New Final Fantasy 7 Remake Trailer Revealed During PS4's State Of Play Presentation

Here's another look at the long-awaited remake.

Sony capped off its latest State of Play presentation with a new trailer for Square Enix's highly anticipated Final Fantasy VII remake. This marks the first new footage we've seen of the game in quite some time, and while brief, it offers a tantalizing look at how the remake is shaping up.

The trailer, which you can watch above, shows off what appears to be footage from the early portion of the game. We see Cloud and other members of AVALANCHE infiltrating a plant as part of the famous bombing mission sequence. The video also gives us a quick glimpse at the game's revamped battle system. Despite its fairly brief duration, the trailer ends with a promise that more details will come in June, presumably as part of Square Enix's E3 press conference, which takes place on Monday, June 10, at 6 PM PT / 9 PM ET.

Now Playing: Final Fantasy VII: Remake - Official State Of Play Trailer

Following the presentation, the official Final Fantasy Twitter account shared a message from Final Fantasy VII remake director Tetsuya Nomura, reaffirming that fans won't have to wait much longer for more info about the game. "Most of the plans are already in place in the run up to launch, so please bear with us a little longer until we can release more information next month," the message read.

The Final Fantasy VII remake was first announced during Sony's E3 2015 presentation, although since then, details about the game have been scarce. Nomura was directing the game concurrently with another long-awaited title, Kingdom Hearts III, although the developer claimed that directing them both made his life easier. Kingdom Hearts III finally launched earlier this year, although the Final Fantasy VII remake is still without a release date.

Sony's latest State of Play presentation was only roughly 10 minutes long, although it game us a look at quite a few games during that time. Along with new footage of the MediEvil remake, the presentation revealed new details about Monster Hunter World's Iceborne expansion and showed off a new Predator game from Friday the 13th developer IllFonic.

Is this still using the Unreal Engine or did they go back to the drawing board? The game looks amazing! Had goosebumps when Aeris talked and Cloud brushed her off...

@zanarkand102: They sure seemed happy with how much Unreal has improved development efficiency when they first announced it (which is something Squeenix needs BAD), so I don't see why not.

@rickjamesia: You're missing the point. The point wasn't that I disagreed with him, but that there's no point in making comments like that because I can make the exact same comments opposed to his and be just as correct.

And you're actually only half-right. People always tell me FF was the "experimental" franchise. Always trying something new. They actually started the ATB thing (again, so I'm told). But they also adopted popular trends. This is true.

But here's the thing. Those games were GOOD. FF went from trend chasing to trend setting. Everyone else copied them, not the other way around. But even during this golden era, their action game were awful (outside studios being the exception). This is still true to this day, and now people who didn't even like those old FF games are making FF games. Being an ARPG isn't the problem. The problem is that the change is being made for all the wrong reasons, and we have already seen the result: FF15.

Why in the world would anyone want to see a proven BAD formula used in place of a proven GOOD formula? That's the point. That has always been the point. Nobody is saying we don't want ARPGs. We're just saying we'd rather have GOOD turn-based RPGs over BAD action based ones.

@REDShadowG: Dude, I guarantee that YOU are the one who is in the minority here.

Sales suggest that the majority of FF15's sales were the result of pre-release hype. Sales went off a cliff shortly after. So badly, in fact, that Squeenix was willing to cancel DLC just days after they announced it. Clearly FF15's "new" fans weren't enough to support the game. Do you know how shameful it is in Japan to cancel something you promised to develop? How bad did sales have to be for them to be willing to do that? They must have been really bad.

@Barighm: If you notice, whenever he posts in a topic about games it's just trolling. He deliberately attempts to insult swaths of people with generalizations and then gets indignant when challenged.

@REDShadowG: You mean to say based off of your comments alone you don't count yourself toxic? You really aren't very self-aware are you?

Turn-based combat is still alive and well in critically acclaimed games such as the Persona series and others. Just because you have some childish grudge against it doesn't make those who enjoy it toxic nor does it make them insignificant, something you falsely claimed to prop up your own immature claims.

@Barighm: When someone says they won't bother reading what you wrote and instead resorts to insults like that, you know who the truly toxic ones are.

And anyways, when I look at how well received some certain games are compared to each other, I wonder what even this buffoon is talking about.

FF vii is an above average jrpg but I will concede that the music is some of the best in any game ever.

This is the FF that went off the rails. It tried to be Phantasy Star and failed.

@millionsedge: As someonw who's enjoyed both series, no. It's not. It's really, really not. FF7 was enjoyable, but Phantasy Star IV was a better game all the way around except possibly in the music department.

@jwrebholz: I have to interject: FF7 was a new breed of game which inspired many other games and was the catalyst for many conversations within casual and hardcore gamers lives when it released. PSO was a good game in it's own right but it has never been something which has drawn much attention even during it's heyday.

To paraphrase: FF7 is a game in the legendary status despite being over 20 years old whereas PSO is likely something which will be forgotten about unless Sega release something very special in the franchise which it seems is very unlikely.

If there is a lack of 'extensive' gameplay footage in June then I think it will be safe to say that it will be available for PS5. A game like this, just as the original did, would likely sell the new console in droves.

Aside the very legit concerns about the gameplay style, I hadn't given much thought about the actual voice acting. I recently tried to play FFX again, and I just couldn't. The voiceover is terrible, as is the dialogue. Thing is, these games were made in an earlier, more innocent age for gamers, and they don't translate very well to today's standards. I fear this remake may not learn from that, like the retarded voiceover and dialogue of FFXIII, and may try to adapt the very same lines, word for word, gesture for gesture, that worked 20+ years ago.

I think that they should add an alternate combat system, one that's turn-based. Something like what Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire did recently.

Crisis Core proved that real time combat could be done right in a FF game.

FFXV proved that real time combat could be done wrong in a FF game.

@tonyleo01: That might actually happen. Now that they have the assets, they could always rejig them into a turn based style, or overlay them onto the original game like whatever method the Secret of Mana remake used.

Unlikely, but it could.

@Jago-Vs-Fulgore: It's not the same. FF7 relied so much on static bitmap image renders to make up the backdrops. You can't just pump in more "resolutions" to make the game magically look like it's been made recently. I know there have been modding efforts to use AI to "sharpen" up the background images but they still look kinda weird.

FF9 probably has the best examples of AI reconstruct images of the backdrops. I'd play that.

@gotrekfabian: I've seen some of these mods. They are okay. FF8 looks super creepy since they have less "stylized" aesthetic lol. I think FF9 is probably the best in term of graphical mods treatment.

Tbh, I have not played the original FF7, got never into it due to lack of console access.

But merely everyone I have talked to have told me good things about it. After watching this trailer and the previous ones, still not able to dig it enough. Can anyone recommend me to some video on youtube or something, which explains this. The game or why is it hyped all over the gaming world.

@reddevilofhell: There have been only a few games in history that made me in awe of how good their graphics were. FF7 was one of those games.

But if you play it now, it looks awful. You had to be there.
