New Xbox One/PC Features Not in Response to PS4's Lead, Microsoft Says

"Sony is doing incredibly well with the PS4..."

At E3 2016 last month, Microsoft made some major announcements related to its platform strategy going forward. One of these is a new feature called Xbox Play Anywhere, which will bring Xbox One and PC closer than before.

Now, Xbox boss Phil Spencer has spoken up to say Microsoft's efforts to partially unite console and PC are not in response to Sony's commanding lead in the Xbox One vs. PlayStation 4 race.

ReCore will be the first Xbox Play Anywhere game
ReCore will be the first Xbox Play Anywhere game

"Sony is doing incredibly well with the PS4 but they're doing something fundamentally different from us," he told The Guardian. "We're not building a strategy in response to what they're doing; we're building a response to what I see customers and gamers asking us for."

For its part, Sony's Andrew House recently suggested that the company is not going to follow in Microsoft's footsteps and unite PlayStation 4 and PC.

"I always hesitate to be drawn into discussions of someone else's strategy," he said during a meeting with analysts and investors this month. "I'm more than happy to talk about our own strategy. Yes, there was a big emphasis from the folks at Microsoft on Xbox and PC cross-play. It remains to be seen whether there is latent large consumer demand for that.

"But we don't see it as really effecting or prompting any change in our thought process and strategy," he continued. "We've always tended to believe that a proprietary ecosystem offering a very well crafted, unified client experience is the way to go, and that sort of remains our strategy."

Also in the interview, Spencer said Microsoft is not trying to "turn PC gamers into console gamers or console gamers into PC gamers." The Play Anywhere feature is all about choice and catching up with other forms of media.

"So if you're at school and want to play a couple of rounds of a game and then you go back home and want to continue on your couch, that seems normal," he said. "Every other kind of media--your music, your movies--everything else works that way."

As part of Play Anywhere, users can buy a game digitally on Xbox One and get the PC version free or vice versa. As Spencer mentioned, your progress will move with you wherever you're playing, though there isn't always going to be cross-play support.

Play Anywhere kicks off in September with Mega Man designer Keiji Inafune's ReCore and continues with Forza Horizon 3 later in the month, while October's Gears of War 4 will also support the feature. Some non-Microsoft games, including We Happy Few and Ark: Survival Evolved, are also included in the Play Anywhere catalog.

In other news about Play Anywhere, Microsoft recently cleared up some confusion about the supported games, saying only the ones discussed on stage at E3 are confirmed for the program so far. A blog post from Microsoft previously stated that that all future Microsoft-published games would be Play Anywhere titles.

Literally everything they've done with XBOX up to this point has been in direct response to SONY's PS4. There's nothing to suggest this move is any different. From the 'features' they removed before launch, to changing the way they report earnings, to backward compatibility....wow this guy thinks we're not paying attention.

Yeh I'm sure a lot of people can install and play games on a school computer, what a ridiculous statement, it isn't play anywhere, it's play at home, both PC and console are traditionally home systems, minus a laptop which is the only way to play anywhere, if you enjoy a crazy hot laptop that can't do half it's desktop counterpart can.

Customers didn't ask for Xbox One games on the Windows Store for PC....

Customers asked for Microsoft to make games and have them on multiple PC platforms like Steam and original titles ported to places like gog.com.

We do not like being forced to buy the game from a terrible store and we don't really have much interest in Xbox ports.

What happened to all the great PC games you used to publish? Instead we got crap like Flight... instead of FSXI.

@Terrorantula: It has improved and if you talk to experts potentially windows store has huge advantages of steam. They are both DRM anyway so there is little choice. Much better to buy and support gog.com so there remains a DRM free solution.

In any case if it's the only way i can play unlocked framerate Xbox games it's better than nothing.

Forza is awesome on PC and i've enjoyed it alot more than the Xbox version plus it was a bonus it was free of charge.

Why can't people just think that companies can do things on their own now and come up with their own ideas.

I want the cross play stuff for sports games, like NBA 2K etc, because getting games on PC like sports games, unless its FIFA can be a drag to play online. Cross play using an Xbox controller on PC, would be beneficial for me, JUST to have the console player base to play against, not just PC users. Not to mention the Xbox exclusive games coming out on PC. Hopefully Halo collections and gears of war 2 and 3 and Red Dead Redemption etc, will follow.

look Microsoft is has always a pc company first and gaming last in my opinion. the fact they are doing this is a great move not motivated by sony. Sony for it;s part can't do this anyway as they would need a third party company to do so and i doubt that they will release that much control.

Umm... so you're doing this why again? So that people with controllers can get demolished by someone with a keyboard & mouse setup?

@djwood84: Uhhh what? Competitive play doesn't work cross platform, for example in gears 4 you can play any mode with pc gamers minus the vs mode. You can play co op, horde even custom matches but you dont play online vs together.

Xbox play anywhere is more about being able to buy one copy that works on pc and Xbox, rather than owning a ps4 and a pc and having to buy one or the other, or two of the same game. The biggest thing here is ms got rid of that issue.

Plus there are lots of games where vs modes will work cross platform , like in a fighting or racing game.

"Every other kind of media--your music, your movies--everything else works that way." - that makes sense. But Killer Instinct is already PC/Xbox crossplay isn't it? I think QUantum BReak is too. I guess they are not under the PLAY ANYWHERE brand though.

Sony's Andrew House recently suggested that the company is not going to follow in Microsoft's footsteps and unite PlayStation 4 and PC. Occurs they not gonna do it, they are selling PS4 like cup cakes and they are even doing that by charging suckers to play games that they already own in other system. Why even bother doing anything deferent? Thumbs up Sony!

@angrycreep: As an owner of all consoles and a pc, to this day I still don't understand why I bought or anyone would buy a PS4. I have one. Bloodborne is PS4's best game. I hated Uncharted 4 as it was the most boring game in the series next to Uncharted 1. The game play was the most repetitive, and lack luster ever in a Uncharted game. There's nothing new except the grapling hook. I look on metacritic and I see all these 10s and I think to myself I have always been an Uncharted fan but Uncharted 4 is NO 10. 6-7 yes. Graphics dont carry a game to 10, the story is good but nothing ground breaking. U4 got a 10 thanks to the hype. So anyway outside of those 2 games the rest of the ok games I can get on PC which run and look 3x better.

@skiggy34: I agree with you on Uncharted 4 for the most part, the story just isn't compelling aside from the side quest regarding the pirates (that was interesting) but outside of the grapple which has been much better done in other games it just offered nothing new and the combat was almost always more of a chore than fun. This was a great opportunity to really ramp up the gameplay and put some really deep and interesting puzzles into the mix but they got lazy and made puzzles suitable for a six year old just to pad out the game, outside of the open world sections driving around in the boat and jeep it was just too much of more of the same yet again.

How could they leave Chloe out of the entire game when she was a the best character besides Sully, even he is underutilised in this adventure.

The graphics were indeed stunning for the most part but shadows were extremely weak which let down the overall appearance and the framerate often tanked as well , yet oddly often when it wasn't even a time much was going on.

However Bloodborne i couldn't stand at all , it was just a clunky mess with repetitive textures. Even the original Dark Souls and especially Demon Souls is far more fun. Never saw what anyone saw in Bloodborne, worst present i ever got getting game of the year edition for my birthday.

@skiggy34: You are trying too hard and yet, you ain't fooling anyone.

Can only name Uncharted games and Bloodborne, seems legit /sarcasm

Meanwhile I'm loving PS4 games such as Guilty Gear Xrd: Revelator, Tearaway: Unfolded, Ratchet and Clank (they developed the well received Xbox exclusive Sunset Overdrive), and still my favorite PS4 exclusive; Disgaea 5.

All very well reviewed by the way.

As for Bloodborne, despite being a very good game, it was far too bare-boned and had poorly structured PvP. If you consider it PS4s best game? I'm assuming it's your only game, if that_

I don't give a **** for Uncharted, but seeing as your entire opinion is pulled from Metacritic. . That only proves you haven't tried it. Nothing more pathetic than a Tryhard.

I've nothing against Xbox gamers, but guys like @angrycreep and you seem full of crap, and nothing's worse than fanboi parasites.

@skiggy34: You're full of crap, there is less reason to own an XBox One over a PS4 though. Xbox One games are now available on PC, so that means you don't need an Xbox One to play any of their upcoming games. Find a PC that can play all the games available on PS4. You people and your BS reaching biased thoughts "why anyone would buy a PS4?" unless you are incompetent the PS4 and Wii U are the only systems left that have games that are only available on those machines. Can you say the same about the Xbox One? No, so folks with money and brains will buy the machine that gets the most out of their investment. You're whole reasoning is garbage biased diatribe filth.

Why in the world would your subjective take on UC4 mean anything to the vast majority of people in the world, it makes your point even less sensible. Can you play UC4 anywhere else? Your post is just rubbish from stem to stern. I'll wait for you to go find a PC that can play all the PS4 games ok. Good luck.

@SavageEvil: It's funny that you say this cause you shut him right up. If he really does have all consoles his xbox just became a brick due to all exclusives lmao... That being said I had an xbox one and really loved it but knowing this I ditched it the second EB games gave me 300+100(for 5 games) towards a new ps4 at 429.99... So I basically spent 30 on a new PS4, I'm having an awesome time and always planned to get a ps4 eventually, but now that I have it, I also see no reason for xbox one anymore... unless 1) Scorpio is really affordable 4k gaming 2)though unlikely because of backlash they do keep exclusives on xbox or 3) they pull a sleezy move and include all elements of exclusives EXCEPT competitive multiplayer on PC (not horde and coop stuff). Suffice to say, might as well just build a PC (if everything does work) in this case now enjoy all those xbox exclusives with amazing frames, res and textures (+free online? unless you have to have gold on your pc too???). I'm waiting though and all that I missed on PS4 should keep me busy till then :D

It's a good idea for Microsoft to increase software units but I don't buy the 'got nothing to do with PlayStation' talk. No offence Phil, but even if you believed that. . It's not 'the goal' the Microsoft PR have continued to tell us. 'Winning' is a factor. But 'winning' what is the real question?

For at least two console generations a Microsoft PR guy screams, "we want to win" religiously. Now I won't call Spencer on this, as he seems to be correcting a lot of wrong; furthermore he doesn't come across as fanboi cancer. And he's gotten me hyped for P.C./X1 cross-play. But pretty sure I've heared the "winning" quote a_lot since the Xbox Ones launch.

So my belief is they'd take cross-platform sales as 'winning', if it surpasses PS4 numbers. And though I'll at least use the App to grab Scalebound on P.C. I'm not sure if that's a 'win', though bet they brag about it once it's a reality.

Anywho I won't question the buisness strategy they're cooking. . It works for me after all. . I just want good games.

I don't buy it. This is a direct result of the big lead Sony has on Microsoft. This strategy would help get more consumers to their ecosystem. The rule of the game is whomever has more consumers are better able to sell to more consumers. Unfortunately, this is going to be an epic fail because everything MS does fails miserably.

@allever: Actually if you have been paying attention to anything MS has been saying as a whole, its all been about providing services instead of products and allowing those services to work across all MS platforms. This started when the new CEO took over and was the main reason why Windows 10 was offered as a free update. It's also what they will be using to push their new line of phones now that the surface has finally taken off. Xbox could be crushing PS4 and they would still be doing the same thing. Xbox accounts for like 10% of their business so it has almost no say in what MS decides to do.

@Darknight765: Say what? If Xbox One was beating the PS4 in sales none of this would have transpired in the form it is now., bet your bottom that BC would have never appeared and think about it if it weren't for them in their undesirable position what would be the incentive to give that away? You people who know nothing of how business works are always full of this happy fun sunshine stuff, sorry but business is pretty dastardly and at times wholly unethical. They are in it to make money and everything is geared toward making that happen.

Obviously Microsoft is always concerned about the competition, but I sincerely doubt that their current moves with the XBOX ONE S or unified cross-platform gaming are in direct response to any particular thing Sony is doing. The things that Microsoft is doing now have probably been in the pipeline since the release of the XBOX ONE, before the PS4 established a huge sales lead over the XBOX ONE and before the announcement of the PS4 Neo.

@theKSMM: Some of your speculation may be true, but you can also be assured that there was a cost model behind all of it that was sure to require Xbox platform users to pay up even more and more to use their "services" on multiple devices. MS has been sacrificing revenue opps ever since the release of the Xbox One in an attempt to win back their userbase after their epic 2013 E3 debacle. Win 10 being free, their backwards compatibility push, any many other "features" they have introduced? You can be assured their goodwill wouldn't be near as widespread had they found themselves in the lead in the console space. Play Anywhere sounds fairly similar to Cross-Buy/Play features that Sony has been doing ever since PS4 introduction. While it may be slightly different, I've been playing my PS4 games using Remote Play and Cross-buy/play features for quite some time.

I think the concept is pretty cool and I can see the ecosystem they are trying to build. I honestly wonder about how many gamers would utilize the system.

For me, I think it would be a matter of how many non MS exclusives would go on the platform. I don't think MS has the most diverse of genres, and I would think that it would be a loss for 3rd party developers.

I think MS knows software and has the resources though so I'm interested to see where this goes.

I'm not fully buying that some of the tactic isn't in response to Sony having a very big lead. If Xbox one was selling better I don't think they would be being quite as generous as they are being. But Microsoft has completely different management to what it had in 2013, so I do believe their tactic has changed since Ballmer left.

Same thing as cross play between PlayStation devices. It's on PC, yes, but you still use the Microsoft ecosystem.
