New Smash Bros. overhauls edge-grabbing--how will it affect gameplay?

Director Masahiro Sakurai confirms there are "many changes" being made to attack and defense options for edge-grabbing technique.

The "edge-grabbing" or "edge-hogging" technique from past Super Smash Bros. titles has been overhauled for the upcoming Super Smash Bros. game for Wii U and 3DS, director Masahiro Sakurai announced today on Miiverse.

This more advanced technique, featured in games like Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Brawl, allows players to hold onto a ledge in an effort to thwart the return move of another player. But this is changing for the upcoming game, Sakurai said.

"There are many changes being made to attack and defense options for grabbing edges. In this picture (at left), Link is actually trumping Mario's grab," he said.

Other changes include:

  • Air time and accumulated damage will determine your period of invincibility while hanging on an edge.
  • Grab controls will no longer be affected by whether you have above or below 100% damage.

It sounds like edge-grabbing, considered by some to be a cheap move, will be more difficult to pull off in the new Super Smash Bros. game for Wii U and 3DS. It remains to be seen how the changes might affect competitive play.

I hope the game has characters and secrets in it that we aren't expecting. Otherwise, what will be the point if the game is admittedly barebones albeit in HD now? They already said there's no story mode, we also know now that the 3DS and Wii U versions have the same amount of characters...and that worries me greatly.

Sakurai is being very stingy with reveals and only post screenshots because he doesnt want secrets spoiled. Have you seen Kid Icarus Uprising? It's a 3DS game and it was chock full of content. No doubt new Smash will be as well considering how massive Brawl was.

There's no STORY mode, aka a story filled romp through generic and bland level designs. There is still an Adventure mode, maybe itll be an upgrade of Melee where it had stages actually based on Nintendo series. The only 2 things that came out of the Subspace that were good was the interactive cutscenes and Bosses. No word on Bosses but Sakurai is working hard on all the newcomers to have a CGI cutscene interacting with the fighters and so far they were amazing, what with Kirby Interrupting a Mario kart race, Megaman vs Nintendo, and Mario Link and Kirby playing Wii Fit, its the definition of Nintendo characters interacting with each other.

Also so what if 3DS and Wii U are sharing characters? Have you forgotten how BIG Kid Icarus Uprising is? You can put a lot of things into that little handheld. And the roster is focusing to actually be diverse and filled with less clones this time.

So you'd have liked for there to have only been multiplayer according—although I love the multiplayer—which would've been ridiculous considering the game isn't aimed at having a full fledged multiplayer such as games like Battlefield and COD, which could easily lose their half assed story modes.

Sounds good to me Sakurai. Now only if we can find out which of the new Pokemon are coming into SSB. I know Pikachu and Jigglypuff are coming back but all I want really to come back is Mewtwo.

lol edge hogging. It works but it has drawbacks. Interested to see what techniques will come. Maybe a edge stomp or the ability to push someone on the edge off so you can climb on.
