New Smash Bros. overhauls edge-grabbing--how will it affect gameplay?

Director Masahiro Sakurai confirms there are "many changes" being made to attack and defense options for edge-grabbing technique.

The "edge-grabbing" or "edge-hogging" technique from past Super Smash Bros. titles has been overhauled for the upcoming Super Smash Bros. game for Wii U and 3DS, director Masahiro Sakurai announced today on Miiverse.

No Caption Provided

This more advanced technique, featured in games like Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Brawl, allows players to hold onto a ledge in an effort to thwart the return move of another player. But this is changing for the upcoming game, Sakurai said.

"There are many changes being made to attack and defense options for grabbing edges. In this picture (at left), Link is actually trumping Mario's grab," he said.

Other changes include:

  • Air time and accumulated damage will determine your period of invincibility while hanging on an edge.
  • Grab controls will no longer be affected by whether you have above or below 100% damage.

It sounds like edge-grabbing, considered by some to be a cheap move, will be more difficult to pull off in the new Super Smash Bros. game for Wii U and 3DS. It remains to be seen how the changes might affect competitive play.

The new Super Smash Bros. game for Wii U and 3DS launches sometime in 2014. Cross-platform play between the two systems is not supported. For more, check out GameSpot's previous coverage of the fighting game.

So they're making characters automatically knock their opponent off the ledge (presumably if they have more damage than the opponent)? How about having it take skill to get back onto the stage?

The edge hog "technique" is pretty silly, but I'd much rather see them remove ledge invincibility completely and allow all attacks to cancel (MANUALLY, aka with the grab button) into a ledge grab, so you can hit your opponent with a regular move and still grab the ledge if you're close enough. Unfortunately they're trying to make the game more casual, so I don't see any chance of ledge invincibility going away, or having to manually grab the ledge.

Balancing a mechanic that was otherwise broken in Brawl to be utilized by skillful people is "ruining the fun"?

Man this game is so overhyped. Every new character that gets announced we have to hear about it and now we're getting articles about how edge grabbing is overhauled. What's next? You going to let me know what soundtracks the game will have?

Because they totally didn't do the same with Smash Brawl. You should've been visiting IGN during the period of The Last of Us, even after the game was out, they'd do an article on practically everything in the game, it was kind of annoying.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>Same thing. Some games get TOO much attention. Yes I realize this is one of the big ones for Nintendo fanboys but these constant articles about pretty much nothing or things that really just belong in a developer diary are getting old.

This is not only a big one for "Nintendo fanboys" but a big one for gamers in general. If you don't care about it, ignore it. Not every day will have some major news story, plus this is a rather big change in the mechanics so I like that I'm being updated in things like this so I'm aware of it by the time the game comes out.

Not sure who's worse. Eddie trolling fanboys, or fanboys knowing that Eddie is trolling them and calls Eddie a troll in every post, thus being trolled.

Of course everybody is focusing on the new consoles now. When the hype dies down and things return to normal, Nintendo console will start selling again. I for one have Xbone and still play my wii U wind waker and 3D world. It is just a good change in gaming.

<< LINK REMOVED >>This is actually a popular game used in video game tournaments. For people who compete in these kind of events this is definitely news as the older games made edge grabbing a very popular tactic.

It's an update on a mega popular franchise. IGN did the same thing, plus it's good to keep people updated so that when the game does come out, they're already aware of certain changes in the mechanics.

This one's a trumph card on Nintendo's hands, possibly one of the main reasons people still buy their consoles, so they cannot afford to screw this one out, literally speaking even.

Its good to see they are fixing the cheapness from Brawl. Edge Grabbing now needs skill to use and being able to cancel others edge grabbing if your more healthy is great, i can see it as a buff to Yoshi and Olimar

It's definitely nice that they are taking the time to tweak things like this, although I do hope they cover edge guarding as well because there have been too many characters over the year that can get a KO on you at 20% since they can spam you off the map until you die...*cough cough Marth*

If the game is as slow as brawl, I'll pass. Melee was still my favorite.

Nevermind, I looked at some footage of both games on Youtube, and I retract my previous statement. I guess I hadn't played Melee recently enough to remember how fast it is. I prefer the speed that Brawl runs at, however, as it's easier to maintain control over the characters and the animations look smoother.

Is this what were gonna be doing from now on? Talk about if a Wii U game is gonna bring sales instead of being hyped for the goddamn gaem? is this how low weve gotten?
