New PS4 Delivers "Ultra-High Definition Resolution Graphics," Report Says

Yet another report claims Sony is working on a more powerful PlayStation 4.

Though Sony has yet to make an official announcement, the evidence for a more powerful PlayStation 4 console continues to mount. The Wall Street Journal today backed up what reports from Kotaku and Eurogamer said earlier: Sony is working on a new version of the PS4 that can handle "higher-end gaming experiences." This includes virtual reality, the site said, citing sources.

This new system, which will reportedly boast "enhanced graphics and power," will live alongside the existing PS4, with games working for both platforms, according to the WSJ.

No Caption Provided

"Existing PlayStation 4 owners would need to buy the new model to take full advantage of the enhanced graphics and power," it said. "Though it is likely that the current model and the coming one would share the same software catalog."

The WSJ also reports that the new console--which wasn't given a name but is apparently being referred to as the PS4 4K--will be announced before the October launch of PlayStation VR, sources said. The system will be able to power "ultra-high definition resolution graphics."

Sony itself has admitted that PlayStation VR, which is powered by the PS4, may be technically inferior to Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, which run on higher-end PCs. The improved PS4 would help close the gap, the WSJ said.

It's also claimed in the WSJ report that Sony's ambition with the new system is "to capture gamers willing to pay for a richer gaming environment, including a high-end virtual-reality experience."

Analysts quoted in the WSJ's story today said continuing to offer the standard PS4 alongside the more powerful unit will help Sony on its path to giving players--casual and hardcore alike--more options in the PlayStation ecosystem.

A price for the new, more powerful PS4 was not mentioned in this report.

Sony may not be alone in releasing new gaming hardware. Recently, Xbox boss Phil Spencer teased that, "You'll actually see us come out with new hardware capability during a generation allowing the same games to run backward and forward compatible."

Traditionally, console gamers have to wait many years for new hardware. For example, the PlayStation 3 was released in 2006, with the PS4 coming in 2013. The Xbox 360 launched in 2005, while the Xbox One came out in 2013.

Sony declined to comment.

If this report is accurate, including the pre-October announcement, one possibly venue for the reveal could be E3 in June. Keep checking back with GameSpot for more on Sony's hardware plans.

Better make an official announcement soon Sony especially since I heard a rumor that you will price this at $400-$500. I'd sure hate to be that guy that buys the weaker PS4 only for you to announce the PS4K a month or 2 later. As for me only Gamestop offering a trade deal that gets me the new system for $100 can get me to buy this.

@ghost140: If I was Sony, I wouldn't want to confirm anything until I really had to. As soon as I said there was a new, better PS4 coming, sales of the current PS4 would drop right off.

@Mogan: I doubt Sony will confirm a thing, I only see this as a bad move as it will splinter the market and that would be regressive. It doesn't make sense to release a more powerful PS4 and still have the same nomenclature it's going to create confusion with consumers. They should just release a better designed PS4 with fixes for the issues and better power usage like they have done in the past. A different SKU is only going to muck up the waters, unless ony is attempting to match Nintendo's NX release and go in stride with Nintendo, but still it will have all the same peripherals play the same games, why would folks buy into it if there is no perceptible difference? 4K TV's are not common in homes, those that have them they are rather small I have exactly one friend with a 4K curved TV and it's about 37" or so. I have a 55" 1080p, no chance am I getting a 4K TV of this size with those prices. Sony really should not create distortion in their own product cycle.

What if all this is wrong and PS4.5 is a bring in your old PS4 and pay a little on the nose and we'll upgrade you to the PS4.5, now that I can see as making more sense, Sony get's to pull in old models, consumers get a newer model at a reduced price and we can all go home happy. Still will enjoy my 1080p though, but if the new console can push 30fps games to 60 then I will make the upgrade.

It's just "The New PS4".

Sony copying Nintendo again, as usual.

@Elranzer: at least the Ps4 has decent games, 3rd party support, a great controller, comes with integrated wifi and an ethernet port, has a decent online store, the controller has a decent battery life....you get the point?

Pretty obvious this was going to happen when Sony announced the PSVR. I don't own a PS4 yet, but I'll buy the PS4K when it gets released. I don't even own a 4K TV - but I'll be satisfied if the PS4K can play existing PS4 games at native 1080p and 60FPS.

Lots of people say "I don't even own a 4K TV so it doesn't matter" but they fail to see the bigger picture. If it can game in even 4K 30fps that guarantees a 1080p 60fps experience. So even if you don't have a 4K TV it would still be a considerable upgrade.

@clugaman: Yeah but the chances are it won't be able to even produce 30fps at 4K, unless graphics are turned all the way down to lowest settings.

@clugaman: There's basically no chance that it will run 4K at 30 frames. Take a look at this: http://www.extremetech.com/gaming/225476-playstation-4k-is-reportedly-real-but-what-kind-of-performance-can-we-expect

That's a $700 graphics card getting 18 FPS on a 3 year-old game. Also, that card is too big to fit in a PS4 and generates too much heat for a console to disperse effectively. The most likely outcome is that it upscales to 4K.

While it will almost certainly have the power to run current games at higher FPS, those games are already *locked* at 30 FPS. So only if devs patch them will it be possible to run at 60 FPS. But even then, as Stebsis says, the physics is often locked to FPS.

@clugaman: Yes it guarantees, but do you really think Sony is gonna give that choice? They don't care about framerate because they can't sell that, if they can slap 4K sticker on every game then they're gonna keep that but still lock games at 30 because it's a console. And that'd be more work for devs too if the physics and whatnot are tied to framerate which they often are in console games

@Stebsis: Sony is already trying its damndest to give us that choice. One example is Uncharted 4 running multiplayer at 900p 60fps. PS4 games are already trying to hit 1080p 60fps and some have, but it would mean 100% of games would then be able to hit 1080p 60fps no problem. Existing games are existing games. Who knows if they will run better or be unlocked. But this move looks to the future.

1080p is more than enough, most people don't even have 4k tvs, if sony want to make a ps4.5, they should focus on frame rate, some games struggle to even maintain 30fps

Oh, and game over NX. If NX is indeed more powerful than PS4 then it is unlikely to be more powerful than UHD PS4.

I don't have a 4k tv, therefore it doesn't really matter. Graphics are nice as they currently are. As for the VR, I'm not biting on the hook until there are various great games available.

If this is true, how does the game development process for this and the original ps4 work exactly ?

Way to divide the audience sony.

@HesamB: Like between PC and consoles. The lowest common denominator will prevail more often than not, but you will have more graphics options.

@HesamB: I think it's quite possible to design this so that there's no audience-division.

The key, of course, is that Sony has pretty much absolute control over both the hardware and what devs can do on the platform (all software releases are checked by and must be explicitly OK'd by Sony).

(1) Make this exactly the same hardware-wise, except with a beefier GPU and maybe CPU speed Make sure all differences are either completely transparent to software or very easy to abstract away in libraries, e.g. things like texture resolution.

(2) Make very strict rules for devs that games must run acceptably on both models, e.g. a minimum of 30 FPS on the existing hardware, and in general only allow changes that are related to resolution and frame-rate. I suppose they could for instance allow some extra "sugar-coating" on the higher-end mode, like higher-poly models etc, as long as the lower-end experience was still good, but they'd have to keep an eye on this, and simple differences like texture resolution are easier to police.

(3) Maybe enhance the existing software infrastructure so that any higher-resolution textures used for the higher-end model can be downloaded separately or something, so that the download sizes don't increase for users that can't take advantage of them.

@snogglethorpe: If they hold a strict view on what is acceptable on their platforms, then yes, it won't split the community. But if they don't, over time there will also be gameplay differences. Not just cosmetic graphics ones.

@Kjranu: Initially yes but not in the long term. Games may run on both systems for sure. But development will be focused on the higher end model. Eventually you'll find a situation where even gameplay features are affected on the lower end system, not just graphics. Look what happened with GTA V and Shadow of Mordor on the old gen. The gameplay features were toned down because of memory limitations. Eventually after a few years it'll happen between the PS4 and the PS4 4K as well.

@PJDSouza: I think a CPU boost would be reasonable. The Xbox One has a clock speed of 1.75 GHz compared with the PS4's 1.6 GHz. If the improved design allows further overclocking they should improve the speed as much as possible. Increasing the RAM or GPU wouldn't be wise but an improved processor would allow for a smoother experience without having a huge gap between the vanilla console.

@jayz0ned: They'll probably push it as far as they can in terms of CPU, GPU and RAM within the budget constraits of the console price. They'll be aware that Microsoft are also dong a half gen upgrade and Microsoft won't want to be outdone for the second time this gen in terms of hardware. It'll be interesting to see the final configs for both consoles.

@Orgil220: The difference is that PC games are optimised to as broad a range of hardware as possible, it's factored in. Consoles are optimised to a very specific set of hardware. Now developers of Playstation games have to optimise for 2 sets of hardware.

@pongley: Well just like pc games PS4K will have few additional graphical settings in each game's menu, like AA, 30fps or 60fps or 4K maybe. It is no big deal. It is not like developing for xbox and ps4 at the same times.
