. And that's not something you should be admitting to the public.

I don't think people understand that how much power a game needs from a console isn't just measured by how it looks, like 2d games for example, many just assume that basically everything can run it because it's just 2d, but it's just not that simple. There's a lot of things going around in a game and 3DS might not just be able to handle it even if the game looks just 8-bit.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I get what you're saying, but it's still odd given that even the old DSi with one of those special hack carts can run emulated NES and SNES games, not even native code and not even written by Nintendo themselves.

Like many others are saying, it sounds like it's not really an issue of direct raw power but rather them not being willing to make the additional effort, for whatever reasons.

lol it's not a perception. The WiiU is underpowered relative to the XboxOne and PS4.

And as for 3DS not having enough power for NES Remix, I call BS.

It's annoying that Nintendo make VC titles and titles like this only available for the WiiU. Does the WiiU have so little going for it?

To third-part developers from Nintendo: "The Wii U is powerful enough to run remixes of games that are 30 years old. Develop for this powerful piece of hardware... please."

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>It's biting sarcasm because Nintendo is saying they needed a more powerful console to run 8-bit remixed games. This game could be fun. I'll give you that. Graphics don't mean anything True. But you missed the point. My point is that any five year old could recognize this ploy as an excuse to make people buy the Wii U because they ported the game from the 3DS to the Wii U and used the terrible excuse that "power" was the reason. I don't own a PS4 btw and haven't played one. Also, the reason I don't a Wii U because it =/= fun.

I doubt your naive enough to not realize that what video games are about to you is not really what they are about to Nintendo or any other video game company. You're just getting a little caught up in the emotions, it's OK :).

Not sure I really believe this considering how good emulators run on old systems and emulators are complete hacks. Nintendo has the actual code needed...

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I agree that Capcom and Square are just as much of a mess as Nintendo. It's actually a way of Japanese communication where they beat around the bush to try to make a point at something in the center. There's an interesting article on tofugu about Japanese arguments, thought and expression.

However, their big problem is that this style of communication works in Japan and not in the West. All three should get their shit together and have a Western PR department speak to the Western press. It seems like common sense, but they don't do it for mostly likely financial reasons and in the end they look like morons at the end of the day.

BTW. I'm not singling out Nintendo. This article is about them so I'm sticking to the topic.

@Maui_Lion @freedom01 they brought the tanking disaster themselves, when the Wii U released, they hardly released any games for it, all they concentrated on was the 3DS. I own 2 Wii U's on US and another JP, and usually the JP version has more games on it due to 3rd party support, but even the 3rd party support from Japan is close to none

The Sega team doing their 3D remakes could have pulled this off on 3DS fine... on top of making it look amazing in 3D. 3D+Parallax Scrolling is a match made in heaven.
