New Xbox One S TV Ad Touts 4K Blu-Ray Player

"Smaller, sleeker, sharper."

Microsoft has released a new TV commercial for the Xbox One S. The 30-second spot shows off the slimmed-down system (it's 40 percent smaller than the original Xbox One) and also specifically mentions that it's the "only console with 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray" for its physical and streaming media.

The video also touts the Xbox One S's high dynamic range support. A game must support HDR (not every game does) and you will need a 4K TV to make the most of this. Microsoft's recently released Forza Horizon 3 supports HDR, while the upcoming Gears of War 4 shooter also will.

Sony's PlayStation 4 was updated recently to support HDR on all systems going back to 2013 launch consoles. The $400 PS4 Pro, which comes out in November, also supports HDR. It does not, however, have a 4K Blu-ray player, though it will support 4K streaming media from Netflix and YouTube.

The Xbox One S launched in August and also comes with a new Bluetooth-enabled Xbox One controller that also features textured grips. You can read our review of the console here.

If you're in the market for an Xbox One S, now seems like a good time, as you can get a free game of your choosing when you buy a new system--but only for a limited time.

The Xbox One is on a roll, having outsold the rival PS4 in the US in July and August.

@jerjef: So reply to them! My comment is about some who claim the X1 S is better than the Pro, The way I see it is that, both the Pro and Scorpio will be powerful enough for this gen but games is what will eventually win gamers over.

@jerjef: I thought it was the xbox fans comparing x1s to Pro? It's rediculous either way... the only common thing between them is both can stream 4k video... oh and play games.

Edit: forgot about the price comparison... that's pretty close I guess.

@jerjef: You can only compare the best of whatever any manufacturer currently offers as their flagship. Since the Pro is in pallets ready to ship to retailers and will be in gamers hands soon it is naturally the next option to compare what Xbox model currently exists and that is the S. The Scorpio is only in planning stages, over a year away and not even guaranteed to be released. Microsoft's track record leave the door wide open for the Scorpio to be delayed or even canceled. Not saying I want this but anyone with any common sense that has paid attention to Microsoft's actions the last few years must agree that there is less than 100% chance we will actually see the Scorpio console by holiday next year. Which rules it out entirely as a viable device to be introduced into console comparisons.

Here is my point you buy a console to play games because you are a gamer I will be taking the ps4 pro over the xbox s because graphics and resolutions are more important to me than watching movies on discs, because guess what I buy consoles to play games not watch movies, now when the scorpio comes out things will get interesting I think sony might come out with the ps5 in 2018 to get one up on microsoft.

@iammcgruber: For sure I am going to be getting it cant wait to play gears of war 4 in 4k with hdr, but in the meantime I can play battlefield one in upscaled 4k with hdr and the play pro can give me that.

@yukushi: To each their own. Though a lot of people were really happy when various media formats were accepted in game consoles. First audio CDs, then DVDs, then blu-rays and now 4K blu-rays. At the end of the day it adds value to the console by being an all in one device. There aren't many 4K blu-ray players out there so this is the way a lot of people are going. Also many people don't like having multiple devices sitting under their TV with the exception of the elite audiophiles types.

@sladakrobot: why woudnt sony release there native 4k machine - theres multi steam machines - yeah they may not sell but least it gives the consumer options - and sony will do that- give gamers the option - also there will be trade in deals - the console market is changing - if apple can release a new ipad/ phone with better specs - new tvs come out every year

why cant you get your narrow mind around the fact sony wont let ms have the only native 4k machine on the market

@Flyin3lvl: I told you already once that it doesnt make ANY sence from a business perspective to release another device 2018.
Sony will eventually bring something out which is up to date BUT NOT 2018 or 2019.
Sony will piss of all the ppl who bought a PS4pro who believe they got something which will hold a while.

@sladakrobot: For $400, I'm ok with a new one every 3 years... especially since it's not mandatory(so if my friends don't want to upgrade, I can still play the games with them). Plus, I usually need a new controller after 3 years, so that's about $50 alone... so it's really only $350 every 3 years for me ;)

@sladakrobot: Actually I am I dont want to wait 8 years to get better graphics on my games if they keeping putting out consoles fast very soon you will be playing games in 4k at 60fps wouldnt that be amazing.

@MetaMods: because you can spend $400 on a new video card or $400 on a new video card, cpu, ram, hard drive, etc etc. Really don't feel like upgrading piece by piece. It's not hard to understand... people don't wanna build a PC, or ticker with settings, or not be sure if their game will work with their setup, or keep the viruses off it, or deal with windows 10 pop ups and bloated crap that comes with the OS.

2. Half people who plays game should know hardware, so I am not sure what you meant ticker with setting.

3. not sure what will work? yeah that why there is list of requirment display on Steam or box art that tell you what is minimum requirment to play this game on PC.

4. if you are a gamer, you shouldnt get any virus on your PC, unless you are that stupid.

5. Windows 10? please there is 8.1 and 7, Linux, and Mac who needs 10? when you only can play few exclusive MS made PC.

@MetaMods: Ok, video cards are cheaper than they use to be per performance (bang for buck). I was an IT manager for a international company before going into the medical field, so it's not that I don't know how to build a PC. And a lot of console gamers do too. Is lazy a better weird to use than stupid? Lol, or we just have better stuff to do with our time and want the simplicity of a console.

@jerjef: I understand what he's saying but maybe it needs to be reworded: I want the best graphics that a console currently offers. PC offers better graphics, but people don't wanna mess with all the other stuff about PC. They need to release a PC that is purely for gaming... no ms paintbrush, calculator, 1 month trials of software, etc. But I guess that's basically what an xbox is, without the ability to change out parts.
